HBO Renews ‘The Newsroom’ for Season 3

Aside from The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin isn’t exactly known for his hit television shows. The critically acclaimed writer and producer – who won an Academy Award for his work on David Fincher’s The Social Network – was behind two short-lived series in Sports Night and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Both series were beloved by critics and developed a cult following but still faced the network chopping block. So fans were understandably hesitant to let themselves fall in love with Sorkin’s latest project, HBO’s The Newsroom.

That series provides an inside look at the world of television journalism and centers on anchorman Will McAvoy, played by Jeff Daniels. Since its debut last summer, The Newsroom has steadily gained a following and snagged a few high-profile awards nominations to boot. Following up on this success, the show was renewed for a second season, and now comes an even greater indication that The Newsroom isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

HBO has announced that The Newsroom has been renewed for season 3. This news follows up on a recent message from Daniels – via his Twitter account –  in which the actor beat the network to an update on the show’s fate.

It’s official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3.

The series’ ratings have seen an increase since season 2 started this summer. So The Newsroom‘s return isn’t necessarily a surprising one but certainly a welcome turn of events for its burgeoning fanbase. It also marks something of a show of good faith from HBO. Given the pedigree The Newsroom has with Sorkin and the ensemble cast led by Daniels, there’s no reason that the show can’t proudly sit alongside other current HBO series like Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire.

The network has proven for years that it’s something of a haven for unique and edgy series that might be cancelled prematurely on traditional networks. Perhaps previous Sorkin projects Sports Night and Studio 60 may have lasted on HBO and been spared the fate they suffered on ABC and NBC, respectively. All signs point to the fact that Sorkin may have found a network where his talents can truly have the time and creative freedom to thrive.

  1. Who cares, nobody watches this garbage

    • Dude, Newsroom is actually pretty good despite some annoying sitcom-y elements.

      • I think it’s a good show. I’m glad it will continue next season.

    • You’re being hyperbolic, man. It’s not the greatest show ever created, but it’s not garbage.

  2. I’m excited. This show is one of the smartest and best on air at the moment.

    • Agree 110%.

  3. or not.
The only good thing about Newsroom is Will Macavo, if that’s how it’s spelled. and if it’s not, well, what’s it really matter?

  4. I think the show is great, need to see more of the hustle up with breaking news, the high pace of the first season was a big drawing card for me. Glad to see its been renewed.

  5. I’m wondering if this will cut into his time for “Dumb and Dumber To”

  6. I consider myself pretty middle of the pack and the show is left wing but I dont mind it. Its not the best show ever but I like Daniels, he is strong in the lead, I like Jim, I hate Maggie but I like the show.

And lets be honest, HBO needs to keep anything that is a decent success right now. They lost Entourage, they lost Luck which was a good show, True Blood is done after next year, they cut Hung and How to Make it. Veep and Girls I dont watch but they are decent comedies for them.

But right now its GOT and Boardwalk as their two big shows now that TB is gone after next season. They would be stupid to get rid of Newsroom. So i’m glad they are keeping it. Nothing I hate more than watching a show, getting invested in a show and then having the network crap on me.

Starz just did it twice with Boss and Magic City, two really solid shows they kill after two seasons. HBo has done it with Deadwood and Rome and Carnivale.

    • You are soooo right about Boas and Magic City. I was so mad that I even started watching those two because they cancelled them so quickly.

  7. Awesome news! This is definitely one of my favorite shows at the moment. I hope they can keep it going for several more seasons.

  8. prob the best show on tv beside breaking bad

  9. I hate-watch this show, its so preachy sometimes I pause to argue with myself. But I watched the entire 1st season and so far, most of the 2nd.

  10. only thin i wanna see jeff daniels in is Dumb and Dumber Too. Him spewing his political opinion is as exciting as watching a game of Cricket

  11. Smart series. I really like it!

  12. Love this show :) Makes my Sunday nights that much better ^_^

  13. At least it gives us more opportunity to see the absolutely stunningly gorgeous Olivia Munn on screen.

    • She makes nerds look gooood. 😉

  14. Studio 60 got the shaft.

  15. Too bad the backbone of the show is the McAvoy/Meg (Mac?) relationship, because Meg must be the most annoying character in a TV series in years. Maggie’s a close second.

The most annoying thing is the pace. The actors talk too fast, respond too fast, don’t leave any breathing room between sentences. Probably because the script is about 300 pages, pushed into 50 minutes.
Slow it down, let the actors actually ACT, instead of playing a game of who can deliver their lines as fast as possible.

    • I think most of that is to highlight the fast pace of newscasting live when so many thigs happen quick and people have to make snap decisions. Having to operate that way would be nerve racking to say the least. To slow the pace would lose much of what is attractive about the series in my opinion

    • Don’t you and your friends talk quickly when you’re excited about something, have a tight deadline, or are passionate about the subject at hand? (In other words: welcome to the world of real, intelligent, fast-thinking people… no offense intended.) Also, I worked for the major networks for 15 years, and that’s how we all talked. There’s always closed-captioning to help you…

    • I couldn’t have said it better!! Here’s hoping for better things in S3.

  16. Great news.

We only started getting season 2 this past monday and I loved season 1 so excellent all round.

I’d say it’s one of the best US TV shows that isn’t named 24 or Game Of Thrones. You can keep your crappy Breaking Bad, Dexter, The Walking Dead, True Blood and whatever else you wanna list, this is truly great TV and manages to show how hectic a news network can be as well as showing characters I can actually care about outside of work.

  17. Can’t wait for Season 3, the show stands out against the usual drivel. Season 1 was fierce and was worried it would get cancelled after how season 2 is being played out, but the two-part season finale will kick ass!

  18. Meh. I tried to like this one but I couldn’t get into it.

  19. Overacting is strong with this one.

  20. I ams o glad. I love this show. It is fast-paced and well-written. I am very happy HBO is going to keep the show going

  21. I love this show. Very glad to hear there will at least be a 3rd season. I think its very smart, and I love the dialogue.

  22. Excellent show, not meant for unintelligent folks. Everytime I watch an episode, I end up feeling smarter and justified for not ending as a liberal or conservative. From the annoying characters to the most impressive, all are doing some fine work in acting and I applaud the actors, actresses and the team behind this show. Bravo!

    • I am pleased and excited that it will continue!!!!!

  23. This is great news. I can’t wait to see the third season. As for all the hating, there is only one thing to say… “ITS FICTION PEOPLE, NOT FACT!!!!!”. I can’t stand how people complain about a show that has the courage to stand by it’s convictions, one that doesn’t pretend to be factual, but uses real world events to help establish timelines and support character motivations. Above all thought, The Newsroom is fiction, with news as a backdrop. It is not a factual political statement about how the world is. It’s just fiction. However, fantastically well written. If you want reality, there are many 24 hour news networks at your disposal, not to mention the internet, that cover current events, both domestically and internationally. I for one, in addition to the many, think this show is an absolute hit, and look forward to seeing more.

    • Bravo! Well said!

  24. I love the newsroom. I think it has great characters and I can’t wait for the next episode. the only thing I don’t like about it is I have to wait so long between seasons

  25. One of the best shows, ever! Wonderful dialogue, and fine acting.

  26. I am so happy that The Newsroom is coming back. I am so sick of vampires, zombies and period dramas. This is by far one of the best shows on television right now.

  27. I’m happy it’s coming back. It is definitely one of my favorite programs! It is a great combination of drama with a bit of humor.

  28. So glad that HBO is renewing Newsroom! Well written, with excellent characters/actors, especially Bridges, Waterston & Sadoski. One of the best shows on television… agree with Michael Wilson’s comments 100%. Thank you, Alan Sorkin for such great entertainment, mand well written scripts. The emotions come across perfectly. The finale was perfect! Can’t wait for season three!

  29. Fantastic news. The BEST show on TV. The writing, characters, ans actors make the hour go by like a minute. Cannot wait till it returns!!!
