It looks like Mel Gibson fans will have to make do with those old DVD box sets of Mad Max and Lethal Weapon.
Hot on the heels of the news that Mel wont be returning to Mad Max comes official news that Warner Bros. has given up on the Lethal Weapon franchise due to Mel’s lack of interest.
Clint Morris at Moviehole (who appears to have a mole deep inside the Warner Bros lot) spoke with an executive who said :
“That one is as good as dead. It won’t happen. Which is a pity”

Franchise creator Shane Black had written a script for a fifth film and producer Joel Silver had the writer in the frame to direct, but Mel Gibson’s loyalties lay with original director (and mentor) Richard Donner who was sidelined from the project due to a very public falling out with Silver.
Donner also had a script for a fifth film in the action franchise written by Channing Gibson (no relation to Mel) but Mel feels that the character of Martin Riggs has come to his natural end and doesn’t see the point of returning to the role.
Having said that apparently Gibson and Donner have a film in development which they plan to shoot next year – so there is the chance that they may get around to talking about Lethal Weapon. However, the Warner Bros source said:
”It could (come up) but I don’t think it will happen that way either”.
A shame, but he at least they’re not going to do an animated sequel without Gibson’s voice.

It should be laid to rest, there is nothing else they can do. All these returns of the 80s heroes, one last adventure/round/mission like Live Free or Die Hard, Rambo, Rocky, etc., that happened with Lethal Weapon 4. You could say that number 4 was their last hooray so what more can Riggs & Murtaugh do? Plus, I can see studio involvement to make it more comedy and PG13 to attract these yung’un crackheads!
Gibson and Donner should get the rights to do a fourth Mad Max film! I would love to see Donner’s vision on that franchise!

Or perhaps Dr. George Miller get the Lethal Weapon rights to try a feature-length 3D anime version and an action adventure videogame? What if, SK47?
as much as i love mel and lethal weapon, i would have to agree if donner is out so should mel, they ended 4 in a matter that ends it. if they do make a 5 great i am there, i am a lethal and mel fan for life.
WE ARE, Toni, Mel + Lethal Weapon fans for life, but our very Mel said «NO». Lets support his point!
Personally, I feel Lethal Weapon made Mel Gibson a global success…. Mad Max almost had him there, but it really was Lethal Weapon who made him a favorite. Sad or not, I feel Stallone’s last Rocky was excellent and was a perfect goodbye for the character.. I feel there is certainly one last Lethal Weapon…. and it would be honorable for Gibson and Glover to bring one final installment to the series…. as much as a thanks for the success it brought them…. but one last point, the third most important person would be Doner… without him would be like an absent leading actor…
