Schneider was one of the best parts of One Day At a Time, which was based on the original '70s and '80s Norman Lear sitcom. The wealthy, lonely young landlord of the building, he was also Penelope's best friend. And while there was a lot to love about the character, there was a lot to feel sad about as well. He didn't have the best life, despite his obscene wealth. He didn't have many friends and had a fractured relationship with his father.

Sure, he was most often seen with a smile on his face. But there are still some things that were pretty sad about Schneider.

Inability To Find Love

Until he found Avery, Schneider was never really able to commit and didn't seem interested in finding true love. He seemed more like a womanizer who went from woman to woman with no desire to settle down.

Maybe he was just looking in the wrong places or didn't have enough confidence or belief that he deserved someone good. So, while his relationship status was pretty sad for most of the series, once he met his match with Avery, it was well worth the wait.

His Loneliness

Schneider latched on to the Alvarez family in part because he loved the closeness they shared and wished he grew up with a family like that. But also because he was just inherently lonely. He sat in his fancy apartment doing mundane things most of the time.

He didn't go out much, didn't seem to have many friends, and really had nothing better to do a lot of the time, nor anyone else to talk to. It's sad, especially for someone like him who truly valued loyalty and family.

Issues With His Father

In the episode where Schneider's father shows up, it's clear how bad their relationship is and how terrible a person his father is. His father seemed to have given Schneider control of the building so he would have something to do and stay out of his way.

He constantly berated his son and even gifted him with alcohol despite knowing that he was an addict – his dad was the one, after all, who had to pay for his rehab. It's sad that Schneider had to grow up with a father who didn't care much about him and always put him down.

More Money Than He Knows What To Do With

As the saying goes, money can't buy happiness. And it is totally true with Schneider, who has more money than he knows what to do with, yet nothing really makes him happy.

Any time his apartment was seen on the series, it's clear he filled it with lots of expensive things in hopes of filling a void in his life. It's not only sad that Schneider had so much money and nothing to spend it on but also that there are families like the Alvarezs who barely have enough to make ends meet.

Frivolous Purchases

Schneider and Avery - One Day At A Time

As noted, Schneider's apartment is filled with ridiculous items, from items he purchased or made in honor of the Alvarez family to expensive paintings and sculptures. He spends on anything and everything because he has nothing else to spend it on.

Schneider wastes a lot of money on meaningless material things in hopes that they will bring him joy, but they clearly don't.

His Dependence On The Alvarez Family

Schneider depends a lot on the Alvarez family. He goes to them for advice or help, or just someone to talk to when he has no one else. He depends so much on them that sometimes, it gets to the point of being invasive.

He shows up at their apartment unannounced, inserts himself into family discussions, and sometimes buts in when he isn't welcome. It's sweet but also sad at the same time.

He Doesn't Have Any Friends

One Day At A Time cast at Elena's Quince hugging

Schneider never really talks about other friends beyond the Alvarez's. He is so lonely that he even becomes friends with Dr. Berkowitz. The awkward doctor is much older than Schneider, and he's also strangely sort of like an older version of him. When Penelope starts seriously dating Max, Schneider also latches on to him in hopes of finding a new friend there as well.

At his age and with his wealth, it's possible that Schneider doesn't have a lot of friends by choice, simply because he doesn't want to end up hanging around people who use him for his money. Either way, it's sad that he doesn't have many close bonds outside of the Alvarez family.

Nothing To Do All Day

Even though Schneider supposedly runs the apartment building on his own, he is seemingly never really doing much of anything. He does, from time to time, have to go fix things in peoples' apartments, which he hires Elena to help him with (since he doesn't really know how to fix most of the issues himself.) And he mentioned before doing outreach work with kids at the rec center.

One would think that running an entire building and managing all of the tenants would be a tough and consuming job. But Schneider sadly seems to still have a lot of time to fill in his days.

His Struggle With Addiction

At the center of one episode was Schneider's relapse into drinking, which turned pretty ugly when he encountered young Alex in the laundry room of the apartment building. Drunk and depressed, he screamed at the teenage boy, frightening him and likely bringing back memories of Alex's own alcoholic father.

Schneider has a sponsor and goes to meetings. And, for the most part, he seems to have his addiction in check. Nonetheless, the fact that he has to struggle with it at all is sad.

Feeling Like He Doesn't Fit In

Schneider always felt like he didn't fit in. He was never able to live up to his father's standards and fit in with the wealthy crowd. But he clearly couldn't really relate to the hardships of people like the Alvarez family either, despite how hard he tried.

He comes across as confident and self-assured, but it's sad that Schneider could never really find a group of people with whom he truly fit, or at least that he could totally relate to. He finally found that in Avery, who was not only as oddball as him but was also secretly wealthy and truly loved him for him. And also arguably in Penelope (played by Justina Machado, who recently competed on Dancing With the Stars), who dealt with similar demons because of her PTSD.
