Arrow star Stephen Amell just spent the majority of a rollercoaster third season wrestling his duties protecting Starling City as a masked crime fighter with a “normal” life as Oliver Queen. That identity struggle culminated in an epic season finale that will have huge repercussions for the future of Ollie and the rest of Team Arrow moving forward. Chief among them: the promise from showrunner Mark Guggenheim that season four will have a lighter tone, and a statement from Amell himself promising he was done with the ‘Arrow’ persona.
That doesn’t mean he’s finished playing comic book heroes, having signed on to play Casey Jones, the rough-and-tumble street vigilante with a heart of gold in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Producer Michael Bay – released an official look at Amell dressed in the familiar hockey mask, and now a slew of new images have surfaced from the sequel’s set, providing more great looks at Amell in costume as well as some more TMNT characters.
These new behind-the-scenes images (via CBM) appear to offer a clearer look at the first meeting of Casey Jones, Megan Fox’s April O’ Neil, and the Turtles themselves. Judging by Raphael’s sai embedded in a street sign, it seems to be an intense one. Amell appears ready to tear into the film’s heroes – until a frazzled O’Neil steps in, palms outstretched, to break it up. Also glimpsed in the photos is Will Arnett’s character Vern on a date with Alessandra Ambrosio (playing an unspecified role).
While Amell’s TMNT 2 mask does look formidable and pretty faithful to the character – the buzzcut, jeans, work boots, hoodie, and light jacket aren’t too far removed from what Oliver Queen would normally sport when he isn’t out shooting arrows into Starling City criminals (in most iterations, Jones usually leans toward dingy sweats and jean vests or tattered sweatshirts). We’ve seen Amell explore a few dimensions on Arrow over the years, from dark and brooding to lighthearted and romantic, but rarely an aggressive, borderline crazed loose cannon. It will be interesting to see if screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have written that aspect into this universe’s Casey (and whether Amell can pull it off).
Despite Amell not quite embodying the look of the comic book Casey Jones – or even the version of the character who appeared on the smash hit animated series of the late ’80s/early ’90s, – TMNT fans should take heart, because the sequel is jam-packed with favorites from franchise lore. Tyler Perry is on board as scientist Baxter Stockman; The Shredder is back, this time played by Brian Tee; classic Turtle baddies Bebop and Rocksteady are in the film; and even the evil talking brain Krang – yes, Krang – is rumored to make an appearance.
TMNT 2 will be in theaters on June 3rd, 2016
