Despite a moderate box office take, the Ocean’s Eleven franchise spawned three movies in the 2000s featuring George Clooney, Matt Damon, and a talented team of leading men. Now director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) is helming a lady-led spinoff called Ocean’s Eight, which is currently set for a 2018 release. Sandra Bullock (Gravity) will lead a whole new team of dashing thieves and is rumored to be playing Danny Ocean’s sister. Matt Damon is expected to reprise his role from the original trilogy in some capacity, but it is uncertain whether Clooney will return. Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Cate Blanchett (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland), Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), and Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) will round out the cast.
In August, musician and actress Rihanna was also announced as a member of the team. While Rihanna is better known for her career as a pop star, she continues to break into Hollywood with a series of leading roles. Rihanna starred in the animated Home and also appeared in films like Annie and Battleship. While many details of Ocean’s Eight‘s plot are being kept under wraps, some photos from the set have begun to surface. The latest are sure to give fans of Rihanna a hint of what role she plays in the movie.
People recently revealed new photos of Rihanna assumably undercover. She sports a gray jumpsuit with a tag naming her “Angela,” a member of Facility Services. In the first photo, Rihanna is pushing a garbage can around while listening to a pair of headphones. The second photo shows Rihanna sharing lunch and her headphones with Bullock’s character. Is it possible that they’re not listening to music, but listening in on someone during a mission?
Despite the star power of the female led movie, Ocean’s Eight faces an uphill battle at the box office. With a June 8 release date, it will be placed in the Summer 2018 blockbuster box office season against some stiff competition. The original trilogy saw diminishing returns, with the 2001 original as the highest domestically and internationally. The last movie to get the reboot with a female-led cast was 2016’s Ghostbusters, which was a box office disappointment factored against its enormous budget. It’s possible that Ocean’s Eight will be tenable but hopefully has a budget that will position it to be successful.
