A teaser trailer has been released for Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a family-friendly fantasy flick conceived by Peter Hedges – the screenwriter behind movies like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, About a Boy, and the writer/director of Dan in Real Life.
Seeing how this movie – about a childless couple that wishes for… well, a child and is granted one – reads on paper as a “kinder” variation on Pinocchio, does the theatrical preview make it look all the more (or less) appealing?
First, here’s a bit more information on the setup for Odd Life of Timothy Green: Married couple Jim (Joel Edgerton) and Cindy Green (Jennifer Garner) have been trying desperately to conceive a child, but to no avail. One day, on a whim, they start scribbling down their wishes for what kind of kid they’d like – one who’d be “a glass half-full person” and “Picasso with a pencil,” among other things.
After writing down who-knows-how-many of said wishes, Jim and Cindy bury the notes inside a wooden box in their backyard. Then, one strange and magical night, a mysterious young boy covered in mud shows up at their home, claiming to be their son.

Props to Hedges for delivering a movie-for-all-ages that isn’t based on some nostalgic television show; isn’t a computer-animated feature full to the brim with distracting celebrity voice actors; and looks to offer more than just inane slapstick humor or pop-culture references as entertainment. In this day and age, it’s rare to see an original family-friendly picture like The Odd Life of Timothy Green being made (not including most Pixar movies, that is).
With that said: this trailer doesn’t exactly do Timothy Green any favors. It makes the film look almost sickeningly sentimental, rather than genuinely moving or heartfelt. The idea of a magical young boy who changes the lives of those around him could make for a charming little fantasy story (or a creepy horror tale – but I digress). However, a film with that premise could also easily become too corny in the wrong hands – as seems to be the situation here.
Not all hope is lost yet, though. Trailers for movies that wear their emotions and morals on their sleeve (like Odd Life of Timothy Green) often feel excessively saccharine, since they’re trying to tug on your heart-strings within the span of two minutes. So maybe the final product will be better than this preview indicates… Maybe.

This movie was filming near where I live and I had a chance to hang out around the set one day. A lot of the cast came out to talk with people and they were all very nice.
Common and Dianne Wiest will both be in the
movie, and apparently there’s a soccer game scene.
That’s all I know. It looks like it could be interesting though.
We must live near each other – I live in Avondale Estates where they filmed some of the school scenes. My next door neighbor’s son was the stand-in for the “Timothy Green” character during filming.
T.M. Wright’s first publication was the non-fiction study of unidentified flying objects, entitled The Intelligent Man’s Guide to Flying Saucers in 1968 for AS Barnes. Strange Seed had five foreign editions.
His seventh novel, A Manhattan Ghost Story, has had 14 foreign editions and was optioned to be filmed in the 1980s. A screenplay was written by Ronald Bass for which he was paid two million US dollars, a record breaking amount for an adaptation of a novel to the screen. The option was taken over by Robert Lawrence Productions in 1991, and then exercised in 1993. Many actors and directors have been attached to the project over the years including Wayne Wang, Julia Roberts, and Sharon Stone (who received five million US dollars because of her pay or play contract). The film is currently in development at Touchstone Pictures.
