A film about DC hero Nightwing was announced just a few days ago, and already the enthusiasm and anticipation is enormous. Nightwing is the hero name taken on by Dick Grayson, who started his hero career as the first Robin to fight alongside Batman. Grayson, who became the ward of Bruce Wayne after his parents were murdered, grew up fighting alongside his adoptive father in Gotham City. A former circus acrobat, his physical abilities and endurance are formidable. As he got older, Grayson decided to give up being Robin and became Nightwing — no longer a sidekick but a hero in his own right.
It took virtually no time for actors to be suggested, or even suggest themselves for the title role. Earlier fan art has suggested Oscar nominee Dev Patel (Lion) or Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries) for the role, and Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) very much wants to play the part. In terms of Dick Grayson’s appearance, the character is rather young. With all that in mind, new fan art has emerged recently, suggesting two young men to take on the mantle of Nightwing.
For his part, Bosslogic has posted a picture showing Zac Efron (Neighbors) as Nightwing. His upcoming role in Baywatch shows that he certainly has the body for the athletic role. And Instagram user aikoaiham showed of his own fan art, of Steve Yeun (The Walking Dead) as the hero. Yeun’s TWD character Glenn is of course no more, so his schedule is certainly clear enough to star in a feature film.
Yeun has been suggested by fans for the role before. He’s a talented enough actor, and several years of running from walkers has also made him very physically fit. There have also been several previous casting choices in comic book movies and television which focus on adding more diversity, such as Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm in Fantastic 4 and Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen on Supergirl. So Yeun is very much in the running — as much as anyone else being suggested at such an early stage in the process.
The actual announcement of who is playing Nightwing is most likely still well in the future. The only name currently mentioned in any official capacity is director Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) who is in talks to direct Nightwing. As such, it will take awhile before an actor is cast in the role, so we can look forward to plenty more fan art suggestions in the meantime.
