Let me say this first and foremost: McG is probably the best panel speaker I’ve ever heard. Seriously.
The guy is just charismatic; no matter what you think of his work, its hard to deny he’s a likable dude in person. And its probably for that reason that he was able to sell the hell out of Terminator Salvation at this year’s New York Comic Con–even to the most ardent fanboy non-believer.

I’ll make with the good stuff up front and tell you about all the little gems that were dropped during the Terminator Salvation panel:
- Terminator Salvation (and subsequent sequels) will fill in the gap of time between the end of T3 and year 2029, which (as we are told in T1) is the year Kyle Reese goes back in time to save Sarah Connor.
- McG hinted that “Sarah Connor” will be a key figure in Terminator Salvation; he went on to hint that Linda Hamilton might be involved in the project, somehow, someway.
- A major plot-element of Terminator Salvation will deal with how John Connor convinces the scattered bands of human survivors that he is the prophecized messiah of mankind; it will also deal with how Skynet begins to capture human subjects in order to study their DNA, trying to develop the first Terminator model that looks, sounds, and passes for human (the T-800).
- Terminator Salvation will largely adhere to the mythology established by James Cameron in T1 and T2. The only bits of T3 in the Salvation storyline will be the actual events of judgment day (John Connor and his future wife Kate Brewster hiding in a bomb shelter when judgment day occurs).
- A big dilemma facing the film right now is finding the technology to impose images of a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger onto the body of the newly developed T-800.

That’s all the major stuff, but really, the breaking news paled in comparison to McG’s showmanship. He’s not an egotistical man, as was evidenced when he claimed, “I hate Mcg too.” He also made fun of himself at many turns–for getting thrown off Superman Returns due to his fear of flying, and for making the Charlie’s Angels films, which he acknowledged as being low rungs on his climb up the Hollywood ladder, but still enjoyable films all the same. He was also very engaging with the fans, pulling people up on stage to asks questions or sit on the panel with him. A brave move, considering the how rabid the fanboy crowds of Comic Con can be.
McG also took repeated questions about the now-infamous Christian Bale blow-up on the set of Terminator Salvation. McG totally defended his T4 star, saying that Christian had accepted responsibility for his loss of temper; that those kinds of “episodes” always happen on the set of a movie (true), and that if anything, the violation that occured was someone on the crew leaking the audio clip to the public. According to McG, what happens on a movie set should stay on a movie set. He finished by adding that no matter what Christian did, actors should never feel like they have to watch out for embarrassing YouTube moments while in the midst of the creative process.
McG, a loyal director.
Other than that, all that happened was a phone call to Christian Bale’s wife, so that she could personally revel in the fan enthusiasm for Terminator Salvation. What about you? Are you excited for T4 or do you still have your doubts? Sound off and let us know.

Nice. I tend to think that McG takes a lot of heat that he doesn’t deserve. Maybe if he stopped going by that “handle” and just used his actual name a lot of that would go away.
Vic
To be honest I think he does deserve the flack he gets if you look at his resume. The only good thing that his name has even been attached to as far as I’m concerned is Supernatural. Terminator seems like it will be good, but can’t really know yet.
I am more then willing to give this guy a chance .
I am going to let McGs work on this film speak for itself.
why don’t they just CGI his face. im sure it would look convincing enough
How great this movie is will decide how bright McG’s director future is. So far, I’m pretty excited and liking a lot of what I see/hear (minus Bale’s outburst).
Great post Kofi, thanks for keeping us in the NYCC loop!
OOPS please edit above curse and any kids cover your ears I apologize. McG brings it out in me
@Lord Garth
Oops, delete that one by mistake. You can repost it minus the profanity if you like.
Vic
I am excited to see the movie, I’m trying to give McG the benefit of the doubt because really, the terminator movies are just action movies, and he’s shown he can do action. But what really pisses me off about this guy is how he always seems to make it out like he was stuck with the name McG, like it’s out of his hands. Just start going by your real name for god sakes. It’s not like someone is making you go by that name, it’s your choice, if you “hate McG too” then stop calling yourself McG!
I don’t get all the fanboy McG bashing. The first Charlies Angel’s was pretty good, the second watchable. We are Marshall was a really solid sports film.
I guess its the silly name!

Well if they have the technology to make brad pitt into any age possible I’m sure they can put Arnie’s face on a terminator.
“A big dilemma facing the film right now is finding the technology to impose images of a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger onto the body of the newly developed T-800.”
I read something about giving Jeff Bridges an electronic plastic surgery thing to make present-day Bridges connect with yesterday’s Flynn…I think it was here, wasn’t it?
I thought so!!!

Wait wait wait… did JMoney say that the Terminator movies are “just” action movies???
Dem’s fightin’ words!!! lol
Anyway, why don’t they use the tech Cameron is using for Avatar to put the face on the T-800?? We’ve seen that it works very well, I forgot the name though…
I’m over 40 years old, and have NEVER seen a “charismatic” person, who did not have a MONUMENTAL ego, so saying that he isn’t “egotistical,” is extraordinarily hard to believe. I’m not saying ego is necessarily a bad thing all the time, but lets call an orange an “orange,” huh?
Bill Clinton was likely the most charismatic person in the last 20 years to come around, a really nice guy, but the guy ooooozed EGO. Too bad you have to practically be a social scientist to decipher other people’s politically correct posts, and get to the truth anymore.
Ken J, hahaha, all I meant was that it wasn’t like he is making Godfather IV. As long as the wicked action is there and the cheesy dialogue is sparce then the movie will be decent. People tend to gloss over the faults of their favourite old movies, go bac and watch T1, it isn’t masterpiece theatre, but it is a wicked action movie. And I think McG has the ability to pull that off.
Darwin,
I didn’t have time to Rorschach blot the guy, I’m just saying that he was quick to make all the McG jokes that everyone would have (or are, on this site at least) made. I appreciate a person who can be self-deprecating. As to the semantics of ego vs. non-ego, I’ll leave that to you to decide.
JMoney, I think you underestimate my Terminator fanboyism. It’s not a movie I loved seeing “back in the day.” I regularly watch T1 and T2 all the time, I never get sick of it, T2 especially. T1 was a low budget B-movie, but was done so well that you get all of the suspense and drama of a big budget blockbuster. T2 was a big budget blockbuster with the even more attention to detail, and is probably the closest to a perfect movie as anyone is going to get in my opinion.
So I know what you’re getting at, but in my mind, doing a Terminator movie is more important than a Godfather movie.
I’m a Terminator geek, what can I say, lol.
Honestly, I’ll just let the movie speak for itself. But I personally think it will be a smash hit.
