No General Ross in Iron Man 2 or Thor

iron man 2 general ross cameos No General Ross in Iron Man 2 or Thor

William Hurt, who played Gen. Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross in The Incredible Hulk, the man who desperately wanted to hunt down and stop Edward Norton’s big green alter, spoke to some media folk for his role in The Yellow Handkerchief yesterday. In the roundtable interview he was asked about the future of his character General Ross for the in-development films at Marvel Studios.

As for appearances in either Iron Man 2 or Thor, he said he wasn’t contacted but that if Marvel called him up about it, he’d certainly answer. There’s not too much of a surprise here since his character is unnecessary for the story of those two character films, but I’d expect to see him perhaps in some way, shape or form in the future since we know Hulk will be a part of The Avengers.

But what about that buzz-worthy scene in The Incredible Hulk where Tony Stark made a special appearance, referring to The Avengers? If you don’t remember this, here’s that clip:

After the great success of Iron Man to kick off not only the summer of 2008, but of Marvel Studios’ future plans, they wanted desperately to tie that in somehow with their second movie that summer in The Incredible Hulk. For fans, this scene set up the future for which we all now know has become plans of several films leading up to The Avengers – a movie that will bring all of these superheroes together at last.

What was interesting about that scene is that 1) Jon Favreau had absolutely no involvement, and 2) It was made up on the spot. Here’s what William Hurt had to say about the Tony Stark cameo:

“We improv’d that.  The entire scene had no lines written down. We did improv for that entire scene. We actually both had more of a script because of that and a feeling of more invention because of that.  So we could actually go, ‘okay, who do I think my character is…what would he say next. I haven’t a clue, let’s have a shot at it.”

It’s amazing to think they did that themselves based purely on what they know and feel about the characters they portray on screen. I think they nailed it and you wouldn’t think it was improv while watching it in theaters.

Ever since this occurrence, rumors have run rampant about what this could mean for the roster of The Avengers and which characters could appear in each others’ solo character movies. Would Ed Norton cameo in Iron Man 2 to repay the favor? Did this mean that Hulk would have to be a part of the “team” with Captain America, Thor and Iron Man?

While I thought it was a very likely possibility to see Norton appear in Iron Man 2, confirming his involvement in Marvel’s future plans, Jon Favreau revealed a reason for why we wouldn’t be seeing him. That reason is that Iron Man 2 was taking place in the timeline before The Incredible Hulk. That’s an easy way to rule out why both General Ross and Bruce Banner would have no involvement.

It’s easy to assume we won’t be seeing them in Thor either but could we see several major cameos in some extra scene in The First Avenger: Captain America? I hope so.

What cameo appearances by your favorite characters would you like to see and what do you expect to see from the next Marvel movies?

  1. The Hulk would have to be invole in some way in the Captain America movie, since both of them are product of the Super soldier project.

  2. I really wanted a Hulk cameo in Iron Man 2, but maybe there will be another cameo like Nick Fury's in it. I honestly just want to see more ties between these movies leading up to the Avengers and then after that I want to continue seeing how all these characters are still tied together. Honestly, they could make a Hulk 2 with the Avengers chasing after him and another villain rises up…kind of like the military chasing after him and then Abomination shows up.

  3. I hope that there are some cameos in Thor. I understand the time-line thing. I just don't want “The First Avenger: Captain America” to be the only one that has cameos. If Thor and Iron Man 2 don't have compelling cameos, then I think it kind of loses momentum toward the Avengers film. I know the films come first and that each need to stand alone, but I think an important part is making sure they all feel connected. Hulk and Iron Man 2 did a good job. I am sure that Thor and Iron Man 2 will as well, just not in the way we expect.

  4. After they finished rapping up filming for Iron Man 2, they turned around months later to film some more or add in scenes so we will definitely have some cool surprises in Iron Man 2. Thor is still filming and I'm sure their will be all kinds of easter eggs and candy in Thor, especially the fact that more than likely Tony Stark appears in Thor. I'm mostly interested in seeing who will play as Hank Pym because he is so important to the Avengers and his tie in with the Thor movie would make the most sense since he's a scientist that deals with sub-atomic particles and such and the possibility of extra dimensions. Many people don't like Hank Pym but he's too important to leave out especially being that him and Janet Van Dyne are founding members of the Avengers. As far as General Ross is concerned, we will see him again in the Avengers I'm sure but it'd make sense to have him somehow personally know Jim Rhodes too being that they are both prominent figures in the military. Although they said Hawkeye may be in Thor, it would have made the most sense for him to appear in Iron Man 2 especially since Black Widow is in it, but no one actually said that Hawkeye isn't in Iron Man 2. I guess we'll have to just wait and see.

  5. Norton mike get a cameo in IM2 and possibly in Thor, Ross should wait till the Avengers.

He could possibly as a nuisance of the movie, due to his obsession to try to catch or kill the Hulk.

  6. I totally agree with that, non of us fanboys really know who will be in Iron Man 2. Norton could still possibly be in it and they're just keeping it hush hush. Yeah and that also makes sense about Ross being a nuisance in Avengers. While the Avengers somewhat start to get the Hulk to cooperate, Ross gets in the way and agitates things messing everything up. Further more, Ross meeting with Captain America is ESSENTIAL because he'd know his origin's and possibly know him somewhat personally. The results of Ross meting with Cap is a good sub-story within itself.

  7. Well speaking of Ross and Steve Rogers, it is possible that G.T.Ross could end up in TA Captain America too! Ross finds out about Cap being found at the end and tries to interfere with obtaining Cap because he wants him, but S.H.I.E.L.D gets Cap.And in the Avengers Ross Tries to persuade Cap to work with him to get blood samples to create an army of super soldiers but Nick Fury gets in between it and stops Ross in his tracks.

  8. Ross coming in at the end of TFA Captain America makes total sense. He'd say “That man's whole body is government property” sort like he said about the Hulk but Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D would have higher jurisdiction over Ross and foils his plan and apprehend Captain America themselves angering Ross making him try to go after the Hulk again. Ross becomes bent over either capturing the hulk or getting Cap on his side or both.

  9. i just thought of a fantastic way to use the hulk.. since the Incredible hulk left us with the assumption banners getting control.. throw in a -but- to the equation. but his controlled hulk is like half as strong. have him maybe aid the avengers in the beggining, but not part of the team. But

.. and this is assuming whoever they put the avengers up against is like epic-ly badass..

have an epic final battle where banner chooses to lose control (and possibly himself) to bring out ole smashy.. epic final fight, when its over something is wrong, Hulks passed out, but hes still hulk…

leads into avengers 2, where hulk is an antogonist as well

  10. where is ant-mat!

  11. I don't think that Norton is in IM 2. Considering the time-line. JF said that IM 2 takes place before Incredible Hulk. That is his way of telling a story that doesn't feature Banner and Stark crossing paths yet. Banner is still in South America somewhere during IM 2.

  12. Ant Man, that's a good question. Their's been a lot of talk about and articles on him but their doesn't seem to be much movement. Edgar Wright is suppose to be back on script duties for a movie but without a script, a production budget etc. etc, I don't see a cameo on the horizon. Mr. Wright of course has been busy with “Scott Pilgrim vs The World,” and of course was responsible for “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.” So the potential for something interesting is there. At least something is being done. Perhaps Ol' Cap will need a consulting scientist brought in for his thaw at the end of “First Avenger?”

  13. All they hav to do is use the “Daily Bugle” in any way they want. There they could mention the Fantastic 4, Spider-man, Hulk, Dare-Devil. Or all of the above you just need a few copies laying around. I mean seriously. 2 Fantastic Four movies, 1 Dare-Devil movie, 3 Spider-man movies, 1 Ironman movie, 3 X-men, And 2 Hulk movies. The only mention of New York's biggest news paper, Spider-man. Fantastic Four, Dare-Devil, And the last Hulk movie all were either in or ended in New York. Really now would a news paper box really killed anybody? ?? ?

  14. Yeah your right,I did hear that. Oh well…

  15. Unfortunately the “Daily Bugle” is in Sony's hands. Fantastic 4, X-Men, and Daredevil are unfortunately still with Fox but fortunately Hulk is now a Marvel property.

  16. Were you there?

  17. I mention this in the article btw ;)

  18. I think Ant-Man will absolutely be a part of The Avengers. When you think about it, it doesn't make sense for him not to be there with them developing the movie. Why keep it entirely stand-alone when the universe is shared and can only help it?

More cameos and cross-overs the better and I hope we get lots in Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America.

  19. Amen, my brother.

  20. those reshoots were just pick up shots of scenes they already shot.
they didnt shoot any extra super secret stuff.

  21. I know we'll see Black Widow in Iron Man 2, and I'm assuming we'll see Nick Fury too (you can spot him briefly in the IM2 trailer), but there has to be some other cameo. I'm guessing they're trying to pull one over on us. There's going to be something big that none of us expect… I hope. Also I'd expect to see Bruce Banner or Hulk in Captain America, even if it's just a small mention of him.

And hopefully we can get some cameos from Mr. Stan Lee as well.
