Open Discussion – Apr 16, 2008
Apr 16, 2008 by Vic Holtreman
Another week, another open forum. Discuss what’s on your mind in TV or movies on topics that we may not have covered this week, but are near and dear to your big-screen-addicted hearts.
BTW, I am always open to suggestions on what to add to the site to make it a better place for you to hang out and find what you’re looking for. I’m getting ready to do a bit of a re-vamp so if there’s anything you’d like to see here, speak up!
Around the web:

Since you are doing some revamp I will let you know you have some funky alignment issues with Firefox and linux i686. Mainly with form fields, search box, comments, ect. I can send you a screenshot if you liek.
Thanks. The initial stage will most likely not be very obvious, as I’ll be switching to a new CMS (Content Management System). I’ll probably try to add a few features at the same time but the site look will most likely not change much.
After that’s settled down I’ll look at changing the look of the site a bit. Cross-broswer compatibility is a MOTHER, and if I can get it looking good in a couple of versions of IE and FF running on XP, I’m usually pretty darned happy.
Vic
Completely understand, I have been in web developement for the past 4 years ( paying for college).
Which cms are you switching to? Personally I recommend wordpress, it is very versatile, and very user friendly.
It is normally fairly simple to convert the DB also.
Lol, now I see. Movable type, boy am I blind.
Actually I think a friend of mine is going to let me use his custom built CMS. I want something super-flexible and without a lot of stuff I don’t need. If not that I was looking at WP and Drupal as well.
Vic
They are both excellent. Drupal is a bit harder to get the hang of, but with the new wordpress upgrade many things arent very friendly with it.
But a custom cms is always the best.
I always get excited changing code around. Hell, the most exciting thing I have done in a while is transfered all of my sites to a fancy new dedicated server.
Well heck, I didn’t think this would go in this direction… somebody jump in with movie talk! lol
I’ve always run on a ded server and recently switched hosting companies from the awful hostnine.com to the most excellent nexcess.net.
Vic
I am with managemybox, I have used them before and been pleased.
But anyways back to film.
Are you ready for the summer run to start? It has been so boring these past few weeks.
This new what-you-call-it at the top of the page just doesn’t do it for me. Either use high resolution pictures for your posts or make it smaller or something, but the pics are all pix elated and u can’t tell what they are. Sorry, but it bothers me alot.
Hey Surma, thanks for the feedback. Can you tell me what resolution you’re running on your desktop?
Thanks,
Vic
BTW, does anyone else NOT like that feature on the home page? I thought it was really cool and would highlight featured stories nicely.
Vic
I really like it. I have seen several sites using a similar feature. I have even considered using it myself. It gives the site more of a website feel, and less of a blog look.
Not sure what the thing at the top is, but I have no problems on here. All looks really good.
Oh, I know what can bring up. I just heard that there’s going to be a remake of the Orphanage. Is that the quickest remake ever or has something else leapt in even faster?
I don’t mind it.
1280 by 1024, I like the whole idea and its not bad right now with the stories it shows, its just that every now and then there is a pic that just doesn’t work right like the nielson pic a while ago. Like I just checked it and most every pic works fine at the moment.
Oh and BTW I forgot to thank 790 for the Trekkie stuff the other day. I’m sure hes around here somewhere I’m surprised he hasn’t gone crazy all over the “forum” here already.
Ah, ok. Thanks so much for the feedback, Surma. It is VERY helpful. I know exactly what you mean with that particular image. This is a new feature and I’m still working out the bugs. I do a little testing offline but I usually end up using you guys as guinea pigs.
Ali, you don’t mind it? You’re supposed to think it’s AWESOME.
Vic
Oh yeah.. a remake of a movie that just came out what, four months ago? What the heck is that all about?
Vic
Thanks Surma and KEL!!!
I had a lot of fun at the convention. And I’m glad everyone liked the post!!!!!
Anyone excited about Cloverfield on dvd next week???!!!
OMG I just remembered did anyone see that trailer for the Day of the Dead/Cloverfield rip off called Quarantine I think. Could be good, but its still like the biggest rip off of all time.
I don’t know if “Quarantine” will be any good, but I do know it’s remake of a very recent Spanish horror movie called “[Rec]” which I haven’t seen but have heard is outstanding.
Vic
Wow, mention one remake of a spanish horror and up pops another! That was fast as well.
I don’t think I’ve seen any Hollywood remakes of european movies surpass the originals. The worst one has to be the Vanishing. Best bit of the original was the ending, and what happens, they change it! Same damn director too.
Boy your right about the Vanishing.
That changed ending defeated the entire point of the original.
I know! I was up late one night as a teenager and watched the Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with Sutherland in. That had a freaky ending, so I stayed up watching tv and ended up seeing the Vanishing. Yikes! What an ending?! No idea how I spelt after that one.
Then, some time later I see the remake and what a weak attempt it was. Oh, and let’s not forget the lame, ‘no thanks’ to coffee joke at the end.
Ha, just realised something. The Invasion movie I watched had Donald Sutherland in, and the remake of the Vanishing had Kiefer in. Also had Sandra Bullock, barely, before she vanished.
Oops, obviously I meant slept, not spelt!
Oh I knew what you meant steven.
That was one of the most disturbing endings since Taxi Driver.
Ok, if you love making fun of movies go see the recent remake Prom Night. I went to see it for that sole purpose and had the best movie experience since Cloverfield.
Lol Surma was it that bad?
Friend of mine worked on that film and I asked her if its any good. She said. “No”.
Like you know when a slasher is so bad you root for the killer. Well its past that point you want even the slasher to die cuz hes so dumb. It has every cliche in the book, and it never shows the stab wounds just tiny blood splotches and no holes in the shirt. There are also tons of extremely not intended to be hilarious (but are) parts because the mood is all wrong.
