‘Once Upon A Time’ Season 2 Adds Captain Hook, Lancelot, Mulan & More

If you’re not yet hooked on ABC’s triumphant storybook drama Once Upon a Time, you might be now, as the hit action/adventure is overloading its second season with more familiar fantasy faces. Premiering with over 13 million viewers, Once Upon a Time was ABC’s largest debut in five years and the show looks to continue its success with new storylines and characters, including Captain Hook and Sleeping beauty.

Making his enigmatic entrance in the fourth episode of the upcoming season, Hook is described to be a never-back-down pirate that will not stop until his enemies are defeated. Captain Hook hides his malicious intent behind his dashing good looks, classy debonair demeanor and beguiling well-mannered nature. Irish actor Colin O’Donoghue (The Rite) has been cast as Hook, which is set to be a recurring role.

Joining O’Donoghue this season is former True Blood star Michael Raymond-James, who is fixed to play a “mysterious new character” – which is all ABC is giving us for now. Although we are still left in the dark on even the name of Raymond-James’ new character, it hasn’t stopped many from speculating it might be Baelfire, Rumpelstiltskin’s long-lost son who was sucked into a portal from the fairytale world to, presumably, our reality.

Whether or not Raymond-James will be playing Baelfire’s Storybrooke counterpart remains to be seen, but he’s not the first True Blood alum to work his magic on Once Upon a Time – last year Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam on True Blood) closed the first season as the maliciously magnificent Maleficent, whose evil actions will cause many repercussions throughout this season.

Feeling the burn from Maleficent dragon breath this season are newcomers Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) and her heroic Prince Phillip, played by Irish actress Sarah Bolger (Game of Thrones) and Pretty Little Liars star Julian Morris, respectively. Sleeping Beauty is tagged as someone who “could be mistaken for a spoiled rich girl“. Not much is known about her character beyond that – but her handsome Prince Phillip is described as a man who “has been on many long, hard journeys, and is a warrior from a kingdom that is no longer as well off as it once was.”

Sinqua Walls – who currently appears as new werewolf Boyd on Teen Wolf season 2 – will guest-star as the legendary Sir Lancelot. After being banished from the Round Table, Lancelot becomes a sword for hire who is only made more dangerous by the fact he has nothing to lose. Another fabled warrior to appear this season is Mulan, brought to life by Jamie Chung (The Hangover 2). Mulan, who will recur throughout this season, is described as having a “spirituality that enhances her tactical and strategic abilities.”

Branching out a bit more this season, Once Upon a Time will also be adding yet-to-be-cast fairytale characters Aladdin, Jafar, Ariel and Jack. No word yet on how these characters will be portrayed on the small screen, but Jack is expected to be all the Jacks of storybook land, including Jack of and the Beanstalk fame and possibly Little Jack Horner. Also confirmed at this year’s Comic-con – Emma Swan’s (Jennifer Morrison ) Volkswagen bug will not your average car – that’s right he’s Herbie the Love Bug!

Along with new the faces it has been announced that previous guest stars Emilie de Raivin (Roswell, Lost), who had a recurring role last season as Belle, and Meghan Ory (Supernatural) who played as Ruby(aka Red Riding Hood) will both be upgraded to series regulars.

  1. This show COULD have been incredibly cheesy, but the writing was so consistently high quality, it really rose above the rest.

There are some brilliant one-line zingers here and there, and some of those zingers carry a tremendous emotional wallop. The script is VERY well prepared.

I am totally hooked (no pun intended) on this series.

  2. yeah too late, I’m also hopelessly “hooked”.

This is probably the best lower network show out there and ABC has done an excellent job with it.

  3. I was surprisingly captivated by this series. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I showed up for Jennifer Morrison and found the coolest Red Riding Hood ever. :) Hopefully they’ll branch out and get away from stand alone reimaginings. There’s a lot of material (both traditional and created) at their disposal.

  4. you say that the actress playing Princess Aurora was in game of thrones but there’s no mention of that on her imdb page. also great info and thank god emillie de ravin (or however her name is spelled) is being updated as a regular that should make it awesome.

  5. I liked the reference to One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest in the first season.. If its expanding out to being about all fictional characters rather tan just fairytale it may come unhinged unless the quality of writing is maintained… Its an entertaining forty odd minutes however so good luck to it for the 2nd season.

  6. Very bad looking hook. Looks like it came out off a toy box.

  7. Kinda sorta reminds me of the hook from Hook, not sure why. I cannot wait for Season 2, so many new characters! And everyone remembers now. Some serious s*** is gonna go down, and brother, it is gonna be epic.

  8. Captain Hook is my favorite fairy tale villain of all time; so needless to say I’m ecstatic for the new season. I love how this show takes the classic tales, and gives them a twist. I work late for my job at Dish, so I won’t be home when this premieres. But, I don’t fall behind with my Dish Remote Access App. I can stream shows recorded on my DVR, and live TV right to my phone. There is no better way to spend my train ride home, than getting to know the newest character in Storybrooke. Now that the curse is broken, I can’t wait to see how the characters deal with remembering their true identities, and with Captain Hook joining the cast they may have more to worry about than they imagined.

  9. Why is Mulan in this show?? She was a REAL person for heaven sake!! I’ve seen pictures of her tomb in China!

    What’s next? Pocahontas popping up??

And now Emma’s car is %*%& Herbie?!

    • I get ya, it sounds like a lot. BUT…Disney has never actually used the real historical person(s)when they’ve made a movie. They have always been loosly based off that person. Pocahontas for example was 12 years old when she met John Smith and she didn’t have a romantic relationship with him. It’s a TV show and they do have use of dramatic license :) I would just enjoy that there’s a neat “family” TV show that isn’t trashy. It’s magical and I adore it, personally :)

    • Yeah, she was a real person. So what? they made a Disney movie of her, so why not put her on the show? I mean it’s cool that she was real and all. And it’s cool that you saw her tomb. But really now, Mulan from the Disney movie is no doubt almost entirely different from Mulan in real life. And since OUaT’s Mulan is the one from the cartoon, I can only say that the “Mulan, in Once Upon a Time is NOT real.”

  10. I am excited about the new season coming up, but, if Emma’s car becomes Herbie, well then, this may be my last season. There is a difference between fiction, sci-fi and fantasy. Herbie is NOT sci-fi or fantasy. Please, please, please stick to our “Once Upon a Time” theme. Keep the western tall tales of Paul Bunyon and Pecos Pete (or is it Bill) out of this. Those are NOT “Once Upon a Time” stories. And Herbie is definitely NOT in the OUaT genre. NIX the car, but keep the dragons.

    • I hope it is Herbie. We won’t miss you.

  11. Looks like it will be a very interesting season…. Only there’s one small misprint. The Girl playing sleeping beauty is from the show The Tudors. I think she’d make an awesome addition to Game of Thrones tho.

  12. I think the show was great the first season and can’t wait to see the second BUT sleeping beauty has a NAME and it is AURORA!!!! I do hope that is what you are going to call her, because her name was never sleeping beauty, that is just e name of the movie

  13. Why is herbie in this..…………

  14. Herbie is a Disney character if y’all hasn’t known and maybe he could help her if still having trouble believing….I don’t think im going to be feeling sleeping beauty she’s boring to me I never was into her movie and I can’t wait to see Mulan kick ass!

  15. who was the actress who played Jack?On Once upon a time tonight.02/10/13

    • That would be Cassidy Freeman from Smallville.

  16. aladdin? i bet he’ll be played by sedhil ramamurthy from heroes or naveen andrews from lost, and he’ll be the bad guy to jafar’s good.
also bae has to be peter pan all grown up.
i wonder if emma is the swan princess. not a disney movie, but it could be.
