No rumors here folks – we’ve got some rock solid, straight from Marvel Studios news regarding the Avengers, Iron Man 2 & 3, Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. and the final word on the the Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard story.
That’s a lot of stuff for one post!

|
Highlights:
- Robert Downey Jr. has signed a FOUR picture deal with Marvel Studios. Presumably this means two more Iron Man movies plus the Avengers film.
- Jon Favreau will direct Iron Man 2, but there’s no word at this time whether he will direct Iron Man 3. Favreau will not be directing Avengers, but will be Executive Producer on the film.
- It’s now official that Don Cheadle has replaced Terrence Howard as James Rhodes – not only in Iron Man 2 (and 3) but also in the Avengers movie. (Terrence Howard must be hating life right now.)
- It seems that Hulk will not be the villain in the Avengers movie, but he will be teaming up with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor (yes, Thor) and other unspecified superheroes to battle some formidable foe.

I know that many people wanted Jon Favreau to direct Avengers, but with the release dates of that film and Iron Man 2 just over a year apart, there was no way he could direct both (even though he wanted to). Personally I can’t wait until the details spill on the whole Marvel Studios/Terrence Howard fallout.
The official press release from Marvel Studios is below:

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. AND JON FAVREAU SUIT UP FOR MARVEL STUDIOS’ THE AVENGERS AND IRON MAN 2
As part of his four picture deal with Marvel Studios, Robert Downey Jr. is appearing as Tony Stark in THE AVENGERS motion picture, as well as reprising his starring role as the larger-than-life leading character in IRON MAN 2. Jon Favreau will return to direct the sequel to the blockbuster IRON MAN, which to date has grossed over $578 million worldwide, as well as executive produce THE AVENGERS.
Academy Award® nominee Downey was most recently seen in the summer comedy blockbuster TROPIC THUNDER starring opposite Ben Stiller and Jack Black. Before Iron Man, he was best known for his film roles in KISS KISS BANG BANG, WONDER BOYS and CHAPLIN, the film for which he was nominated for an Oscar®.
In addition to directing the first IRON MAN, Favreau has previously directed ELF, ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE and MADE. He is also well known for writing and starring in SWINGERS. He will next be seen acting in FOUR CHRISTMASES, I LOVE YOU MAN and COUPLES RETREAT.
DON CHEADLE WILL STAR AS RHODEY IN IRON MAN 2
Marvel Studios is pleased today to confirm that an agreement has been finalized with award-winning actor Don Cheadle to take on the role of Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Marvel’s IRON MAN 2 due in theaters on May 7, 2010. In casting Cheadle, Marvel replaces Terrence Howard who appeared in the role of Rhodey in Iron Man.
Cheadle is also signed on to perform the same role in THE AVENGERS and subsequent installments of the IRON MAN franchise.
“We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to new heights,” said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.
Cheadle is best known for his Oscar® nominated lead performance in HOTEL RWANDA as well as his role as Basher Tarr in the OCEAN’S franchise, CRASH and SWORDFISH.
Based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN 2 continues the story of this summer’s box office blockbuster IRON MAN, the first feature film produced independently by Marvel Studios. IRON MAN 2 will be produced by Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito, Jon Favreau, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Denis Stewart.
In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.
The highly anticipated sequel to IRON MAN will be released in theatres on May 7, 2010 and THE AVENGERS will be released July 15, 2011. Both films will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

That actually sounds pretty awesome, that was what they used in next avengers however…So it would almost be repeating themselves.
What about we have Pym make it in the Ant man movie as a senteitn being (lets say that Ant man is a prequle to Iron Man) then after his own adventure is when Ultron goes nuts at the end and sets up a cliffhanger for The avengers movie
Sounds good to me G.K
I really think screenwriters should be checking posts on sites like this, in relation to superhero flicks. I see alot of good ideas here, if we could all just find a way to rise up and become one collective screen writer instead of just a bunch of fans with a couple of creative ideas…
:’( you just said one of my failed dreams! I want to try to get into that business
@G.K
You and me both brother. If I had even the smallest inkling on how, I think I really would try. I guess we should try writing freelance, maybe writing for some websites or something like a small local paper. I dont know about you, but for me, it may be a little too late to make that a career choice. Although I would love to write part time for a website. Just have to find one that doesnt have too many writers already. And one that’s into what Im into. I actually think I’d make a great tv critic, since right now Im crippled by a back surgery and all I can really do is watch tv. If anyone is starting their own movie/tv website and needs a writer, let me know! Ha. But seriously, there are alot of really creative people posting here at screenrant. Thats why I love posing questions about who should be a villain, or what the plot should be. So many cool things for me to geek out about.
@790,
That’s nuts.
I’m gonna play my disbelief card on that report. There is no way a secondary character is getting Tom Henks money and potentially more than Johnny Depp for the Avengers in which he will have barely any screen time.
Why pay him 30, when he can and will do it for less than a quarter of that? Especially if Marvel spent time negotiation with Favreau to get him to come back.
And Tom Hanks is spelt with an “a”…again…as it always should be, heh
hey vic Thanx for al this info cant wait for the films,
but 1 question and new news on the
CAP Prequel ?
isin it gunna be released like a few weeks B4 the Avengers ?
Well Rob,,, I guess 30+ is a little high but you know he’s getting at least 12 to 15+ mil.
He’s also getting points on attendance, so at the end of it all he will make over 30 mil+ on Iron Man 2…
How much do you suppose Howard’s agent was asking for??? I bet it was right around the same…
My point is, if anyones pissed at Marvel for recasting Cheadle, they need to consider Downey Jr, had the last word on it…
On the writing side, I’ll keep you in mind Deadpool,,,as movieguys grows we will be looking for more writers…
that sucks about your back. I hope you have a speedy recovery…

@790
Thanks alot, I appreciate it. I think I’ve interacted with you on alot of threads here, but I never knew you ran a site of your own. I’ll definitely check it out, since I tend to agree with you on just about everything I’ve seen you post on. And I appreciate the get well soon. It’s given me time to catch up on movies from last year. I think I’ve seen just about everything now!
Thanks Deadpool,,,
I actually don’t run the site but I have some influence…
@790
Cool. I dig a place that you can go to read the news you want and get a frank opinion on it. You guys have got yourselves a fan.
Don’t worry Screen Rant, I can never leave you! We can share, right?!? Good stuff, good stuff…
Anyone else on the villain for the Avengers? Should it be a team up or just a solo villain? How about the Leader?
@Deadpool
I looked at that site you posted and i gotta say that is about the funniest thing ive seen so far lol1 they do have way too much time on their hands.
Im looking forward to the Avengers movie. Bunch of superheros teaming up to kick some butt sounds good to me.
Im not devestated by the whole Cheadle/howard thing but he does need to bulk up, way too skinny.
@Jess
Yeah, glad you got a kick out of that. I sure did. Cheadle needs to add a good 15 lbs of muscle. If he can do that, he could pull off Rhodey. I never really thought of it like this, but 790 brought this to my attention:
What part did RDJ play in the recasting? Interesting to think about
Your Welcome Deadpool,,,
Unfortunilty I don’t know enough about The Avengers to comment on the villians…
Sure wish KEL was around.
So Cheadle is making more the RDJ?
Sounds questionable.
Well Gary I’m sure RDJ is getting way more than Cheadle…
Especially since it appears he has resigned to film Iron Man 2. Everyones getting more money to do the sequel. Except Howard.
Gary are you aware that Keanu Reeves made over 100 mil on Matrix 2 & 3?
Mostly because of the options on marks…(Attendance / worldwide Box office receipts)
I don’t know where 790 pulled that $30MM number from but there is NO way that’s accurate.
Vic
Vic, I heard Bale made over 50 mil on TDK, after all the residuals kicked in. And that’s not including the dvd sales…
Like I said earlier, 30+ was a little high for Cheadle, but I’m sure RDJ is getting over 20mil easy for IM2.
That’s his base price. He’s no doubt getting double that if the films a hit.
Sure, I hear ya – I just don’t want to start a rumor that Cheadle is getting $30MM for Iron Man 2.
Vic
My bad.
Damn Cheadle,,,
Vic,
does the Merlin email address work better ?
I hope nothings bouncing back.
I am going to be getting a new computer soon,
that might help.
Hulk was always wild and untamed in the classic comic tales…he has to stay like that…we don’t want a big cuddly green teddy in future films…he’s a goodie but he’s still a threat when he’s MAD…That’s why he has to battle the main Avengers at first..then helps them out when they’re getting batterd by the villian(s)…By the way X3 was brilliant!!!
Being the Hulk fan that I am (wiki it if u need) he has had multiple versions of himself, being different crossroads in life, where at one time he had been all coherent and smart…however I do agree if we want to stick with the comic plots, then we would have to see him fight first the avengers, then join…but seeing as you liked XMen3, how many things did they change on X3 from original comic plot to fit the movie version….so if they jump to a smarter hulk, it would be to appease certain fans, not ALL fans.
Im looking foward to the Avengrs movie as long as they dont screw it up like they did with Xm3 like l a was saying.
Would someone point me to where I can find the guy who created the time machine, for goodness sake???!!! I need to jump to 2010 right now!!
RDJ is a great actor as Stark..
Cheadle? i’ll always love his act, but as Rhodey? he need to do a lot of things to convince me..
What do u guys think about my casting call for AVENGERS:
1. Iron Man: RDJ, of course
2. Hulk: E. Norton, nuff said.
3. Thor: Viggo mortensen, he looks fit with beard, sword, and body armour in LOTR, i bet he will fit with Mjolnir in 2011.
4. Captain america: Matthew Fox, He has a “40’s boyscout” charisma.
5. Nick Fury: Sam L. Jackson
6. Giant Man: Matthew McConaughey, i’d like to stick with bryan hitch choice.
7. Wasp: Eva Longoria.
So waddaya think?
This members of Avengers is based on Ultimates 1&2..
I think that Howard made a good Rhodey so Cheadle is going to have to prove to be an awesome War Machine, but when they make War Machine they need to make the armour bulkier as well as Cheadle.
The post earlier about Hulk having Banner’s intelligence was a little off the Gray Hulk was street smart and had about normal intelligence, the professor Hulk was bigger then the other Hulks but had banners intelect making him a very poor fighter that even got beat by the Juggernaut. The Hulk and Bruce aslo never got along until Abomination made Betty die from radiation poisoning and was the most poerful Hulk until he came back for World War Hulk
@ImJustAFan
me personally i do not think Viggo Mortensen would make a very good Thor because Thor is 6′6 640lbs Viggo might be able to play donald Blake if they plan on going by the comic
i almost forgot
6. Giant Man: Matthew McConaughey, i’d like to stick with bryan hitch choice.
good choice lol
