It’s Official: No Lethal Weapon 5

It looks like Mel Gibson fans will have to make do with those old DVD box sets of Mad Max and Lethal Weapon.

Hot on the heels of the news that Mel wont be returning to Mad Max comes official news that Warner Bros. has given up on the Lethal Weapon franchise due to Mel’s lack of interest.

Clint Morris at Moviehole (who appears to have a mole deep inside the Warner Bros lot) spoke with an executive who said :

“That one is as good as dead. It won’t happen. Which is a pity”

Franchise creator Shane Black had written a script for a fifth film and producer Joel Silver had the writer in the frame to direct, but Mel Gibson’s loyalties lay with original director (and mentor) Richard Donner who was sidelined from the project due to a very public falling out with Silver.

Donner also had a script for a fifth film in the action franchise written by Channing Gibson (no relation to Mel) but Mel feels that the character of Martin Riggs has come to his natural end and doesn’t see the point of returning to the role.

Having said that apparently Gibson and Donner have a film in development which they plan to shoot next year – so there is the chance that they may get around to talking about Lethal Weapon. However, the Warner Bros source said:

”It could (come up) but I don’t think it will happen that way either”.

A shame, but he at least they’re not going to do an animated sequel without Gibson’s voice.

  1. It should be laid to rest, there is nothing else they can do. All these returns of the 80s heroes, one last adventure/round/mission like Live Free or Die Hard, Rambo, Rocky, etc., that happened with Lethal Weapon 4. You could say that number 4 was their last hooray so what more can Riggs & Murtaugh do? Plus, I can see studio involvement to make it more comedy and PG13 to attract these yung’un crackheads!
Gibson and Donner should get the rights to do a fourth Mad Max film! I would love to see Donner’s vision on that franchise!

    • I agree that rigs and murtaugh had their end in the forth movie, however, there needs to be new characters for number 5. I’m sure that Hollywood can work something out. the script needs to be changed for the new characters. Example: Riggs and murtaugh have retired but now a new threat shakes the streets of LA. A former crimelord of the russian syndicate is making a fortune by selling former technology from the cold war to street gangs. As a result, there have been several murders mainly directed towards LA cops. Feeling that he is too old for the job, Riggs calls a friend in the NYPD to transfer his younger brother,Detective Johnathan(Johnny) Riggs to the LAPD. Like his older brother, Johnny is just as crazy and twice as dangerous, willing to do anything necessary to solve a case. However, Murtaugh finds out about Riggs brother being on the case so he makes a call to a longtime friend of his,Soloman Evans, who is a veteran FBI agent in Virginia to aid Johnny with solving the murders and to keep an eye on young riggs. The two reluctantly join forces and redefine the Partner/friend relationship as the streets of LA become the hotspot of an old man’s unfinished vendetta between cops and gangsters. More explosions and humor with cameo apperances by Mel gibson and Danny glover, this Lethal Weapon gives a new definition of tough cops… Note: this was just an example for the LEwepon 5 plot.

      • Plus if hollywood decides to continue with Lethal Weapon 5 I recomend that Samuel Jackson and Hugh Jackman should take the new character roles.

        • Mel gibson should reconsider and make a cameo apperance. No lethal weapon movie would be good without him or Danny Glover even if it is a small part.

    • They Should make 5 about Rig’s son and murtaugh’s grandson. Make a jump in time about 20 years. Make the characters old. Look at Stan Lee he is 91 years old and still runs around.

  2. Im glad this isn’t happening.

  3. Or perhaps Dr. George Miller get the Lethal Weapon rights to try a feature-length 3D anime version and an action adventure videogame? What if, SK47?

  4. as much as i love mel and lethal weapon, i would have to agree if donner is out so should mel, they ended 4 in a matter that ends it. if they do make a 5 great i am there, i am a lethal and mel fan for life.

  5. WE ARE, Toni, Mel + Lethal Weapon fans for life, but our very Mel said «NO». Lets support his point!

  6. Personally, I feel Lethal Weapon made Mel Gibson a global success…. Mad Max almost had him there, but it really was Lethal Weapon who made him a favorite. Sad or not, I feel Stallone’s last Rocky was excellent and was a perfect goodbye for the character.. I feel there is certainly one last Lethal Weapon…. and it would be honorable for Gibson and Glover to bring one final installment to the series…. as much as a thanks for the success it brought them…. but one last point, the third most important person would be Doner… without him would be like an absent leading actor…

  7. Oh come ON MEL GIBSON STALLONE HAS THE FINAL ROCKY AND HE ENDEN GREATFULL LETHAL WEAPON NEEDS A ENDEN A LETHAL WEAPON 5 )’M A BIG FAN AND ) HOPE IN A LETHAL WEAPON 5 BECAUSE THEY MUST ENDED WITH A NEW FILM ANIWAYS IF HE MADE A NEW MOVIE IT’S A GREAT SUCCES A LOTS OF MONEY MEL GIBSON AND DADDY GLOVER FOREVER!!

  8. Riggs is married; Murtaw is retired. The story is over. All 4 installments were well-written with great stunts and a lot of heart. I even think 4 is the best in some ways. Best leave it alone. No disrespect to Mel.

  9. yes we need another Lethal Weapon the world could use it,we’ve gotten way to serious with the corporate thing including systems and structures in this world we all need to watch someone let loose for a change and its been a long time coming and we don’t just need a someone at this point we need our true heros Mr.Mel Gibson ,Mr.Danny Glover and yes Mr.Joe Pesci, they have a way of saying it like no others let us see a Lethal weapon 5 ,a 6 ,a 7 let’s just keep it rolling cause we all need some good ol’ humour in our lives.

  10. If they brought gibson and glover back for another lethal weapon or another film I would go see it.

  11. I am really impressed with your writing skills and also with the
layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?

Either way keep up the excellent quality writing, it’s rare to see a nice blog like this one nowadays.
