First Trailer for Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Film ‘Oblivion’

Published 2 years ago by , Updated December 12th, 2012 at 9:35 am,

Yesterday, we shared a new poster for the Tom Cruise sci-fi film Oblivion, and today we have the first trailer. The movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy), takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where earth has been ravaged by decades of war with an alien race.

The first trailer gives viewers a good sense of the movie’s grand visual scope, contrasting sleek space technology with the gritty remnants of human civilization. It also reveals a bit of the movie’s mysterious plot, showing Morgan Freeman’s Morpheus-like character and the existence of a world on earth that isn’t supposed to exist.

Here’s the official synopsis for Oblivion:

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

While the visuals and action sequences look fairly spectacular, the mystery element to Oblivion is the most intriguing part of the trailer. If it has been 60 years since the planet was destroyed, how come Tom Cruise seems to have such a strong memory of Earth as it was? Has his memory been tampered with in some way (a la Total Recall)? Or could it be that Cruise is a clone/avatar of some kind, plugged into a machine somewhere else and doing the work on earth remotely (a la Avatar or The Matrix)?

No matter the answer, one can expect that the script, penned by Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed) and polished by Academy Award winner Michael Arndt (Star Wars: Episode 7), will deliver a compelling and action-packed story.

Presumably, the next trailer will reveal a bit more of the plot and answer some of these questions, hopefully without giving away too much. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts on Oblivion in the comments.

Oblivion opens in theaters on April 19th, 2013.

  1. Why did Morgan Freeman’s name not appear in the trailer?

    • This is the story of Scientology.

  2. I think it looks really good. I like tom cruise in action and/or scifi roles so this should be an entertaining flick at least.

  3. Wall-E prequel?

    • That’s what i thought…

    • Or Transformers pre-Junkeon. :-D

  4. Tom Cruise strapped to a chair… again…

  5. I’m a sucker for Tom Cruise sci fi vehicles.

  6. That thing at 2:12 reminds me of those creatures in Twilight Princess… if anyone played that game.

  7. Why is he wearing a NYY baseball hat hundreds of years from now?

    • Why not?

    • War of the Worlds part 2

  8. I must say, that looks pretty interesting…

  9. Did I just see a tusken raider (sand people)? LOL.

Anyhow, this looks like a typical sci-fi film (Mad Max, Logan’s Run, Star Wars, and a lot more), but I hope it’s better than the lackluster trailer.

    • Well you just named 3 pretty awesome movies, exempting the prequels.

  10. This movie looks pretty awesome, but I hate it when trailers spoil too much of the movie. Oh well. I guess I only have myself to blame for being such a trailer-addicted cinephile.

  11. Looks pretty cool! A bit refreshing to see a high budget flick that’s not a sequel/remake. :)

  12. Wow. I gotta say I was pleasently suprised. I didn’t have high hopes for the trailer from what I’ve read beforehand but this looks pretty awesome. And for as much cruise gets bad raps he’s a decent actor.

  13. Looks great to me I’m not the biggest Cruise Fan I’ve never seen him in a role where he played a more imperfect character with human emotion and any time I saw him try that it looked really bad but this trailer makes it look like he did, I’ll see this when it comes out for sure.

    • You should check out Born on the 4th of July, Jerry McGuire, Magnolia, or Last Samurai then

      • Definitely Last Samurai.

        • THE LAST SAMURAI (TLS) was an outstanding Cruise flick, outstanding! Any one who enjoys dramas and or period pieces but who has not seen TLS simply because it features Tom Cruise is doing themselves as serious dis-justice.

      • Also, try “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds” if you want to see Cruise being imperfect and vulnerable in a science fictional setting.

    • Also You should watch Jerry Maguire. :)

    • oops!!! Mr WolvoMS already mentionned it. :)

  15. ok this looks pretty sick and finally something original cant wait to see this

  16. This looks awesome! Next year is going to be great for science fiction movies! Pacific Rim, Elysium and others I can’t remember lol

    • Yeah, and there’s that little movie with a couple of aliens that fly and can leap tall buildings. :-P

  17. Love It!!! This movie looks Promising. Tom Cruise Rocks! :)

  18. Feel the colors are not good in that, feels to cool and disconnected as a viewer ! But i guess they are going for that destroyed look. Other then that, count me in ! We need more movies like this, new ideas and no remakes and reboots anymore !

  19. This looks great!

  20. Can’t wait for Guardians of the Galaxy now!!

  21. Tom Cruise is dangerous.

    Google Scientology & Hollywood…..

    • Why?

      • Don’t feed the dodo troll…

  22. Am I the only one that got a ‘Moon’ vibe from the trailer?

    • Yes, but it’s more the “wallE” vibe i get =)

    • Moon? The slow burning psychological thriller?

      • Y’know, Clones, false memories, an unwitting slave to a shadowy agenda, not being told the whole picture etc…

  23. I would bet money that his ‘vivid memories of earth as it was’ is just a plot device. I bet you its not anything cool like a plugged-in avatar or some sort of clone or anything like that.

    • That said “earth is a memory (worth fighting for)” could also be a big hint.

  24. people you have no idea how amazing this movie will be…i read the script and wow,wow,wow-you will be blown away.

  25. Sounds like another Matrix.

    • yeah, I get that vibe from Morgan Freeman’s character

  26. Aliens sure do have it out for us.

Damn, what did we do to aliens?

Not like we take them and stick probes up their butt like they did to me…er..I MEAN OTHERS!

How about that Freshman winning the Heisman????

  27. wow. I’m pretty excited to see this

  28. Looks good. I’d go see it.
