The final box office figures are in for this past weekend and they show that Platinum Dune’s A Nightmare On Elm Street remake grossed $32.9 million in its first three days of release – that’s just about enough to cover production costs on the new Freddy Krueger flick.

Needless to say, Warner Bros. is already looking to develop a sequel that would see Jackie Earle Haley back as the metal-clawed Krueger – and yes, there’s a good chance his next killing spree will be in 3D.

You might recall that Nightmare On Elm Street producer Brad Fuller was hesitant last week to start talking up a sequel – especially given the recent death of his Friday the 13th: Part 2 3D project.  Now that his new horror remake is a hit, however, it’d probably be a safe bet to assume that Fuller will be onboard for another venture down Elm Street.

Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman certainly is, having already announced that – although there is neither a story nor the beginning of a script for A Nightmare On Elm Street 2“[the Nightmare On Elm Street opening weekend] is the largest horror opening in the April-May corridor, and it just proves there’s a lot left in the franchise.”

It looks like Nancy and Co. won't be living the quiet life anytime soon.

For now, Nightmare On Elm Street scribes Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer – who will also pen the upcoming Final Destination 5 – seem all but set to pen the sequel as well.  Director Samuel Bayer – who made his feature-length directorial debut with the remake – has in the past claimed that would not be back for another outing with Freddy Krueger.  Of course, as he admitted to Dread Central last week, “Don’t rule me out just yet if there is a sequel.  You never know how things work out. I’d love to do it again.”

So at last we come to the million dollar question – will A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 be in 3D?

Well, producer Brad Fuller has already spoken on this matter and has insisted that he believes “3D movies have to be designed and written as such… I don’t want to shoehorn the story just so we can use 3D technology.  I do really think [a Nightmare On Elm Street] movie and the visual style would work well within a 3D environment, though, so you never know.”

Hopefully, a 3D 'Nightmare On Elm Street' sequel would look better than this.

Of course there is one other question – do fans want to see A Nightmare On Elm Street 2?

The Nightmare On Elm Street reviews seems to be mixed at best – you can read our review HERE – as the flick has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of only 16% and an IMDB average around 6.1, currently.  The biggest issue that a lot of moviegoers seem to have with the film is that it’s simply unoriginal, unimaginative, and lacks the charm of previous Freddy Krueger films.

But what do you think?  Are you psyched for the Nightmare On Elm Street sequel?  Do you think the 3D factor could solve some of the problems that the remake suffered from?

We’ll keep you posted on the progress of A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 as more information comes in.

  1. Honestly, a nightmare on elm street must be made soon. People are starting to forget about him and his new image that was brought to theaters four years ago. When I first saw a nightmare on elm street (2010), I had no idea there was an old version. I started to read reviews about the old version. Most if the reviews were saying that all movies in the series were wonderful and that is when I decided to watch them. Now, I have only seen the firs two movies and I have to say the second was s***. The first was a little better than the second but it was still s***. If somebody is going to make a sequel to the new version of a nightmare on elm street, they better not make it about the same plot of the second. I would like to see Rooney Mara as Nancy again in a nightmare on elm street 2. Does anybody else agree with me about a nightmare on elm street 2?

    • I would love to see a sequel to a Nightmare On Elm Street but it has to have Rooney Mara who brought such energy to the first film.

      • I would love to see nightmare on elm street in 3d I love watching that movie since I was a kid and making it in a 3d would be even more scary then even like it coming after you

    • I totally agree even though i will always be a fan of the old ones. This remake was better by far

    • If you ask me the new Freddy Kruger lacked all the pizzazz, humor and personality of the original…he acted like a dead fish. That being said, the more these remake try to “humanize” these villains, the more they dispel the mystery of their power..and hence any reason to fear them. I’m far less fearful of some guy who is attacking me because of some emotional issues he had growing up as a child than the guy who is attacking me because that’s just what he does, and he takes his job seriously. Stop humanizing villians, you rob them of their power.

  2. hey bud i agree WITH YA ON THE FACT THAT , IF THEY MAKE a sequel it should be a new story and they most definly should bring nancy back in the sequel ,
but i disagree ya calling the original nightmare 2 s*** as i loved it and i think its the darkest of the old nightmare movies and they shoul;d have connected part 2 to apart 3 some how :) so lets hope they make a sequel soon :)

    • Do you think they are going to make a sequel because it. Has been 4 years and Rooney Mara ( the actress who played Nncy) is in the movie series the girl with the dragon tattoo and they still have two more movie to go before they finish the series.

  3. They can’t have nancy in number two she comes back in the third and Quintan wasn’t suppose to live.

  4. You can’t wreck the story line just because some people didn’t like the second original nightmare.

  5. You’re all missing the point, especially those who can’t appreciate the original series for the ground it has broke. Fans do not simply want a rehash of what has been done before, they want something to breath new life into the franchise. This was the problem with the remake (among many other things, over produced, bad directing, terrible editing, a weak script, a vapid cast, the list goes on). let’s forget the 2010 remake ever happened and start anew, preferably as far away from platinum dunes as possible, and most importantly, with the demon back in Freddy,

  6. Truthfully, I have no desire to see a sequel to the remake. The remake changes the original story of Freddy a bit too much for my liking. I think it would be awesome for them to add on to the old series. I’ve had an idea of a woman who’s first child was killed while Freddy was alive, but still helped burn Freddy alive. After her husbands tragic death she moves away, where Freddy can not go haunt the daughter’s dreams that will be born. Eventually the daughter would grow up and have a kid of her own. Than on a road trip with friends she drives through Springwood. Triggering the nightmares caused by her grandmother burning Freddy alive, and causes her friends to have the dreams too.

I think about ways the old series could continue now because truthfully, the remake sucked.

  7. There was only one perrson who could play Freddie Kruger and that was Robert englund

    • I very much agree. There is only one Freddy and that is Robert! I fell asleep watching the remake and then watched it a second time and I still can’t remember it all that well. Wish New Line would pick it up the series again.

  8. I think we should all need to agree the new movies r nothing like the older ones but yet we r not in the 80 anymore … I liked the 2010 nightmare on elm street movie I hope they make a new one it’s only been 4 yrs I think they should bring back the same people (Nancy and her man ) even if in the 80 he’s dead n nancy comes back in 3 this is a new time n a new movie the first was a good remake but part 2 let’s change it up alil in stead of just a remake add to it . Producers have so much more to work with n more they can do with a movie just give it a chance .. I want the older movies with a new twist not the movies that r now out. Does anyone agree with me??!

  9. The 2010 was awesome
They brought out more fear and less jokes.
It totally redeemed the nightmare on elm street for me

  10. I will say i liked the nightmare on elm street remake they did, but it will never replace the old freddy movies. I say if your going to do a sequel at least get Fredrick Charles to play freddy to me he was the best krueger and always will be no matter how many of these remakes you do. I loved the nightmare on elm street movies and always hoped they would remake them more to our time with the technology we have could you imagine those graphics and the stuff we could recreate it would be awesome. I would love to see another nightmare on elm street but i would rather have Fredrick Charles play Freddy i can’t picture Freddy Krueger in any other way and was a little disappointed when i watch the nightmare on elm street had changed Freddy. It was still a good movie just disappointed in the Freddy Krueger character.

    • Sorry that was suppose to say Robert Englund not Fredrick charles i don’t even know what i was typing geeze Robert Englund needs to play Freddy Krueger he is all i can picture as the character.
