ABC’s fairytale project Once Upon A Time has found its leading lady in Jennifer Morrison, a former lead on House and recently on How I Met Your Mother. The pilot takes place in Storybrook [sic], Maine, where fairy tales like Snow White may or may not be real.
Morrison is best know for her six seasons as Doctor House’s colleague Dr. Allison Cameron. The character was written off the show in 2009. Since then she’s been a regular on How I Met Your Mother as Ted’s latest doomed love interest, Zoey, and also played Kirk’s mother in the 2009 Star Trek reboot. Her character on Once Upon A Time is the fish-out-of-water drawn into Storybrook’s magical drama.
Believe it or not, Once Upon A Time has a star-studded pedigree: it’s being written by Lost veterans Edward Kitsis and Adam Horrowitz. (They also wrote Tron: Legacy, so take it with a grain of salt.) It would be easy to dismiss this pilot as another project created in Twilight‘s image, like Beastly, Red Riding Hood and Snow White and the Hunstman – but don’t give up on it just yet. Given its less fantastical hook, Once Upon A Time seems to be more of a deconstruction of Grimm-style fairy tales than anything else.
For example, Ginnifer Goodwin of Big Love and Walk The Line will play Sister Mary Margaret, AKA Snow White. Lana Parrilla comes to Storybrook from Swingtown as the Evil Queen, though her down-to-earth alter ego has not been revealed yet.
There seems to be a big push for classic literature and fairy tales told with a new twist. In addition to the aforementioned Twilight wannabes, there’s Syfy’s Tin Man and Red the Werewolf Hunter, the upcoming Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (yes, another Snow White movie). Once Upon A Time could be welcome respite from the bevvy of overt adaptations at the theater. There’s also Ronald D. Moore’s 17th Precinct, a standard police procedural set in the magical town of Excelsior.
Once Upon A Time is in the pilot stage at the moment. Expect a season order – or not – sometime this summer.
