As usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice.

Finally I’ve had a chance to comment on the Open Discussion thread after being busy for the past week. Now I know my comments are a little late but I have to say them anyways!
I rarely every argue with SR’s film review ratings. I understand that movies fall under different expectations, different genres, different goals, and different styles. But I have to say…I was shocked to see TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION get 3.5 stars. I’m not calling anyone out or saying they’re wrong. But man, I was flabbergasted. Even with Transformers extremely low quality expectations, this film was downright awful. It’s as if the film was self-aware of how terrible it was and just kept raising the bar as the film went along. Visuals were good. Some actions scenes were good, but completely repetitive. But the story: awful. Dialogue: awful. Pacing: god awful. Either Michael Bay really is the worst filmmaker of his generation or he purposely made AoE as a middle finger to the entire world.
Once again I’m not blasting Ben in any way and always love reading his reviews, but that review shocked me!
Gotta agree with you – one of the most disappointing movies from a guy who obviously doesn’t care about his fans. The thing that gets me about the SR guys is listening to the podcast. Ben, you give this one 3.5 stars, but if I had never read your review and had not heard how you scored it, I would have thought you hated the film. By the time you guys get through spoilers, it’s clear that you and Kofi are much closer to Rob than when the discussion started. Ben is certainly entitled to your opinion, but I agree with Rob and Big Fudge that AoE is pretty horrible.
I actually had the chance to finally get my butt into the theater to see this film, and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything more than the usual we’ve seen in the past movies. Here and there, the storyline will plant an Easter egg of sorts into the mythology of these sentient robots. But they intentionally leave it as vague as possible in order to carve out yet another billion dollar film 3-4yrs later.
The “seed” bomb was something new for me in the story arch of the transformers. Interesting how they changed what we thought we knew about earth’s history and the event that supposedly killed off the dinosaurs. lol
Before that, we were told Alien life landed on Mars back in the 1950-60s which spurred the space race. Yet all of these Easter eggs have taken us nowhere in general. It all boils down to the same Boom Boom Bang you’d expect from Michael Bay. No continuation into the mythology of these complex alien life forms at all, just the same ole crap. Perhaps the next installment will see more off world events and story arches.
Btw: the cheesy comedy acts were toned down by just a notch in this iteration….which is a good thing.
The Last Ship is pretty good so far….I dont think Michael Bay is the worst film maker he’s made alot of movies I’ve really enjoyed like The Island, Pain & Gain, The Rock, Bad Boys & Armageddon.
Turning out much better than “Last Resort”.
I hated Transformers 3 so I promised myself not to trip over the same stone again.
Your comment reaffirms my position. I am so not watching this movie…
Be your own man…dont let someone else dictate if you will see a movie or not. I enjoyed it for what it was: mindless fun entertainment and a quick way to blow 3 hours.
I am my own man, didn’t you read the part where I said “I promised myself”?
I planned not to watch this movie looong time ago.
And btw, nothing quick about it…
I read the part where you said to Big Fudge: “your comment reaffirms my own position”. Yet you havent seen the movie…ijs. no hate though.
Yes, it REaffirms my position, which means my position (i.e. not wanting to watch this movie) was PRE-existing to his comment.
And using your own words (“dont let someone else dictate if you will see a movie or not”), I am not gonna let you convince me to watch it
I recently watched The Leftovers for free on yahoo. I thought it was pretty good, but not good enough to warrant a subscription to HBO or whatever odd movie channel its going to be running on.
When are these TV execs going to realize my generation thinks that cable sucks and we refuse to pay extra for a single show on an otherwise mediocre movie channel that was hot in the 80s & early 90s. I personally dont even have cable anymore…(I have a netflix account & a digital antenna) and dont get me wrong I was born in the early 80s. I grew up with HBO and the old school cable box…but the internet changed everything, there’s no going back.
The Leftovers has a good premise and I’m sure the actors will do great. It was just a tad…boring I guess. I hate using that to describe shows but it kinda was. I like most HBO programming so I’m gonna stick with it for a bit.
Good morning all…
Happy 4th of July to everybody!! Have a great holiday and a great weekend!
Thanks, Stark! The same to you!
Happy Fourth of July, Scranters!
Happy 4th everyone here in the states.
I lucked out today. The weather is kind of crappy here in Ct. so instead of suffering through a picnic I didn’t feel like going to I’m being a slob while watching Tennis, The World Cup and a little bit of John Adams on HBO.
Thank you forefathers.
Got a chance too see Locke during the week, Tom Hardy is without a doubt one of the best actors ever what an amazing performance. Has anyone read Sandman Overture? curious to know if its worth checking out or not.
Saw a handful of Redbox movies this past week. Two of the worst movies like, ever made. Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit and Robocop. And I have to say Robocop was just the worst thing ever.
Lone Survivor was good. Very sad, and really good. 3 Days to Kill was kinda awesome, badass old men movies are dope. Can’t wait for 3 Days to Kill v Taken: Dawn of the Expendables.
Enemy with Ghyllenhal was dope. The director did an amazing job. Crazy ending.
Finally got around to binging Penny Dreadful. I know I’m a few weeks late but it’s dope. Eva Green is amazing of course and it’s cool to see Hartnet back.
Anybody watch Rectify?
“3 Days to Kill v Taken: Dawn of the Expendables” LOL
I told you so about Penny Dreadful
Haha yea you did. Thanks Kurt. It was hella dope, and super crazy. I can’t wait for season 2!
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was a complete bore.
Technically it was well made but the plot itself was an absolute dud. It honestly felt like a pilot for a new police procedural on CBS.
Nothing about it was “cinematic”.
Absolutely right. Like what was the story? I swear nothing happened. I’m just not a fan of Kenneth Branagh on any level. I felt bad for the actors.
Rectify goes a bit too slow, takes a bit too long to get to the meat of the story, tries too hard to have contemplative philosophy with the main guy, and seems to be setting up some relationship drama with the Bible chick; but I still like it. This as opposed to Banshee which is basically a graphic novel. I like the realism aspect of Rectify, but I’d rather binge watch it though.
Yeah, Jack Ryan was pretty bad, especially Keira Knightley. I also watched Sum of All Fears which was a better Jack Ryan film but still kind of bad. Hunt for Red October was and still is great though.
Anyone else want more Harry Potter spin off movies and or books? I sure as heck do. IF JKR writes them.
So I’m finally on the Game of Thrones bandwagon.
I tried to watch it last year but was utterly bored by the first and second episode. But as I mentioned before, my wife hears so much about it that she wanted to watch it so we’ve been watching it together (after the kids go to sleep).
It was a slow burn and there are still some episodes I fall asleep on (watching them after midnight might attribute to that) but overall I can understand the obsession. Just finished Season 3 (was very shocked by the Red Wedding… and since I avoid GoT discussion, I had not idea what was going to happen).
I just wish my HBO subscription included all season of GoT on my cable OnDemand… had to watch the first 3 seasons on my computer via HBOGO and an HDMI cable to our TV (such a pain to pause, rewind etc). But Season 4 is OnDemand and it’s easier to watch with a remote.
It took me a while before I joined the bandwagon on Game of Thrones also.
I first tried it when season one aired but couldn’t get into it. I gave it another shot just before season three started and it finally clicked and I blew through seasons one and two in about four days.
I’m glad I did it. Not because I wanted to be in on the hype I just think it’s a great story.
I’ve even gone back and have read the books that have been covered in the show (1-3). It’s been a great way to better understand the characters.
Now I have already bought books 4 and 5 so I can read them after the respective seasons have finished.
What’s everyone’s television top 10 or 5 theme songs? Could have words or just music playing. Mine would be …
1. “Go Go Power Rangers” from – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
2. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles intro” from – the 80′s animated series.
3. “Save Me” from – Smallville
4. “Revolution” from – Birds Of Prey
5. “Baywatch theme” from – Baywatch
6. “Batman:TAS” intro
7. “Justice League Unlimited” intro
8. “Beverly Hills 90210″ intro

19. “He-Man & MOTU theme”
20. “Ducktales theme”
21. “Chip N’ Dale Rescue Rangers theme”
22. “Tiny Toon Adventures” theme
23. “Captain Planet” theme
@WallyWest – The 80s and 90s had the best theme songs for cartoons, hands down. This stuff that gets played today is crap imo. Maybe I’m just old :-\ lol
@ Paul Young
I can agree. I downloaded number of television themes. I forgot to add Cheers to the list. I don’t consider myself old but know what I like. There’s still a few more themes I just thought up, but think I mentioned enough on here, lol. It wasn’t just toons in the 80′s & 90′s that had the best theme songs but also live action shows too imo.
Good topic starter sir
But if you add cheers you have to have Frazier on there and fresh prince of bel air (we one knows it by heart)
It just sounds cool but who really knows what he is saying expect for the scramble eggs part.
Thank you. I thought it was one I notice no-one touched on about. Lol, I couldn’t remember all of them. I just remembered shows on Nickleodeon, toons & live action shows both from that channel. I look at other’s list & ask myself how did i forget that show? lol. Too many old shows i liked to name them all on here.
Yea I was reading others lists too. But I agree the 80s & 90s be far had the best theme songs I’m not putting them in any order but some the were good that have not been mentioned:
Where in the world is Carmen San Diego
Seinfeld (that baseline alone is always so recognizable)
Saved by the bell
Oh! Oh! That made me so nostalgic that I’m YouTubing all of them. Nice one.
How about an article that specifically focuses on themes / intros of ANIMATED shows?
From the top of my head (in no specific order):
4. Swat Kats
5. Defenders of the Earth
6. Captain Planet
7. He-Man and She-Ra (?)
8. Scooby-Doo Where Are You
9. The Centurions (which WAS a Michael Bay movie)
10. GI Joe
12. Spider-Man 60s
13. Every other Spider-Man series
14. The Mask
15. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES!
17. Jonny QUest (the “original” Cartoon Network-hyped Ben 10)
19. Super Friends…
… okay I’m exhausted now. I’m going to Youtube. Nostalgia Fest!
Swat Kats is my jam!!
Oh oh oh….. Don’t forget Wild Kats!! A more awesome X-Men with probably the most awesome powers. Why don’t they do remakes of 90′s cartoons?
“Go Go Power Rangers” probably tops my list as well.
I also loved the themes for “Thundercats” and “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?”
Love these lists Wally.
1) Tank! Cowboy Bebop
2) The Real Folk Blues- Cowboy Bebop
3) Zankoku Na Tenshi -Evangelion
4) Woke Up this Morning- Sopranos
5) Hey Arnold!- Hey Arnold
6) Way Down in the Hole- The Wire
7) Xmen’s opening-
8) California- The OC
9) Love and Marriage- Married with Children
10) Little Boxes- Weeds
11) Just Communications- Gundam Wing
12) opening to Doug
13) Superhero- Entourage
14) Diver- Naruto Shippuden
15) Jack’s theme on Lost. Gets me every time I hear it.
1. “Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas” – Supernatural. While technically it’s not the theme song from the Opening Credits, it’s being used for the recap leading into the final episode of every season, making it the unofficial theme song of the show.
2. The theme from “Simon & Simon”.
3. “The Ballad of Serenity” from Firefly
4. The theme from “Battlestar Galactica” (Original Series)
5. The theme from “The Dukes of Hazzard”.
6. The theme from “The A-Team”. Good old Mike Post stuff!
7. The theme from “Magnum P.I.”. More Mike Post goodness.
8. The theme from “Airwolf”.
9. The theme from “Tales of the Gold Monkey”
10. The theme from “MacGyver”.
One that has not been mentioned yet and that I had a thing for was the opening tune of Remington Steele.
And I forgot te Misftis of Science Theme! I’d push out MacGyver for that!
Ten of my favorite intros/themes from the ’80s and ’90s (and some of the 70s?), from both animated and live-action shows, in no particular order (EXCEPT for the first one, which really IS my favorite):
Theme from “Greatest American Hero”
Theme from “Airwolf”
Theme from “Knight Rider”
Theme from “Tales from the Darkside”
Theme from “Animaniacs”/Theme from “Pinky & the Brain”
Theme from “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”
Theme from “Street Hawk”/Theme from “Automan”
