screen-rant-vic-christmasIt’s Wednesday again, time for our regularly scheduled open discussion post.

As usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice. :)

And hey, a very Merry Christmas to you and your families from our family here at Screen Rant!

  1. Merry Christmas everyone!!
hope you all have a good one

So is everyone as excited as I am for the Xmas Day Doctor Who episode??!?!?!?!?!?!?

    :D

  2. Vic, I cant wait to see Sherlock, But right now the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel is beating Both Avatar and Sherlock in online ticket sales and Alvin 2 beat Avatar at the box office today.

  3. @Gary

Yeah, I saw that. Audiences are HUNGRY for movies they can bring the little ones to, let me tell ya.

    Vic

  4. That’ll be crazy if something as stupid as Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 beats out Sherlock Holmes and Avatar…

I think that will make it official just how stupid the average movie-goer really is…

  5. Actually it shows kids\teenagers lead the way in almost everything the adults pay for!
Uh oh…. I see a 3rd Twilight movie on the horizon and it is going to ‘Eclipse’ everything else.

BTW I am worried Sherlock is going to be more about style than substance; the trailer isn’t helping!

  6. Merry Christmas to all The Ranters!! (Sorry don’t say that pansy ass Happy Holidays crap)

Stephen Lang just called out Chuck Lidell. “Time to go to school bit%h!”

I love Avatar Stephen Lang. He could choke out Arnold’s flabby litle wrinkled neck in about 3 seconds!!

    Avatar Stephen Lang for Senate!!!

  7. @Ken J

It’s not stupid. There are TONS of parents out there looking for movies they can take their under-10 kids to without worrying about inappropriate content.

Not all parents are idiots that bring little kids to R-rated or “hard” PG-13 movies.

    Vic

  8. Merry Christmas to all the Screen Rant writers and regulars – hope you all have a good one.

  9. It’s being reported that Alvin & the CHipmunks made 18.3 million on Wed. and Avatar made 16.4 million…Rupert Murdoch must be smiling..

  10. @Ken J…

Vic and Gary are absolutely right — children and teenagers are the prime motivators behind most of the decisions parents make when it comes to spending money, and that’s why the first Alvin and the Chipmunks movie made a healthy profit, and the sequel will also do quite well as parents look for films which they won’t be ashamed or embarrassed to take their children to see.

The more mature audience will be split among the newer releases, including the wide releases of Up In The Air, Nine, Crazy Heart and A Single Man (all of them have gotten positive reviews so far) as well as Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.

The only fly in the ointment is — once again — the weather on Christmas weekend. The Northeast U.S. blizzard prevented Avatar from reaching the $100 mil mark during it’s opening weekend, and with winter storms predicted to hit the Central U.S. over the Christmas weekend, it’ll be interesting to see how well all the new releases fare.

  11. Merry Christmas to everyone. I can’t wait to see Sherlock Holmes.

  12. If you guys didn’t catch it, my review of Sherlock Holmes is up.

    Vic

  13. Uh… if Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie, does Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang count as a Christmas movie, too?

I watched the KKBB DVD this afternoon, and it’s one of my favorite Christmas movies, along with Scrooged, Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story and The Santa Clause.

  14. @stephie
Of course it is… I would add that one aswell to mine. Btw is that an avatar from IMVU ?

I would also add gremlins… It still makes me laugh hard.

  15. Shamose, I’m looking forward to the last 3 Doc Who eps!!! I heard that “Waters of Mars” was real good,,,

  16. Merry Holiday everybody!

  17. Merry Christmas to all my fellow movie-holics. :-D

    Vic

  18. @Vic and Stephie

I’m perfectly fine with kids being brought to kid-friendly movies, but I thought Alvin and the Chipmunks was supposed to be pretty dumb even for a kids movie? I didn’t really read the reviews, but I thought the first one got some pretty bad ones?? I’m sure neither of you saw me saying UP was stupid… So obviously I’m not simply making fun of it for being child friendly…

  19. Merry Christmas everybody !

  20. Merry Christmas everybody !

  21. Merry Christmas to everyone at Screen Rant! Let’s hope for a good year of movies in 2010! From the news that I’ve seen here on the site… Looks like we’re in for a treat!!

  22. @Jago…

My avatar is from Yahoo. I attempted to sign up for IMVU, but the site kept crashing on me.

And I almost forgot about Gremlins. That’s another one of my favorite Christmas movies. It never fails to make me laugh.

  23. Why do–and how can–weekend movie stats be reported instantly. In fact, on Saturday evening. I understand when it is a “landslide” it’s easy to call early on. But I’ve seen Drudge and you go back & forth about Avatar vs. Sherlock Holmes, and as I write it’s just after 12 noon on the west coast–a whole afternoon and evening to go.

My guess is, more time for word of mouth that SH is a loser will send some people to Avatar. And, does the extra 30 minutes of Avatar decrease its ticket sales capability?

  24. Um, SH isn’t a “loser”, it was a great, fun film. And I assume that as far as box office projections, they have it down to a pretty good formula – I have seen them tweak it one way or another on Monday/Tuesday in the past.

Longer running time – I don’t think that’s as much of an issue any more, they just open it on more screens.

    Vic

  25. After talking to some of my younger nieces and nephews this Christmas, WOW! I’m sure glad I’m not a kid in school these days.

Twilight has reached cult status with young girls 2nd to middle school grades. And Guitar Hero is all the rage with boys, closing in tight, “Dj Hero”.
I can see how kids get into smoking and drugs. If I was surrounded by Guitar Hero freaks and Twilight zombies I would surly turn to drugs,,, 8-O
