For those of you who like to gnaw on a good mystery, consider the following: season 2 of Once Upon A Time opened with a man receiving a postcard from Storybrooke with a single word written on it: “Broken.” In the latest promotional pictures from ABC, that same man – played by Michael Raymond-James – is featured heavily, and it appears he knows Emma (Jennifer Morrison) quite well. His character’s identity has been kept in strictest confidence up until now, so the obvious question is whether or not he is Henry’s father.
The evidence certainly seems to be in his favor. The episode in which Raymond-James next appears is “Tallahassee,” slated to air November 4th and was written by Christine Boylan and Consulting Producer Jane Espenson. From the official description released by ABC, it’s also a flashback episode; though not into the Enchanted Forest. This is the episode where the audience will finally get a glimpse into Emma’s past. Last year we learned that Tallahassee is one of the places where she spent the most time, so it would seem logical that she could’ve met Henry’s baby-daddy during that time.
If nothing else, it does appear the two have worked together in the past. As acquaintances? Friends? Perhaps Raymond-James is the fellow thief ABC claims, “wants to make an honest woman out of her.” Another promo shot shows Emma being handcuffed by a police officer, hinting that this might be where Emma is carted off to jail – the jail where Henry was born, perhaps? If it turns out that the Raymond-James’ character is Henry’s dad, a whole new line of questioning will be opened up: Is he from the Enchanted Forest? And if so, who was he in his former life? Was Emma the one who sent him the postcard or did that come from a more nefarious source?
Of course Raymond-James’ identity could be someone else entirely, as Storybrooke has one other mystery character: Baelfire, son of Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle). We know that Baelfire ran away to “a land without magic” before Regina (Lana Parrilla) cast the curse on the Enchanted Forest. Rumple meant to find him once they arrived in Storybrooke, but has thus far been unable to. Stopped first by the curse that physically harmed the inhabitants who strayed beyond the town line, and now by the curse that brings amnesia, Rumple has been thwarted at every turn.
Unfortunately, Espenson and her fellow Lost alum have made speculation nearly pointless, as the only thing that she and the Once Upon A Time writers can be counted on to deliver is the unpredictable. The good news is that viewers will get a peek into Emma’s past and perhaps Raymond-James’ character will be given a name; if not in the Enchanted Forest than at least on Earth. Even better, they will get a rare view of Emma in her pre-leather phase and if nothing else perhaps it will be revealed how her wardrobe evolved into its current, unvarying state.
The one thing a flashback episode does mean is that there is the potential for four distinct timelines during the episode exists. Emma’s story will explore her past on Earth as well as her present struggle in the Enchanted Forest. Her aim is to return to Storybrooke in the present and viewers could also be shown any number of scenes from the Enchanted Forest’s past. Get the Excedrin ready!
Once Upon A Time‘s “Tallahassee” episode will air on ABC on Sunday November 4th @ 8/7C.
