Megan Fox Cast as April ONeil Megan Fox Cast as April ONeil in Michael Bays Ninja Turtles Reboot

Megan Fox became something of a household name after playing Mikaela Banes in Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Unfortunately, she had a very public falling out with director Michael Bay and was immediatey replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Well, it looks like the two have finally made up, because Megan Fox has been cast as April O’Neil in the Bay-produced Ninja Turtles reboot.

Michael Bay made the casting announcement on his blog, saying simply:

TMNT: we are bringing Megan Fox back into the family!

Michael Bay

Let no one say that Michael Bay doesn’t have a way with words.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has laid out the details of the reconciliation between Michael Bay and Megan Fox and confirmed that Fox will be playing April O’Neil, the tough-as-nails redheaded reporter and best female pal to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Apparently, director Jonathan Liebesman won Fox over with his awesome storyboards, which probably means she didn’t join the cast because of the screenplay’s complex character development.

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not TMNT fans embrace – or reject – Fox being cast as April O’Neil, especially after the very negative reaction to the leaked script (which Bay claimed was merely an early, terrible draft). She’s certainly not the first actress who springs to mind when thinking about the April O’Neil of the comic books, the cartoons, or the original movie series, and not just because she’s a brunette either. Is Fox’s casting further confirmation that Ninja Turtles will be a major creative departure from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of yore?

Last we heard, the titular turtles would be aliens instead of mutants, and the antagonists would be a covert military group led by Colonel Shredder. There’s no telling if that’s what we’ll end up seeing when Ninja Turtles finally reaches theaters, but you can probably expect a certain “Bay”-ification of the source material if Fox as April O’Neil is any indication.

In other Ninja Turtles news, the filmmakers are apparently testing actors for the roles of the Ninja Turtles (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael), who will be motion-captured for the big screen. There’s no word on precisely who was tested, but according to THR, they’re “mostly relative unknowns” – which I suppose leaves room for all the Corey Feldman fans out there who are hoping for his return as Donatello.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Are you happy with the decision to cast Megan Fox as April O’Neil? Drop us a line in the comments.

Ninja Turtles is expected to hit theaters on May 16th, 2014.

  1. It’s as though they are trying to make the most horrible “Ninja Turtles” movie imaginable.

    • Michael Bay saw the bottom of the barrel…It wasn’t deep enough.

  2. *Pulls out a revolver* Anyone else up for a game of Russian Roullette?

  3. Fanboys make me sick sometimes

    • …says Norrin Radd.

  4. It must be April Oneil the porn star right?

    • it’s weird, i wouldn’t have a problem with that.

  5. BOOO!!!!! The first actress that comes to mind is Amy Adams. TMNT is a dorky fun show & she would do a great job at both dorky & serious.

  6. Aahhhh what the hell….ill give her a shot….she might actually be good….she has some talent but hasnt been given the ability to show it….

  7. The concept of aliens instead of mutants, is to give a more “credible” realistic focus to The story. I like it and also like the selection of Megan for the role….

    • I’m sorry how do either of the words: alien or mutant, summon the words credible or realistic in any thought process?

    • You have no idea what you’re talking about do you?

    • Oh yeah cause aliens that look like mutant turtles are much more believable than mutant turtles….well maybe to those with horrible imagination and want to piggy back off a per-established franchise by adding mediocre action effects and agonizingly not funny potty humor and dodge any criticism…say like…..
      michael bay?

    • Yeah, I think they would work as aliens. They look like turtles so the humans (April, Casey, etc.) will refer to them as turtles. With a little CGI tweaking of their physiology, it can be done. Not sure how they’ll explain Master Splinter, whi is is obviosly a talkin rat!

BTW, I’d give Jennifer a chance to. She might surprise us all in the role. Especially itf thei are going in a radically new direction with this. It’ll probably be something like Warriors of Vitue ( Anyone remember that little flick?

      • I actually saw that movie when it came out..what a bomb. It’s funny you mentioned that, since that was exactly the thought I had when I heard ‘alien mutant ninja turtle’. I just hope my kids won’t want me to watch this one with them. Yuck.

      • Whose Jennifer?

  8. Movie’s officially s*** now!

  9. Omg no. Do you think Nolan would use Fox? NO. This movie is now officially s***.

    • (When did Nolan become the subject of “What would Jesus do”-type phrases?)

      • When he made the dark knight.

        • You mean when he made three movies about an emo whiner who dressed himself up as Batman and pretended to know how to act?

        • @ Nick

          Very true.

        • When anything that needs or is purposed to be made ‘real’ just because. It is then Nolanized.

      • @ Kenji

        Lol, good question aint it.

  10. Michael Bay is really butchering the Ninja Turtles, I can already see it being a complete failure. It’s a shame, they could’ve done something truly amazing with this franchise.

  11. Tbh, let them do what they want with TMNT. If they want to destory the story more than what Bay has already done now, so be it. Nothing will ever come close to beating the original live action movie.

Like Jurassic Park being re-released in theaters, they should do the same with the original TMNT movie.

  12. These two lames bay and fox are content on ruining my childhood favs.

  13. Like anyone needed more confirmation that this movie will be sh*t…

  14. Well, this is obscene. Not just because of the tone implications, but because of the gleeful “Yeah, we’re casting someone who can’t act” air.

  15. Now we need Shia LaBeouf as Casey Jones and we have an official Michael Bay movie.

    1. Aliens from another planet
    2. Shia LaBeouf
    3. Megan Fox

The any Michael Bay movie can be made using these guidelines.

    • Shia as Casey Jones. Excellent idea sir.

  16. LMAO! Man, Megan must have spent hours on her knee’s to get this role.

Simple reaction to this, It’s obvious whos going to win opening weekend

    Godzilla >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ninja Turtle’s.

  17. Wasn’t April O’Neal supposed to be an intelligent journalist? I don’t think whatshername can pull that off.

But it was going to be sh*t as soon as Michael Bay took it on.

  18. I think it could be interesting. I do love how many people are slating the movie and saying Bay has ruined the franchise BEFORE EVEN SEEING THE MOVIE. Didn’t anyone learn theor lesson with Dark Knight? By that I mean look at all the s*** and complaints they got hen they annouced Heath Ledger would play The Joker, and they proved everyone wrong. No one has seen this movie, no one knows if its going to fail or not. So wait and see. And as for the Turtles being Aliens, they are not. The alien based origin Bay spoke of is about the fact that Aliens, i.e Krang inadvertantly create the turtles. It doesn’t mean the Turtles themselves are alien.

    • Am I the only one who can’t remember “all the s*** and complaints” from when Ledger was cast as the Joker? I for one remember people greeting the news with a general “meh.”

      • You mean the “Broke Back Joker” comments?

  19. Lattest menu addition at The Dresden, A Bay sandwitch with a side of Turtle soup. Reportedly goes down good with a glass of Sly Fox wine…

  20. In the comics, the ooze that transforms the turtles, Splinter, and Leatherhead is a byproduct of experiments created by a straded alien race known as the Utroms. This is also shown in the 2003 animated series. So technically, the turtles origin is based on an aliens but to make them aliens themselves is dumb.

  21. “who will be motion-captured for the big screen”

  22. Megan Fox and TMNT should kept at Bay from each other at all times.

    • I see what you did there.

  23. Crap. Couldn’t they have cast a real redhead?

BTW, i guess Steven Spielberg is not producing this movie. He was the reason behind firing Megan Fox for Transformers 3.

  24. I’m done. I’m just done with Michael Bay’s poop fest of movies.

The reason Megan Fox wasn’t in Transformers 3, was because she was sick and tired of Bay’s crap.

    Now she wants back in?

    Screw you Michael Bay.

  25. Megan Fox as April, lol. That’s cute & funny of Bay. Wouldn’t be surprised if Shia turns out to be Casey Jones later on. Bad enough Bay ruining Transformers but TMNT franchise too? sheesh

    • How did he ruin the Transformers series? What are you talking about?

  27. Well… that’s it, isn’t it? If there was any shred of hope left that this could be the TMNT movie that fans like me have been waiting for, it’s just been destroyed :(
    It just keeps getting worse.

    • Anyone else think that Emily Bett Rickards, who plays Felicity Smoak on ‘Arrow’, would make a great April O’Neal?

  28. I was 8 years old when the first live action “TEENAGE MUTANT ninja turtles” came out and thought it was fan-freaking-tastic. I’m 31 now and hoping I’ll be just as oblivious as to how bad this will be too. God I miss eight year old me.

    • @ Paul

My eyes grew big seeing the turtles in live-action at that age as im 31 aswell. loved the cartoon & got my hands on as many of the toys as i could. I still enjoy it till this day.

  29. I didn’t think there was any way possible that this movie could be made any worse, but Bay has found a way to do it.
