Dec 30, 2009 by

Vic Holtreman of Screen RantIt’s Wednesday again, time for our regularly scheduled open discussion post – the last one of 2009… been a hell of a year, hasn’t it?

As usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice. :)

  1. i have the final revised script for the finale of LOST!!!

  2. Yeah no one cares about Lost!

Sherlock Holmes, what an amazingly cool and fun movie, loved every second of it, nice to see something of that calibre on our screens.
I was right, way better than Avatar!

  3. Hey DrSam. Well I might get to see those this weekend. Maybe that will be something else we can agree on. ;)

  4. @the old man

I didnt hate Avatar as much as I thought I would, it was just a special effects movie like many others and I enjoyed it for the spectacle of having never really seen anything like it before.
Sherlock Holmes was just something else, one of my top five for this year easily. I have never been a Jude Law fan, but he was excellent in Holmes, but main credits go to RDJ (as always) and Mark Strong as Blackwood. He will really shoot to bigger things after this.

I think you will enjoy both, but Avatar exists on a lower level devoid of any real wit or charm, which Holmes has an abundance of.

  5. That’s good to know and thanks for the heads up. My sister thought this retelling of “Sherlock Holmes” would lack the very thing your saying it has. That makes me feel better about spending the money to see it. Now if the theater only sold Christmas Crackle I’d be all set…

  6. The only thing missing from Holmes was the line ” Elementary My Dear Watson”.

    Enjoy it.

  7. Two points.

I thought it was nice that there wasnt a single swear word in Sherlock Holmes, makes a refeshing change! Not that swearing in movies bothers me, it was just very noticeable.

And has anyone heard about SGU? Highest ratings for anything Stargate related since 2005! So it is a success then! Good, cos I like it.

  8. How do they still not have someone cast as Captain America if the filming is set to start in June? IT’S THAT A LITTLE OUT OF ORDER?!?!?!?!?

Although they don’t have anyone cast for anyparts amirite? But they have the director and the writers. lol

  9. @Taylor,

    Would love to see it.

    @DRS,
Dude you just spoiled that for me… :( ;)

    @SR,
YES AVATAR (THE REAL AVATAR) UPDATE!

  10. Enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, but cripes guys, it’s just a detective story.

  11. @ piratedan

it was more than “just a detective story”, it was a fantastically well put together and acted, period, action, comedy, detective story, which was borderline faultless.

  12. I also liked that there was no lanuage which kept in tune with the original work and with the times. I hate when period pieces add swearing that is inaccurate for the time. Holmes is classic and I really enjoyed this interpretation. BTW In all the complete works of ACD Holmes never once says elementary my dear watson, so I was kinda relieaved that they managed to not say that. Amazing movie, great everything, prob my favorite film of the year.

  13. @piratedan – just warning you that some of us are crazy and saying holmes is just another d story is like telling a trek fan that star trek is just another sci-fi movie.

  14. @Sam

I never realised he never said that, I havent read every story though.

  15. Sam B,,,
Everyone knows that cuss words wernt invented til around 1922. :-)

  16. ty Sam, that was my point entirely… just like saying Avatar is just a sci-fi adventure flick that is lacking any real wit and charm.

I liked both movies, I don’t see a need to run down one at the expense of the other. Both serve as capable escapist movie entertainment, isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about?

  17. I’ll just say SH is just another Guy Ritchie movie. There, take that! lol.

  18. My next-door neighbor took her kids to see Sherlock Holmes yesterday (they had to stand in line for close to an hour), and she was pleasantly surprised that the film was free of swear words. One of the things which bothers her is how often swearing is used in movies, and how it doesn’t add much to the story itself.

She also fell in love with RDJ, and she wants to see all of his previous movies.

  19. Ok I have to admit that I’m a huge Guy Rich fan… BTW noticed that RocknRolla was 2nd most downloaded movie of last year and no one saw it at the movies and no one bought it… Just wanted to put a plug in for it since I thought it was great and originally there was going to be a sequal so I want it to get more demand or more dollars. Killer cast, good acting, cool plot – very fun movie!

  20. @Sam

no arguement, I have all of his stuff, from LS&TSB, Snatch and RockNRolla in my DVD collection. I like Guy’s stuff and it was a good movie. Maybe I took more exception to DrSam’s comments than your own, and to perhaps step back and understand that everyone has an opinion and mine has just as much value as any other on the thread (unless you’re 790, and then he’ll just run rings around you logically, so to speak).

  21. Happy 2010 everyone!

  22. is scarlett johansson a whore or what? and a no-talent one, at that!

  23. What?

  24. Avatar was dope! Haven’t seen SH yet, gonna wait till the rush dies down a little bit. I’m still a little spectical on it though cause in the books SH was tall and skinny and a boxer, RDJ isn’t the first two. But should still be entertaining none the less for the non purist. As far as cuss words being invented in 1922. The first documented “f-bomb” was in 1475 in a latin/english poem called “flen flyys”. Shakespear also used lots of profanity in his work, but by todays standards they’re almost comical like “zounds”. Enough about that, let’s hope 2010 brings us some original work instead of making comic book movies and remakes (with the exception of the Coen Bros doing True grit, that just sounds sick!!!).

  25. @realist…you are one class act.

I’ve stated on the other Holmes threads that I liked the movie, but I just thought I would add it here to this discussion that I really enjoyed the movie. I’m going to agree with DrSamBeckett (twice in one year! LOL) and say it was a nearly perfect movie. Adler becoming the typical damsel in distress at the end was kind of a let down, but nothing to really diminish my enjoyment of the movie. The movie was fun to watch and I am looking forward to both RDJ and Jude Law reprising their roles in the sequel!

  26. Has anyone heard anything on when Season 4 of Eureka is supposed to air? My guess is probably going to be late spring early summer, but I sure wish it would be earlier. I love that show!

  27. Hey ScreenRanters! Everyone have a happy New Year! Let’s hope 2010 gives us some great movies. See you around! And a very special New Year to the ScreenRant crew who makes this film site the best out there!

  28. @Iron Knight

Hey, thanks, man. Same to you and all of you regular “Screen Ranters!”

    Vic

  29. This is probably real random, but… I just watched Rush Hour 3 on Blu-ray (I have seen it before however) and I was wondering… Are there any plans for a Rush Hour 4? I would love for them to continue these movies. The Rush Hour series is always good. All 3 movies are extremely entertaining and Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan go great together, plus they both need work. Chris Tucker? All he does is Rush Hour. Jackie Chan? His new movie The Spy Next Door will most likely bomb at the box office and we’ll possibly take away some of his credibility. They seem to have fun with the Rush Hour films, so why not make one (or two) more? I’d go see them. Anyway, has anyone heard anything official about a 4th installment in the Rush Hour series?
