  1. Here is some food for thought, for the first time in four years we dont have any movies that have
a billion dollars in their register by the end of may. 2013- im3. 2012- avengers, 2011- pirates of
Carribean, 2010- alice in wonderland. For summer in general there are only two films that have
    A shot.
    1. Transformers has a solid shot because of robots and this is only sure bet that it becomes
Only 300 million grosser of summer domestically.
    2. Guardians of galaxy- this is an extreme longshot, super longshot. But its marvel. Its original.
Its trailers were better then amz spmn 2 and xmen 5.

    • I’ve never really cared much about the box office. If a good movie takes in enough money to make a solid profit and still pay off it’s budget, I’m satisfied.

    • Transformers has a good chance, but there’s no way Guardians of the Galaxy crosses the billion mark! It will probably make around 350 millions.

    • Not in their wildest dreams Guardians of the Galaxy will make $1bn at the box office…

The way I see it the only 2014 movies that perhaps reach the $1bn mark are Transformers 4, Hobbit 3 and Hunger Games 3. None of them have been released yet, so the 2014 box office champion is still waiting to be unleashed.

Remember that it is not just May or the summer what counts. In 2013 Frozen ended up being above Iron Man III.

    • Hope the best for James Gunn and Co. in GoTG but there is no way in hell that film hits a billion. Like it’s not even worth imagining. If it can hit the 500 M mark, the film will be a MASSIVE success. Films that will most likely hit 1B:

      1. Transformers: I don’t see it hitting 1 bil, but I see it getting close.
      2. Mockingjay Part 1: Once again will get close but won’t. Will no doubt be highest grossing of franchise.
      3. The Hobbit: I find this to be the most likely. ‘Journey’ hit 1B, but ‘Desolation’ didn’t. I think ‘Five Armies’ will since it will most likely be the for sure ending to Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth films and probably some huge marketing promising gigantic action pieces.

The biggest success of this year I think will be X-Men: DOFP. Very happy for its BO success.

      • No copying ;)

    • Some people were predicting big things for How To Train Your Dragon 2 at the start of the season. I could see it, moreso than GotG.

    • Still stuck on box office numbers, I see.

  2. Welp, graduation ceremony was yesterday. Now I’m up in Detroit for 2 weeks!

Hopefully, this will give me time to work on a couple of novels: Time Runner, Bond, Ghostbusters, Sly Cooper, etc.

  3. To bad Edge of Tomorrow got 4th this weekend. I had a few trivial issues with it. But for a blockbuster action, comedy, pacing were spot on.

Although I should state my bias. I could watch Emily Blunt read the phone book.

    • I could watch emily blunt take a poop, and she would still be hot!

      • oops, meant to add, i loved the humor in this film. i wasn’t expecting any, and it really worked, with the whole cinema laughing out loud at the right moments (like when he gets run over by the truck lol!)

        • I don’t mean to sound rude or anything, but could you please keep comedy spoilers on the down low?

I don’t mind spoilers for anything else, but comedy works when the audience feels it for the first time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone tell me, “You’ll be rolling at this part!” And then not crack even a smirk

    • I still hope Emily Blunt lands the role of Ms Marvel in the MCU

      • Katee Sackhoff…

        • I could live with that, in fact I could be quite happy with that, but Emily Blunt still fits the bill more for me

        • Stop. She is not Ms. Marvel, and god willing, she never will be.

        • This was in response to Katee Sackoff for Ms. Marvel, BTW, not Emily Blunt, although I don’t believe Emily Blunt should be Ms. Marvel either.

Honestly, do you really think Marvel/Disney is going to hire a D-list star, whose biggest acting credits were Battlestar Galactica and the 3rd supporting role in ‘Riddick’? It’s not gonna happen. She doesn’t have the star power, nor the look to carry a Marvel film as the lead.

Think of the actors you have currently leading Marvel’s future. RDJ, Scarlett Johannson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Jackson, Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas…hell, toss in Clark Gregg, and Cobie Smulders…where would Katee Sackoff rank of this list?

          • I take it that’s a no from you to Katee Sackhoff then?…

And with the majority (not all) of your list I would argue that Marvel took them and made them bigger stars than they were so who’s to say they couldn’t do it with Sackhoff?

Anyway, each to their own opinion.

            • The only one you could make a case for Marvel making them bigger stars is Evans, Hemsworth, Clark Gregg and maybe Cobie Smulders. While RDJ did ‘revive’ his career following Iron Man, I beg to differ that his star was even falling at the time. He was highly successful beforehand, Iron Man just pushed him to a new plateau.

Really what I’m trying to say is, Marvel won’t be looking to ‘make a star’ with whomever is selected to play Carol Danvers. They’re looking for someone who is all ready easily recognizable and established as an actress. When you say “Katee Sackhoff” to a normal everyday moviegoer, they say ‘who?’ Marvel wants star power, especially for someone playing a character based on their namesake.

  4. Which movies are you more excited about for the rest of the year?

From my side Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Interstellar.

    • I have a feeling Dawn/Apes will be the knock out best blockbuster of the year.
I’m looking forward to Guardians and Sin City.

    • Gone Girl and Interstellar top my list because I love Fincher and Nolan but I’m also looking forward to…
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
      Guardians of the Galaxy
      The Hobbit 3
      22 Jump Street

      • Oops, I meant Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

  5. RIP: Rik Mayall

I grew up watching him in The Young Ones and Blackadder. A great British comic actor and what a shame he has passed away.

    • Really very sad news. Most Americans may know him from “Drop Dead Fred”, but in Britain he was a real icon. He often played unlikeable characters, but was apparently the kindest and most humble man you could have met.

      R.I.P Rik.

    • RIP.
He always cracked me up as Lord Flasheart.

    • I had the pleasure of meeting him 2 weeks ago. He has always been a hero of mine and was completely charming and hilarious. A huge loss.

  6. Just finished the 5th season of Doctor Who.

I must say, as much as I liked David Tennant, Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman (Catherine Tate just so so), Season 5 is my favorite so far. It was great! Matt Smith is fantastic as the doctor, Karen Gillan is by far the coolest companion (and breathtakingly gorgeous too) and the writing has also improved quite a bit, by sacrificing a bit of the goofiness in favor of better storytelling. The Van Gogh episode was crazy good and I love how the whole story arc of the season (the rips in time and space) was tied up neatly at the end, with a lot of time traveling fun in the final episode. Finally they really made use of the possibilities. I hope Season 6 can keep the high standard.

    • I completely agree with everything you said! Not only was Matt Smith a great doctor but the show got a lot better when Moffat became the showrunner! And yes, Amy is gorgeous and cool, but so is Clara!

    • Get ready to be disappointed with Season 6. The opening 2 episodes were good, but the rest is a let down.

      • Ah well, it was good as long as it lasted. Season 5 was so much better than the rest that it was almost like watching a different show.

    • @TheLostWinchester – I got hooked on Doctor Who around this time last year and throughout the year blew through all the episodes. When Matt Smith arrived, I really missed David Tennant, but quickly grew to like the new incarnation of the Doctor. Amy is my favorite companion followed closely by Clara and Rose.

I enjoyed season 6 with more Rory and Amy. I think this show is something amazing because one person could say Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper were the best Doctor/Companion combo and another could say David Tennant and Billie Piper OR Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman OR Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The combinations of these characters and their interactions are what make it so interesting…and time travel.

Take your viewing slow my friend, because when it ends…you’ll be waiting like everyone else for the new Doctor.

  7. So I was thinking of Emma Watson…

    Emma Watson for Mary Jane?

Emma Watson for any future Disney Live action princess (mostly Ariel or Rapunzel)

    Emma Watson for Ms. Marvel?

People say Katee Sackhoff, no, Emily Blunt, maybe.
I want to see Margot Robbie or Emily blunt helm Ms. Marvel…maybe Katee can be She Hulk? Idk she just looks so old from those Riddick photos and her physique isn’t feminine enough for Ms.Marvel.

    • Emma Watson would mesh better over at WB. Though I would love her as Jean Grey or Spider Woman in ASM3. I think Emily Blunt is the best choice for Ms Marvel, beautiful and tough. Margot Robbie looks too amazing for a Marvel film. She should have joined Star Wars.
Emma Watson as Janet Van Dyne but not opposite Paul Rudd, and Rachel Weisz as She-Hulk opposite Ruffalo.

    • Margot Robbie… hmmm ok, I’ll put her in my wish list with Emily Blunt

    • Olivia Wilde for Mary Jane Watson. Don’t say shes too old, either. Shes the same age as Andrew Garfield. She has the eyes, the figure, just throw a red wig on her and commence with jaws dropping.

  8. Someone feel like giving me a quick run down of Penny Dreadful? I really wanna get into it but I’ve missed the first few episodes. I love Eva Green so I need to start watching.

    • Eva Green is awesome in that show and you should indeed catch up with the first chapters.

The tittle of the show is actually quite cute to begin to. It relates to the horror stories in comic format that they would sell for a penny in Victorian times. They were call penny dreadful.

The show is very much that because it mixes classical horror themes (vampires, frankestein, etc) with Victorian pieces either real (Jack the ripper) or fictional (Dorian Grey).

The success of the show is in my opinion that regardless of the fantastic themes, the strong characters keep it together and there are also small close moments.

      • @nightcrawler
Thanks Kurt I’ll start watching it. Who do Green, Dalton and Hartnet play?

        • I dont know how much to tell you without getting into spoiler territory because they are all “mysterious”… I’ll keep it simple:

          - Dalton is playing a father looking for his lost daughter
          - Green is helping Dalton in his search and seems to be “special”
          - Hartnett is a gun for hire that also seems to hide something

  9. Good Morning all…..

    Happy Monday!!! :)

    A few quick things……

Edge of Tomorrow was ok, not great but ok. Kind of like Ground Hog Day meets Saving Private Ryan.

Emily Blunt was great and IMO, the best part of Edge of Tomorrow. She is going to be a real star.

How come nobody mentions or thinks of Viggo Mortensen for Dr. Strange? IMO, he’s a perfect fit.

Good to see Ant Man got its director. I think Reed will do find under Marvel’s guiding hand.

Saw Godzilla again….it just keeps getting better!!! The Atomic Breath alone is worth the ticket price. :)

I hope the rumors are true about WW costume reveal. It would be good to have something new besides rumors from BvS.

    • Viggo Mortensen was rumoured at the beginning of times and then denied. It is a shame that never came to fruition.

I wouldn’t be sad with any of the actors Screen Rant has recently talked about (both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy are great actors and I am sure they would bring something to the character), but I am gonna keep saying that I wish Mads Mikkelsen would land this role. His work in Hannibal has me totally convinced.

I could also go for Pedro Pascal after his portrayal of Prince Oberyn in Game of Thrones or Matthew McConaughey after his portrayal of Rust in True Detective.

Johnny Deep was always a fan favourite but he seems discarded. It could have been fan seeing him with RDJ in Avengers 3.

Anyway, now that they seem to have director, I hope they officially confirm the release date and the leading actor soon.

Phase 3 could be pretty cool with 3 new properties (Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, the Inhumans)

      • There’s no way Depp or Hardy are going to Marvel Studios.

        • I don’t think Depp is gonna do it but not because of Marvel Studios. He is actually the closer to Disney because of Pirates of the Caribbean.

      • Why doesnt marvel cast an asian man as doctor dtrange the way the original character was portrayed. I hate that the use asians and blacks in minor side roles when they have really good lead characters for them to play.

        • then you should absolutely be on board with Fox’s upcoming version of F4 with an african-american playing johnny storm. i know i am.
has anyone read any more news about this film?

    • C’mon Stark, Viggo wouldn’t set foot near Marvel Studios… Although he would undoubtedly be the perfect choice.
I’m saying Kit Harrington for Strange. He’s young enough to mesh well with the 3 Chris’ and ScarJo, and cheap enough for 3 movies.
I keep seeing Pedro Pascal, but I think he would make a good Kraven the Hunter for ASM3.

      • @ ScottySummerS

Why wouldn’t Viggo set foot near Marvel Studios? He’s a very good actor and Marvel Studios has always gotten top end talent for various roles. Ben Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins, Glenn Close among others. They all praise Marvel Studios and their time working with them. If I can’t have Viggo as Dr. Strange then I’ll take Cumberbatch, although I do like Nightcrawler’s suggestion of Pedro Pascal.

I don’t want Depp, especially after ‘Transedence’, although he already does work for Marvel Studios parent company Disney so he’s in the family. I’m not in favor of Tom Hardy getting the role, I just don’t see Dr. Strange when I look at him.

        • Ben Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins, Glenn Close,… Jeff Bridges, Tim Roth, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Douglas, Robert Reford,… etc, etc

        • @Stark and @nightcrawler
Wow when you list them like that, Marvel has had some amazing actors Jeff Bridges to Glenn Close…
I just think Viggo is a bit more independent now than to do a CBM. I’m still surprised he was in Hidalgo.
Not that I don’t want him for Strange. He would be the single best actor on the Avengers roster. Eastern Promises was an amazing film.
Off topic but, if Green Lantern is ever rebooted imagine Sharlto Copley for Sinestro.

          • Since we have talked about casting choices for Doctor Strange and Ms Marvel, how about we continue with Black Panther?

From DC, since they already have their Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg, how about Flash (I think we can all assume the one cast for TV is not going to jump to the big screen), Aquaman and Green Lantern?!? will they recast this one or are they keeping Ryan Reynolds around?

We have heard The Rock and Jason Momoa, not sure for what, but I would like to see Josh Holloway as Aquaman. I actually don’t understand why this guy has not been given more screen time after being a fan favourite in Lost…

            • @nightcrawler
I like Chadwick Boseman or Nate Parker for Black Panther.
Ezra Miller would play any character great. I could see him as Kyle Rayner. If Ben Foster was younger I think he could pull off a good Wally West, same with Emile Hirsch. Joel Kinnaman for Hal Jordan or Nova for Marvel.
Yea I was just thinking about Josh Holloway the other day. How nobody has put together a good series for him. He could have played Mud instead of Mconaughey.
But yea I like Sawyer for AquaMan, him or Charlie Hunham. I really want Terry O’Quinn to play a villain in something, and Matthew Fox as Red Skull in Cap 3.
If the Rock doesn’t play Black Adam it will be a missed opportunity imo.

              • And also, are we getting a new Joker already?

                • Hopefully not too soon!

        • All the people you listed took on small roles, and I don’t think they were meant to be long term investments unless they’re small roles. I remember reading somewhere that Dr. Strange is supposed to take over the mantle of Iron Man’s role in the MCU. Viggo is a bit too old to take on that mantle, and he’s not interested in large scale blockbuster type movies anymore from his recent comments on The Hobbit trilogy. They should probably look to the UK for top notch acting as most of them have theatre experience, and likely, they’d want to eclipse their career by going onto blockbuster type movies.

Not bashing or anything man, but I really doubt most A-listers would take on the burdens of franchise-type films. For example, I would love to see a Batman flick with Daniel Day Lewis as a tragic Victor Fries, but I know that’s probably never going to happen.

There’s also the whole “movie out of an actor’s range”, but opposite with MCU (in my personal opinion), the “actors out of the movie’s range”. What I mean is that most of the MCU movies don’t really lend themselves to being vehicles of drama and high level acting vehicles. Sure, there’s drama in MCU movies, but I’m talking about drama in the vein of Schindler’s List or something.

Seriously though, out of all the different comic book movie studios, Fox really won out with the talent in the X-Men franchise.

  10. (I tossed this in at the tail-end of the previous post. Want to give it one more shot while the thread is still fresh.)

Which directors would be ideal choices to tackle hypothetical DCCU solo films?

    Wonder Woman -
    Batman – (Affleck?)
    Green Lantern -
    Flash -

And what are the essential books/storylines pertaining to each (especially as they fit into what we know about the DCCU)? I’m very interested in Wonder Woman responses.

Add other solo characters if you’d like.

    • @david
James Cameron’s Sinestro Corp War and Blackest Night.
      Darren Arronofsky’s Wonder Woman.
David Fincher’s Batman:Battle for the Cowl.
      Michael Bay’s The Flash.

      • I dig ‘em.

Not sure about Michael Bay. Not because I outright dismiss him, but I don’t know if Flash is who I’d pair him with. Booster Gold? That’s the closest alternative I can think of.

  11. Anyone have a gif of Emily Blunt coming up from her pushup? Or a gif of her image on the moving bus? Must FIND!

  12. I actually really liked Edge of Tomorrow.

But I also liked Starship Troopers so I’m not sure my opinion has any weight.

No slow parts for me and I guess because it’s not a comic book movie, I had no preconceptions to color it.

Best movie I’ve seen this year… and yes, I did watch Cap2, XM:DOFP and TASM2 in the theaters.

And I was getting Matrix (and Transformers) flashbacks from those Mimics.

Hey, I saw EoT yesterday and thought it was a great film. I had a lot of fun (but I’m biased because I love stories that play with time). I thought they kept the timeloop elements fresh, and it never felt repetitive/boring to me. The explanation behind the timeloop was cool, and so were the aliens. (I liked where Cruise looked out over the water, and they were swimming toward the city.) I wish Bill Paxton’s part was bigger, but Emily Blunt was fantastic.

I haven’t seen ST yet. Is it similar?

      • @$2:

Starship Troopers is like a throwback military movie. Today it will seem even more aged but the premise is similar, humans against large swarming aliens and trying to figure out how to stop them because they are getting overrun.

        Just no time looping.

    • It’s my second favorite blockbuster of the year to date, behind only Days of Future Past.

    • Edge of Tomorrow is based on a manga called All You Need is Kill.

  13. bvs will make more than the avanger if it is good

    • Which Avengers? 1 or 2? :)

Let’s see where the bar is after 2015. Making prediction for 2016 is difficult now.

    • It’s Batman and Superman. That alone guarantees box office success, they’re two huge icons together for the first time on the big screen.

  14. Watching MetasTasis, the Spanish language Breaking Bad. It’s spot on!

  15. Was thinking about Ep VII this week, & realised that there will be 32 years between it and ROTJ. Is that a record for length of time between a movie and its sequel? Any ideas?

  16. Are we or are we not getting more Matrix movies? Has that rumour died?

I always wanted a spin off with the Merovingian…

    • The question is, do *you* know why you want a spin off? Oh, yes. It is true. A spin off, of course, would be fanstastic, but this is not a reason. This is not a “why”. It is not an end. And so to look for a spin off is to be looking for a means to do… what?

      • Make the Wachowski rich? hahaha

Merovingian – Ah-ha, here he is at last – Neo – the One himself, right? And the legendary Morpheus… And Trinity of course, si belle qu’elle me fait souffrir… (french for “so beautiful, that she makes me suffer”) I have heard so much, you honor me… Please, join us, this is my wife, Persephone… Something to eat? Drink? Hmm… (at that point he says something I have trouble understanding, I’ll try back later)
        Neo – No, thank you…

Merovingian – Yes, of course, who has time? Who has time? But then if we do not have a take time (?), how can we have a half time? (he starts smelling his wine) Château Haut-Brion 1959, magnificent wine, I love french wine, like I love the french language… I have sampled every language — french is my favorite — fantastic language, especially to curse with… Nom de dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperies de connards d’enculés de ta mère… You see, it’s like wiping your *** with silk, I love it!

Morpheus – You know why we are here.

Merovingian – Hmm… I am a trafficker of information, I know everything I can… The question is, do you know why you are here?

Morpheus – We are looking for the Keymaker.

Merovingian – Oh yes, it is true… The Keymaker, of course… But this is not a reason, this is not a why… The Keymaker himself’s very nature is means, it is not an end, and so, to look for him is to be looking for a means to… do… what?

Neo – You know the answer to that question.

Merovingian – But do you? You think you do but you do not… You are here because you were sent here, you were told to come here and you obeyed… Hahah, it is of course the way of all things… You see, there is only one constant, one universality’s the only real toss (?): causality. Action… Reaction. Cause… and effect.

Morpheus – Everything begins with choice.

Merovingian – No. Wrong. Choice is an illusion, created between those with power, and those without… Look there, at that woman… My god, just look at that… Effecting everyone around her, so obvious, so bourgeoise, so boring… But wait… Watch, you see, I have sent her a dessert, a very special dessert… I wrote it myself. It starts so simply, each line is a program creating a new effect, just like… poetry. First, a rush… Heat… Her heart flutters… You can see it, Neo, yes? She does not understand why, is it the wine? No. What is it then, what is the reason? And soon it does not matter, soon the why and the reason are gone, and all that matters is the feeling itself… THIS is the nature of the universe. We struggle against it, we fight to deny it, but this is of course pretends, it is a lie… Beneath our poised appearance, the truth is we are completely out of control. Causality. There is no escape from it, we are forever slaves to it. Our only hope, our only peace is to understand it, to understand why, WHY is what separates us from them, you from me… Why is (can’t understand a few words there), without it you are powerless… And this is how you come to me, without why, without power… And those are link in the chain… But fear not, since I have seen how good you are at following orders, I will tell you what to do next… Run back, and give the fortuneteller this message: her time is almost up. Now I have some business to do, I will say adieu and goodbye…

        Neo – This isn’t over.

Merovingian – Oh yes it is… The Keymaker is mine and I see no reason why I should give him up… No reason at all.

Persephone – Where are you going?

Merovingian – Please ma chérie, I’ve told you, we are all victims of causality… I drink too much wine, I must take a piss… Cause and effect. Au revoir.

  17. I hope someone can answer for me (maybe it was discussed in earlier posts or maybe not):

In the final scenes of Edge of Tomorrow when Tom Cruise is watching the news, Lara Pulver is present in the scene. There is no possible way she was used simply as an extra. Did she have scenes that cut from the final product? Cause her presence is almost distracting since she’s so damn beautiful and also famous lol. Anyone know anything about it?

  18. The Signal comes out this week, I just found out. I would have thought this would have better ads going. Last I heard about it was when they had their cryptic viral marketing. Lemme check tomatoes..

  19. so that wb tours was nothing
