Olivia Wilde as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Rumor Patrol: Olivia Wilde as Tomb Raiders Lara Croft

Angelina Jolie pushed her career to a new level when she was cast as the lead in the Tomb Raider film adaptation as Lara Croft, the popular and voluptuous video game character. The film was a financial success and spawned a sequel, albeit a very bad one that made less money.

Since then, we’ve seen several more Tomb Raider video games come out, but nothing official on a third major film. There’s been talk of a reboot with rumored interest in Megan Fox to relaunch the franchise, but she claimed to have no interest and nothing came of it. Who then could Paramount Pictures look at to lead a reboot of Tomb Raider? How about the growing-in-popularity Olivia Wilde?

Considering the source of this rumor, there’s a very high chance this is completely falsified, but the possibility of Olivia Wilde getting a lead role as an action star is worth discussing, and something that’s very possible and believable.

Studios would not doubt seek out someone who’s young, well-liked, and quickly earning important parts in major films and Wilde is exactly that person. With a lead role in TRON: Legacy (and its sequels) and a key part in this summer’s Cowboys & Aliens, along with her regular role in the super successful TV series House, Olivia Wilde is being named-dropped for seemingly any and all major lead female roles, including Superman: Man of Steel.

Interestingly enough, the following images appeared online on photobucket (in low quality), featuring Wilde sporting Lara Croft duds. The uploader describes them from a photoshoot for House season 6 but we couldn’t find the official high-res image anywhere:

Could these be the source of the rumors?

I don’t think anyone would take issue with Wilde signing for a role such as this. The only concern is whether Tomb Raider can still sell and whether or not the supporting cast will be beefed up with celebrities to raise it’s profile. If Paramount is looking at another Tomb Raider, it’s likely going to be a “realistic origin story” as Producer Justin Lin (Terminator Salvation) said two years ago.

Is Olivia Wilde a good choice to play Lara Croft?

  1. Im down, I would nt mind an intelligent update or sequel

  2. Awesome This Is Great News IMO Love Olivia Wilde Hope Is True!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. That would be AWESOME.

  4. Olivia Wilde would be a great choice! Please just make a good movie. It needs to stay true to the source material.

  5. While the idea of Wilde playing Lara Croft is reassuring, I think that the real priority is finding a director that can create a compelling film while remaining faithful to the source material.

  6. Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!

  7. I’m all for Olivia Wilde being the new Laura Croft!

  8. Tomb Raider (the game) is being rebooted (as a open world game) and the Lara is young in the game. If you look at the scans of the new game Lara looks exactly like she does in these photos.

  9. i hope the studio reads these, this looks like a really good idea

  10. awesome.

  11. it would be cool to see some dino action like in the first game.

  12. She looks hot and perfect for the role!

  13. im in. she looks hot and she fits perfectly in

  14. I’ve been waiting for another Tomb Raider movie. I love the games, and yes I liked the movies. I hope this is for real.

  15. Ahem, excuse me but, as beautiful and sexy as Olivia is she in no way resembles Lara other than superficially.
In other words Lara has an awesome rack….Olivia has a young mans chest.
I don’t want to see Olivia wearing a fake boob enhancement so…No. No, No, No!

    • Finally! I was reading the comments and I thought: “Is nobody gonna say anything about the two obviously missing qualities of Olivia AKA her rack?” I mean, I really like her and think she’s verry VERRY hot, but she’s just not Lara.
      And a pair of fake/CGI boobs just won’t fly…

    • First off, the reboot revolves around a young Lara, so she hasn’t necessarily developed her giant rack.

Second, Jolie wore padding in the movies as well and she looked fine (as it DAMN FINE)

Third, the giant rack makes the character look cartoonish. A push up bra would give size and not make her look like a porn star.

Fourth, there are not that many talented actresses with giant racks.

  16. Yes please!

  17. Hell YES!!

  18. Yes please…..

  19. Yaeh I’m totally on board,,, :)

  20. Why do they always need to do reboots? WTF is wrong with sequels over reboots? Bring Jolie back for a 3rd go and be done with if. Reboots need to die a slow and painful death.

  21. Blimey I never thought of this, but that is certainly imspired casting.

I’d love her to be Lara – gorgeous and credible. She’d do very well indeed I tihnk (She was the highlight in Tron!)

  22. Nope. This has been flat denied by Wildes reps.

However, they have not denied her possible involvement in the next Superman film. She is the first choice to be Lois Lane in Nolan and Snyders Man Of Steel film. They are just working on her scheduling as we speak. Shhhhhhh…

  23. Reps deny everything – it means jack.

  24. Although the photos aren’t exactly great she does look pretty hot.

I could see her as the new Lara, good choice.

Yeah reps, what do they know.

  25. Are those pics photoshopped btw?

    (Sorry for my ignorance)

  26. Oh just reread the article lol sorry, ignore that last comment ;) (I got distracted by scorching hot Olivia Wild!)

Why is she dressed as Lara for a House photoshoot??

  27. I think Olivia Wilde is a great choice for ANY role she chooses to accept, and I was REALLY happy when I read in Entertainment Weekly that she was starting to look like “the next ‘IT’ girl.” She’s been SO busy with her movie projects lately that she’s on hiatus on “House,” but I’m making SURE to see the movies.

She’s not only beautiful, she’s a very talented actress, as well, and from what I can tell from interviews and stories also just a really wonderful person, too.
    Jeff

  28. Rhona Mitra would be perfect for the role. Giving it to Jolie was a bad move.

  29. They should do a movie based on the Werner Von Croy stories, including Chronicles.
