Michael Jackson This Is It Tour

Break out the glitter glove, put on your surgical mask and hold firm to your monkey because once you hear the opening music to the Michael Jackson rehearsal footage movie, I promise you will want to dance.

The last time we talked about the This Is It movie, the conversation quickly turned to the negative side of his life. Maybe rightfully so, maybe not; either way I urge you to watch the trailer below and tell me, look me right in the eye and tell me that it doesn’t bring back a flood of memories from your childhood.

Last week we got the release of the This Is It official poster for the Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) directed backstage, rehearsal footage movie. I thought the movie was going to be playing for a regular run like most films, but as the trailer points out, it will be in theaters for two weeks only. It seems a bit odd to me to do that, especially if it turns a hefty profit like I imagine it will. As the box office numbers climb higher I would imagine we could see a longer run.

Here’s the trailer:

I can’t help but notice the over-hyping of Michael in this trailer – It’s almost laughable at parts, with the King of Pop standing on stage, arms out-stretched, head leaning back to the heavens as angelic voices sing his praises and bathe him in glorious light. Yeah, that seems a little much even for the late mega-pop star. And what is with those grown men reaching out with their arms from behind the guard rail? Come on people, act like adults. I’m going to be completely honest here, I did at one point in my life own the red multi-zipper jacket in elementary school, although for some reason it didn’t seem to make me any cooler or give me the ability to dance.

This Is It - Michael Jackon Multi-zipper jacket

I know it’s going to happen again, so I’ll address it only once. My opinion on Michael Jackson the person is different than my opinion of Michael Jackson the musical artist. I have the ability to separate the two from each other and appreciate the one while questioning the other. I hope you, the readers, have the same ability and keep the comments as focused on the musical side of this movie as possible.

Personally, I’d rather have a Blu-ray disc with all of Jackson’s videos re-mastered in HD to watch and listen to. With that being said, are you looking forward to watching This Is It in theaters or is it something you plan on skipping entirely?

This Is It moonwalks onto screens October 28th, 2009.

  1. Looks like it would of been a massive stage show.

I expect this thing to bank a lot and get tons of attention.

  2. Paul have you ever seen “He May Be Dead But He’s Still Elvis?” I wish this was the last we had to tolerate from the media…

  3. this fricken sucks now that michel jacksons this is it movie is coming out, this means it will make millions of dollers it also sucks becouse boondock saints2 movie comes out the same weekendand if were lucky it will make number 2 at the box office.

its going to be kinda freaky seeing mj come at you in 3d
and they also made this movie way way to fast

  4. @old man – I don’t understand your comment. Are you agreeing with me or disagreeing with me?

  5. hairs standing up..

i love michael as a musician.

    i love him more as a person…

  6. I had the same reaction you did, Paul.
I would say the hyper-hype is consistent
with Jackson’s entire career as the most hyped.

I too can separate the “man” from the entertainer
and my opinion of Michael on both counts is low.

  7. I’m sorry but I can’t go see a movie of a suspected child molester. Yes I know he was found not guilty be reason of lack of evidence but with a crime like that and the reputation he had as I grew up I just can’t.

  8. Phew! I thought it was just me. The guy was bloody INSANE, dies of a drug overdose and now we all (who could ALMOST give a shit) have to be haunted by him now too. Why can’t people just let it die. Isn’t enough that we still have to endure all the Elvis crap?

  9. Can’t wait me either his music was great and he is a legend I am die hard fan of his music .Loved to see at least the movie if not the concert. Will buy it on dvd too. Like I said no one can replace MJ he was the greatest loved his songs because they had pretty good message in it and a depper meaning to his songs thats rare to find this days with others.

  10. I can’t wait to see this movie. I too am a die-hard fan and the memories that I have of MJJ and his music will never be forgotten or tarnished. I watched him become a huge icon, and feel very sad that his life ended so horribly. No other human being can begin to imagine the grief this man had to endure during his life. All though I’m sad that he’s gone, I know that he’s in a much better place than we are. This world is full of greedy, sick, crazy, and….evil people. RIP MJJ

  11. I grew up with MJ and have been to his concerts. I can’t wait so see him. Sad that it has to be this way and the haters out there that believe the tabliods papers stay home. You can’t appreciate talent. Lock yourselves in your tiny room at home and think of someone else to hate, perhaps yourself since having the truth hit you in the face doesn’t do anything. Stay negative and alone. But for everyone else, lets celebrate MJ in his final performance. Does anyone know if we can get the tickets in advance.

  12. in total agreement with ‘fanforever’

  13. mj was special, few artist could command that much attention.just so sad that people are so quick to judge, but then thats being human i suppose, finding fault with each other is second nature.long live the king of pop your music will live forever

  14. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT MICHAEL JACKSON IS THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED!! HES IN THE GUINESS BOOK OF RECORDS 13 TIMES HAS THE BEST SELLING ALBUM IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC SURPASSING EVERYONE AND THERES NO OTHER ARTIST THATS MORE ORIGINAL OR UNIQUE LIKE HIM…CANT EVERYONE JUST LOVE HIM FOR HIS GENIUS MUSIC AND STOP LOOKING ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE…R.I.P MICHAEL THE GREATEST ARTIST THAT THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN AND EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD KNOWS MICHAEL JACKSON!!!

  15. crying! he’s the bestest and greatest ever!! why did he die to soon? ugh… i love michael jackson!!

  16. MJ is the best..!!
I love and miss him so much!
Haters please go and take cold showers…!
    Even the articles also biased!

  17. I literally get the heebee geebees every time I read one of these fawning to the point of crying MJ fans. That actually goes for any over zealous fan of anything. I never understand why people wet their pants like little girls for a celebrity of any type – The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Jonas Brothers.

@orphen – I have to ask, what will a cold shower do to a hater? And of course my article is biased. It’s an EDITORIAL of news events. Hence, MY view on things that are happening. I however, refrain from putting my true feelings on MJ the person and stuck to MJ the musician so I’m not sure what bias you are referring to.

  18. Hey! I’m your neighbor.
    I’ve been spying on you.
I suspect you are biting the heads off kittens,
and making pies out the innards.

So what if you really aren’t,
    I suspect you are.
    I’m accusing you of it.

Now I’m burning your house down

  19. @darkkewlz – Of course the only two thing you mention there that are illegal would be the spying and burning down my house…both of which you are committing. Try another argument.

  20. Just like my dear Mom taught me, if you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all!!

Love, Love, Love Michael Jackson forever!!!!

God bless his children and family.

  21. One more thing, don’t we have enough incivility going on in the world.

Live your life today as if it were your last because it could be.

  22. @grandmother – 1st – I love your cookies; 2nd – are you saying I’m allowed to have my opinion but not allowed to share it because it differs from yours? How “incivil” is that? Why is that only people looking at an ENTERTAINER through rose-colored glasses are the ones with the right to talk?

MJ didn’t cure the world of disease, he didn’t rid the earth of poverty or walk on the moon. He didn’t play his own instruments, or comb his own hair. He was an ordinary man with an extraordinary voice and the ability to dance. Although as he got older his dance moves lost their “fresh” factor.

Stop putting the man on a pedestal on which he doesn’t deserve to sit.

  23. Paul – Yes, Grandmothers do make the best cookies.

Everyone is entitled to share their opinion whenever they wish. It’s been that way since the beginning of time, and I have a feeling, it will continue until the end of time. As for incivility, the short-term is for lack of rudeness, etc. My post was not rude, or directed to you or anyone else for that matter.

I never gave the impression that MJ cured disease, solved poverty, or walked on the moon. He didn’t have to play instruments because his talent came from within his soul, his voice and his artistry. As for combing his own hair, I couldn’t tell you because I didn’t have the opportunity to know him personally. Did you?

Yes, he was an ordinary man, but one with a talent that will never be replaced, admired, appreciated, and loved by so very many people in this world. I’m probably 3xs your age, and let me tell you, all things diminsh as we get older. Every dog has its day.

I admired his courage, and his strength to overcome personal trials and tribulations, to continue what he felt he was here to do….share the love in his heart, make a difference in the planet, and help countless sick children. As a matter of fact, that’s where he problems bagan.

And lastly, I’m at the age in my life where I can decide who I think deserves to be on a pedestal, and if it’s Michael Jackson, so be it. Please don’t attack me for doing so. It’s my perogative, and I’ve certainly earned that much in my lifetime.

  24. @Grandmother

Overall you’ll find that we have one of the more civil discussion areas online here at Screen Rant, but some topics do elicit a bit more… conflict than others.

    Vic

  25. @grandmother – Fair enough. May I have a hard candy please? :)

  26. Okay, so I bite the heads off of cute kittens but I’ve never been for court for it. And oh wait touching little boys is a bit worse than animal cruelty I’d say. The cold shower was refreshing but I still am shaky on MJ. You know the whole molestation thing…. I also locked myself in my room waiting to be slapped in the face with the truth but it never came. So I searched the net looking for answers and all the came back was that he touched little boys…. Sorry folks I tried.

  27. “I can’t help but notice the over-hyping of Michael in this trailer”

    Uhmmm…. duh?

  28. Wasn’t he found NOT guilty for the molestation thing?

Anyway, don’t know if i’ll actually go to the movies to see it, but i wil definitely try my hardest to catch it if it comes on TV. MJ was definitely one of the most talented people EVER. Yes, he was weird, but he still rocked it out!

  29. i will definitely go to see the movie of MJ. i am one of his fans who admire his talent. i don’t care about his personal life because i don’t know him personally.
