First! I’m the First guy, look at me!!!!!

Gary says:

So, what does everybody think the surprise sleeper hit of the summer might be?
So far , everything has performed up to expectations.
I was just wondering if there might be a surprise coming up that no one is expecting to be a hit.

Daniel F says:

I would say the surprise failure was Terminator. I think most of us with few exceptions expected it to be a great movie that would perform well. I enjoyed it, and while Vic gave it a luke warm review he wasn’t completely negative. Though some members seem to bash it as if it were the worst movie of the year. Either way though like it hate it or some where in the middle it was not great at the box office.

I would say the surprise hit for me was Star Trek. I expected it to do well, but not to make how much it has. Trek tends to have a stigma attached to it, but it appears that maybe those times are moving toward the past. I do have a work friend who still refuses to see it because it’s star trek. He told me no self respecting black man will ever watch Star Trek. His words not mine. I make fun of him all the time because he tries to act like he’s a gangster gee thug and not at all nerdy, but he’s a huge gamer nerd and has Batman ring tones on his phone. I kid you not when he gets a text message his phone says “Why So Serious?”. I don’t see why he rejects the Trek so much and what’s up with the stigma, but that was my long rambely way of saying that Trek surprised me.

790 says:

Lol, Kofi. Damn it I wanna be first just once!!!

I think the biggest hit of the summer hands down will be, “Imagine That” the new Eddie Murphy film,,,

But seriously it will more than likely be Transformers 2. Then Avatar later in December.

Jimmy says:

I reckon, just because it’s a “surprise” (since nobody expected it to be going this strongly, I certainly didn’t!) Is Star Trek. I don’t know anything about G.I. Joe so I’ve got lots of comic reading to do, to catch up… As for future hit Avatar will probably end up disappointing people just because of the massive hype…

Here’s my question. Any truth to the rumour that there’ll be a Naked Gun: What 4? The Rhythm Of Evil?

INK says:

Going to see Terminator tomorrow night.

Kofi Outlaw says:

Surprise failure: I totally agree with the T4 verdict.

Surprise hit: The Hangover. Hands down. Nobody saw it coming and it is going to end up being both a commercial and cult comedy hit. It’s the 2009 “40-Year Old Virgin”. Funny too!

English Gavz says:

I’m desperate to see hangover, looks very good, it wasn’t scheduled to come to my part of England, but that’s changed now. Incidentaly Star Trek rocks.

SK-47 says:

I’m desperate to see something…have not seen any of these summer movies!
So guys, now that there are some out there, what should I see first? Star Trek, Hangover, Drag me To Hell, Up?
Seems like the reason to see Terminator was all shown in that new TV spot that Rob posted last week with Arnold.

The Voice of Reason says:

Suprise hit is surely the hangover.
That’s not the real kofi.
@Daniel f
Surprise failure is not terminator, it will be avatar. Believe me, I love his movies and I wlll be seeing probably more than once in the theatre but for the hype I don’t think it will match it.

The Voice of Reason says:

@sk-47
Definitely see star trek or terminator in the theatre. The others can wait for DVD.

piratedan says:

I am really surprised that this summer I must officially be an “old guy”. There’s nothing going on this summer outside of HP6 that I can give a ratatouie about. Maybe something else will get me excited but so far, I have a whole lotta of “eh” going on. Maybe I need to expand my horizons some more but at this point I am more excited about new episodes from Leverage and Eureka than I am about the upcoming films.

Hoonz says:

Id had to say that Terminator wasnt a complete failure… i just think it didnt live up to the hype. Im a lil worried as well with Avatar for that matter.

Id have to disagree with it being a “SUPRISE” for me… but the two best movies out right now are The Hangover and Star Trek. I guess Trek is a lil bit of a suprise cuz im from a younger generation that never got into it. but i am glad on how they brought it back with a new beginning for me, cuz i thoroughly enjoyed it!

Im looking forward to Transformers 2, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Where the Wild Things Are and Public Enemies. I have a really good feeling that they will all dominate!

GIJOE im a little worried about… not a huge Marlon Wayans fan, and the director is from the Mummy- series and Van Helsing, correct? and i wasnt too impressed with those.

Andy S says:

Was anyone else having a funky time posting last night? I would post something, it would disappear and when I would go to let Vic know, it would be back again! I also noticed at one time last night, an edit feature for the posts, but now it is gone. Playing with the site last night, Vic?

Charlie says:

Here is a new discussion item, so i was watching Revolutionary Road last night, and seeing Michael Shannon in it made me think that in the future he might make a good replacement Joker in the batman franchise, i think he could do a pretty good job of filling in for Heath, and bringing the same darkness to the role that he did.

so what do you think?

Evie says:

@Charlie: yeah, Shannon does look crazy enough lol.

If you have to pick ‘a’ movie to see if you haven’t seen any yet, it would be Star Trek. A close second is Up. (although I haven’t seen The Hangover yet).

@Andy

There was a flood of traffic due to the Whiplash post so I “locked” down the site so it wouldn’t crash.

John "Kahless" Taylor says:

I wouldn’t say T4 is the most disappointing, I would say Wolverine.

For me, Trek is the best film out so far. Up the best animated and The Hangover the best comedy. But we are only at June, so who knows.

cantizzle says:

my guess is G.I. Joe won’t be crackin into best. maybe closer to disappointing, and not because of Marlon Wayans

steven the git says:

John Woo’s new movie, Red Cliff, has caught my eye. Not sure when that comes out in the US, or if it has been already, but only now seeing ads for it in the UK.

Am interested in seeing Sherlock Holmes as still not sure what to make of it. My hopes have gone up after the trailer.

Daniel F says:

John “Kahless” Taylor

We are talking disappointing in box office not in quality. Wolverine is making just barely under what was expected of it for the most part it’s on par. Terminator is far bellow expectations. Now if we go with quality your right for sure.

I will say when all is said and done I think GI Joe will be the worst film of the summer even worse than Transformers.

790 says:

GI Joe does look horribly lame.

Daniel F says:

I rarely do this, but I agree with 790 lets all now hug our loved ones and wait for the apocalypse to end.

cantizzle says:

i don’t know i can say trek is a surprise with all the loyal followers and the special effects to draw in casual summer movie goers

Daniel F says:

Yea, but the problem is look at all the Treks of the past and see how well they did. This Trek was a surprise. May not of been a huge one we all expected it to do well, but it’s doing beyond what most people thought.

Hoonz says:

Terminator wasnt disappointing, im pretty sure it just didnt have the WOW factor that we all wanted, it didnt blow us away with a vast landscape of war going on or whatever we expected to see… it was just alright.

I def agree that Wolverine is by far the worst movie this summer. I couldnt have been more let down. There were sooo many mistakes in that film it was so hard to watch. Storyline spread themselves too thin, no blood on the decapitation at the end, never have i known wolverine’s claws to stop lasers, they dropped the ball on Gambit yet again… it was just a mess all over.
And yes i fear for GI Joe as well… and i grew up on GI JOE (just to give u an idea of my age) and im already going in with an open mind, but im prepared for the worst. Who knows it could be like the first Transformers with amazing effects and what-not, but have the lame story line, i can deal with that…

Mike Bay, tho, had better live up to his word on this next film. He might be one of the best action directors ive seen. I hope its good.

This Disctrict 9 movie… its getting more interesting the more i see it. But, im still leaning towards Transformers 2, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, and Public Enemies to dominate. As for a Surprise… who knows, GI Joe might do it… 9 might do it (the Tim Burton one)…

@John ‘Kahless’
Hangover is the best comedy. i couldnt agree more. i havent laughed that hard since… i dunno… Anchorman? It was awesome, i cant wait to go see it again.

Jago says:

Now i don’t know how people in here feel about dance movies but i like them… Not so much the story to tell you the truth but for the dancing and how they present it on film. I myself have had dance as a big background in my life… The point to all of this is i just heard of ” Step Up 3D”… And i think its going to be very cool.

Andy S says:

I’d sooner castrate myself with a rusty butter knife than ever sit through a dance movie. They’re that bad.

John "Kahless" Taylor says:

There are some dance movies I do like (the one with the girl who wanted to be a ballerina but then her mother died trying to get to her performance was pretty good) but most of them I think are pretty bad. Then there are some where the dancing of the movie is good but the rest is utter crap, like You Got Served. The first Step Up was OK, but the second was not good for me, and I’m not inclined to see this 3D one.

Phil G says:

Hangover just came out of nowhere for me. I still need to go see it.

So much for Will Ferrell. Will he ever come back from that disaster of a movie? :p
