After purchasing the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise back in 2009 and announcing plans  to create a new CGI cartoon series last year – Nickelodeon has finally released a premiere date for the highly-anticipated animated TV reboot. Season 1 kicks off Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. with a one-hour special event; the entire season will consist of 26 half-hour episodes.

Check out the new trailer for Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles above (and please note the awesome use of the 90s theme song!).

For those unfamiliar franchise, TMNT follows a group of four baby pet turtles that are tossed in to the sewer where they are exposed to toxic waste that mutates them into 5-foot anthropomorphic ninja crime fighters. Trained by their human-size rat mentor, Splinter, the turtles – along with their friend, intrepid human reporter April O’Neill – battle the evil forces of The Shredder and his criminal organization known as the Foot Clan.

Unlike the considerably criticized (and recently shut down) Michael Bay movie reboot, The Nickelodeon version will remain truer to the much-beloved ’90s cartoon, with the exception of a few cosmetic changes. In the official network release, Nickelodeon had this to say about the upcoming TMNT cartoon:

“[TMNT will be] Funnier and with more Ninjutsu than ever before, the show will explore the companionship of four teenage brothers learning to rely on themselves and one another as they unravel the mystery of their existence and grow to become the heroes in a half-shell that they are destined to be.”

Along with the trailer, Nick has also released details on the star-studded voice cast for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

  • Jason Biggs (American Pie) as Leonardo
  • Sean Astin (Lord Of The Rings) as Raphael
  • Greg Cipes (Teen Titan) as Michelangelo
  • And from the original Ninja Turtles series, Rob Paulsen as Donatello.

Joining the core team is Avatar the Last Airbender‘s Mae Whitman as April O’Neil, Hoon Lee (Royal Pains) as Master Splinter, Phil LaMarr (Justice League) as Baxter Stockman and finally Kevin Michael Richardson (Penguins of Madagascar) as the villainous Shredder.

It may just be the nostalgia talking, but it’s kind of exciting to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back on television with its trademark ’90s origin. Sure, the idea of giant mutant crime-fighting turtles is a weird one – but as a kid it seemed to make total sense.  Although this new this new series will mostly be geared towards children, it still might be easier for adult fans to choke down than the alien origin story Michael Bay is pushing for with his movie reboot of the franchise.

  1. It’s like looking at a PS2 game.

    • Yeah it does, but looks like it could be good

      • I read and whached sneak peak the turtles are 15 if april was older it wouldn’t make since

  2. anyone else notice how April looks more like a cutesy teenager damsel-in-distress rather than a news reporter? … granted it’s been several years since i’ve seen the 90s show (not since the DVDs first came out) but i don’t remember her being that young looking.

anyway, i’ll be checking this out in september and still holding out hope they fix the movie.

  3. Those characters look like lego’s that have melted together.
I dunno, nothing about this show looks appealing. The character designs, animation, childish-looking story, etc.

I just wish they’d re-release the 2003 ‘TMNT’ series (as a Blu-Ray box set or something)… that was one of my all-time favorite animation shows.

  4. I would have thought Biggs would be Michelangelo and Astin would be leonardo

  5. Lame, lame, lame.

Stop trying to reboot the franchise, the best possible thing Nickelodeon could do is just re-run episodes of the ACTUAL show and expose kids to quality programming rather than this rehashed garbage.

April O’Neal as a teen?! Turtles look lame, since when do Don and Mike have “blades” coming out of their respective weapons? Splinter looks IMPOSING!? Please, that totally defeats the point.

Shredder is literally the ONLY character who looks halfway decent and the voice actors are probably the only molecule of goodness about this entire show.

Way to go, clueless executives, you have another amazing flop on your hands. Take it from the Thundercats, how did that work out?

    • You don’t like the new Thundercats?

  6. this show looks lame its a joke it would be better if it was cartoonnetwork or disneyxd its just stupid graphics from a ps2 game they should make a new live action movie not a new show this is just pathetic

  7. Are we sure this isn’t a video game?? That CG is crap!!

  8. “booyakasha”?

    Toitles is dead, snort.

  9. This show’s for kids. I’ll give it a shot, but I have high hopes. I won’t crap on it if I don’t like it either.

  10. Yeah I agree the CG on this isn’t blowing any minds – but at the very least I say it’s worth a few episode shot to prove itself. I remember people said the same thing about the new ‘Green Lantern’ cartoon on Cartoon Network, but despite all the shade thrown it turned out to be a pretty good show.

As for April, I can’t fully co-sign on her teenybopper, I <3 Beiber look, but again when it all boils down to it any cartoon that’s airs @ 11am really isn’t for adults.

While I personally am not super crazy about reboots I do like the idea of reviving things for a younger generation to enjoy. It breaks my poor heart to mention ‘Darkwing Duck’ or ‘Samurai Pizza Cats’ and my friends kids are like “umm who?”

    • My fondest tv moments are with Darkwing Duck, no one has any idea who that was nowadays, I wonder if in 10-15 years shows like that wil be referenced in parody-shows like Robot Chicken with people like us as the target audience ^^!

      • And doesn’t people’s lack of ‘Darkwing Duck’ knowledge make ya crazy? I wanna duct tape them to a couch and pop in the DVDs on a 24 hour loop.

I say let the young kids have this new TMNT show. I will watch it and silently judge.

    • Anybody remember Bravestarr?

  11. It does have a very 90’s feeling to it and what’s wrong with the animation? I was actually afraid of that kind of static full on 3D-look most shows have, this one looks to combine a kind of shell shading with real cartoon elements, it appeals to me at least.. :) in any case it looks better than most kid shows on tv ^^

    “Kowabunga!!” … i mean: “Booyakasha!!”

  12. Not really crazy about the animation but I will still give the show a shot. Think like it is an old video game. Graphics may not be the best but given it’s good you can get past that. Here’s hoping the new Turtles show is good.

  13. My brothers love the TMNT! But why would they air it at 11 am when most children are in school?!?!

    • Oops I must have skipped the part where it said Saturday lol my bad

  14. We might have considered seeing ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’, but after Jason Biggs recent obscene and disrespectful comments – it ain’t going to happen.

Let’s hope Viacom wakes up and never hires that disgusting Jason Biggs again.

  15. Done with Nickelodeon and all their advertisers until they give the boot to Jason Biggs.

  16. I just read the tweet that Jason Biggs tweeted about sexually assaulting Janna Ryan. He has made anti-woman and anti-Christian comments. Is this the kind of employee that Viacom hires? Until he is removed from Viacom’s employment and from the TMNT show, we will not be watching. My children will certainly not watch this hateful bigot or buy any TMNT merchandise. I will be sure to tell all of my friends, especially those with children to steer clear of Nickelodeon and its parent company Viacom until this is rectified. All Viacom shows will be blocked until a public apology is made by Viacom and Jason Biggs is fired! I am sending a copy of this email to all my friends as we speak. If Viacom wants to allow this intolerent, misogynistic, Christian-hating bigot to keep his job then you lose my viewership forever.

  17. I will not be allowing my children to watch any of the Nickelodeon channels as long as Jason Biggs remains employed by them. My children do not need to exposed to someone who would spew such filth and then have it promoted to children for their viewing. I have blocked all Nick channels, contacted Viacom and will be contacting advertising sponsors. I will also tell all of my friends and family so they will know as well what Nickelodeon and Viacom are condoning by continuing to employ this person.

  18. Lol sounds wierd when you say it HA BOOYAKASHA!

  19. Its not appropriate Jason Biggs to be in a kids show TMNT on a kids network Nickelodeon after his vile misogynist tweets.

We are campaigning to get Jason Biggs fired and kept away from all kids shows.
