Josh Gad’s Olaf will be returning to the big screen this year with all of his friends, in Walt Disney Animation’s new Frozen special, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure. The news comes just a few months after Frozen 2 received an official release date back in April, which finally gave fans an official date to mark on their calendars as their long-awaited return trip to the magical land of Arendelle. However, it also left them with the better part of two years to wait before they could likely expect any more official news or story details from the film to be unveiled, much to the chagrin of Frozen fans everywhere.

That’s just par for the course at this point, since after making a splash around the world as one of the most successful animated films of all time back in 2013, there has been a surprisingly low amount of new Frozen-related content released by Disney in the years since. While there was a small Frozen Fever short film released relatively quickly after the first film’s theatrical success, fans have been mostly left waiting and wondering when they might finally get to reunite with the film’s lovable characters again, in a longer and more satisfying way.

Fortunately, it has been announced today by Walt Disney Animation that there will be a new Frozen-themed holiday special hitting theaters later this year, known as Olaf’s Frozen Adventure. Bringing back all of the main characters from the first film – including Olaf, Anna (Kristen Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel, and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff – the new 21-minute long Frozen featurette will play in theaters before Disney and Pixar’s newest feature film, Coco. You can check out the first trailer for Olaf’s Frozen Adventure in the space above. Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios CCO, John Lasseter, expressed his excitement over the news with the following:

“I’m thrilled that Disney Animation’s featurette ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure’ will be coming to theaters in November with Pixar’s ‘Coco.’ It’s a perfect pairing – they’re both beautiful, heartfelt films about families and how people carry traditions forward. I can’t wait for audiences to get to see both of these terrific projects together on the big screen.”

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was originally meant to be a TV holiday special broadcast on ABC later this year, similar to what the featurette’s directors, Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton, did with their beloved Disney and Pixar Prep & Landing holiday specials. However, Lasseter said that the studio eventually decided Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was too cinematic to only receive a TV broadcast, as it follows Olaf on his mission to find a holiday tradition for Anna and Elsa in their first holiday season together since before their parents’ deaths.

It’s not hard to see why Lasseter believes Olaf’s Frozen Adventure to be worthy of a theatrical release either. In addition to bringing back all of the characters and world on the big screen again, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure will also feature four new original songs performed by the Frozen cast members, composed and written by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson (Between the Lines). The trailer even offers a brief taste at those songs, with small clips from the new musical number, “When We’re Together,” placed intermittently throughout, which Lasseter promises “just brings tears to your eyes.” So while they’ll still have to wait until 2019 for a new, feature-length Frozen adventure, fans can rest easy knowing they won’t have to wait nearly as long as they might have thought, before Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven return to the big screen again, this time with even some new music.

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure will play in theaters before Pixar’s Coco starting November 22nd.
