‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’ Trailer Teases a Modern-Day Fairy Tale

Disney is hoping to draw in families with a bit of counter-programming this summer, with The Odd Life of Timothy Green. The film is based on an original story by no-name actor Ahmet Zappa – who’s helping to develop the Tiki and Museum of the Weird movies for the Mouse House – with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Peter Hedges (Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life) handling screenwriting and directing duties.

Odd Life of Timothy Green revolves around married couple Cindy (Jennifer Garner) and Jim Green (Joel Edgerton), who have recently learned it is simply not feasible for them to have their own child together. As a means of dealing with shattered dreams, the two scribble down ideas for their “ideal son” and bury it in a box in their backyard… only to be shocked when their dream child (Cameron Adams) literally grows from said ideas.

Based on the new trailer for Odd Life of Timothy Green, Hedges (whose screenwriting credits also include What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and About a Boy) appears to have crafted a pretty squeaky-clean, modern fairy tale flick that’s friendly to moviegoers of all ages. All in all, this new theatrical preview does a better job of making the film look enchanting – as opposed to the more hokey and schmaltzy teaser trailer – though, it doesn’t hurt that generally reliable performers like Edgerton (Warrior) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married) are onboard.

Still, as harmless and good-natured (to a fault?) as Odd Life of Timothy Green looks, one has to wonder how it will fare at the box office. Obviously, there won’t be any overlap with The Expendables 2, but Timothy Green is also due to open against ParaNorman during its initial weekend. The latter just seems more likely to emerge as the triumphant family flick, seeing how early trailers suggest it will deliver better entertainment value – for both the juice box crowd and older moviegoers.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green opens in theaters around the U.S. on August 15th, 2012.

  1. I like Sandy because he puts the trailers at the top of the page..no effort required

    • Lol, that’s actually just our new policy here on Screen Rant, as far as trailer articles go.

Like you said – it makes it easier for people to immediately check out the trailer (then read all the analysis afterwards, if they like). 8-)

  2. This seems awfully similar to a book I bought for my mother called “The Snow Child”. It’s pretty recent, and the authors first book (I can’t recall her name off hand) , but it is set in the 1920′s and has the exact same premise.

  3. What a fantastic wholesome family film. Everyone in your family will love this movie – even a five year old could find something they like in this film. The movie is full of moments that could make you laugh and cry and some that make you cry from laughing. The comedic moments are not just light chuckles; many of them are bursts of laughter. The movie is about a couples’ struggle to conceive a child and their journey into exploring adoption. This is really a touching movie for anyone with or without kids. I love that Disney makes movies like this. Nice clean humor, nothing offensive or crude, and the target audience doesn’t seem to be ordering happy meals. It was interesting, overly engaging, and a hundred times better than expected. This is a family film that will be enjoyed by everyone from your smallest child to your oldest grandparent.
