First Official U.S. ‘Street Fighter’ Trailer = Weak

It’s kind of strange that Fox released a Japanese trailer for the upcoming video game adaptation Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li before the English language one. Although I guess you could argue that since the original game hails from that country, perhaps they wanted to get those fans excited first before attempting to get us interested.
Nonetheless the Japanese trailer actually gave me some hope for the film because of the way it was cut, it seemed (as most trailers do) to show the best bits and as far you could see from that specific trailer there wasn’t anything overtly bad about it. But this new English language trailer has instantly killed any hopes I had.
Check out the awful trailer (courtesy of IGN.com) below:
Wow, does that look bad…
I mentioned in my post about the bizarre Street Fighter movie poster that the fact they didn’t have much dialogue in the Japanese trailer might be a sign that dialogue isn’t where the strengths of the film lies. But then Screen Rant commenter “SLR” pointed out that it was, after all, a Japanese trailer and therefore why would they have lots of English spoken dialogue? I can accept that logic, but the very fact that they’ve neglected to include much more dialogue in this English language trailer leads me to my original assumption that the dialogue (and probably the story as well) is going to be less than satisfactory (that’s putting it nicely).
And oh man, that dreadful voiceover narration doesn’t help matters. Why do they insist on using that type of voiceover in the trailers for these types of films? It rarely makes it more exciting or look any better, and the use of it here is some of the worst I’ve ever heard.
So what do you make of this new, English language trailer?
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li opens on February 27th.

Around the web:

Some where, a script with an original idea that absolutely rocks is sitting on the shelf of some agent which audiences will never get to see!
As for this, I would rather stick to the original SF Anime!
Ahhh, the typical choir motif in the middle of the trailer. All that is missing would be the word cool and we are all done here.
I was smart not to get my hopes up
After watching the trailer, I thought that if they had different music and dumped the voiceover it would have been MUCH better.
That’s not to say the movie will be good… just that the trailer wouldn’t have seemed as bad.
Vic
some fight for power
some fight for us?
srsly?
Holy Craptastic Crap Batman!!!
I heard Blanka shows up and totally redeems the film! Haha……
Are they banking on Kristen Kruek to draw in the male audience? I don’t get the Chun-Li storyline logic on this one.
EPIC EPIC EPIC FAIL….WOW… HOLLYWOOD WHY????? THE DISAPPOINTMENT CONTINUES.. CLEARLY MAKING SOMETHING LIKE STREET FIGHTER IS NOT THEIR STRONG POINT…I THINK THEY NEED TO LEAVE GENRES LIKE THIS ALONE BECAUSE CLEARLY STORY ISN’T IMPORTANT(sigh)
Horrible.
For a movie about fighting, the fighting looks terrible – not cool or stylistic.
I recommend we ignore this film and go for Ninja Assassin which has some real badass combat and action in it.
i just wanna see her in the blue chun-li outfit, wtf?
I second Vic’s comment.
It doesn’t look all that bad without the cheesy voice-over. I actually watched it the first time around without sound and it wasn’t all that bad.
And really I think the Japanese trailer didn’t come off that bad because I couldn’t understand what the guy was saying, some food for thought.
The trailer isn’t that weak. Take it easy!!!!
Where is RYU!?!?!?!?!?!?!
wtf?!?!?!?! if ryu ist in this movie im ganna be pissed
Saw the trailer a while back. Fail. Watched the movie this morning (no out of pocket expense to me), movie is an UBER fail on multiple levels aside from the casting of Balrog and Gen. The Van Damme version is better, I will even go so far to say that Double Dragon was better than this farce.
What I meant by the casting comment is that those were the only two things about the movie that were not a fail. kristen Kreuk as Chun Li = NEGATIVE GHOSTRIDER.
