New Transformers 2 Trailer: Cool With Dashes Of Stupidity

Apr 30, 2009 by

It’s looking like Transformers 2 will up the action factor – but still have idiotic humor.

Well here we go again. I’m fully prepared for a debate on this – but it looks like once again we’re going to be treated to what could be a really cool uber-action flick punctuated by moments of annoying stupidity. I was willing to give Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a chance… I really was. But I see that some of the more moronic aspects of the first film have not been left behind, but have instead latched a ride on Transformers 2 as well.

Before I go on, check out the brand spanking new Transformers 2 trailer yourself:

“What you are about to see is Top Secret. Don’t tell my mother.”

“I feel smarter already. Can you smell it?

Just shoot me.

So we have John Turturro back as the moronic FBI agent, along with the vacuous parents of Shia LeBeouf’s character. Ugh.

I don’t have a problem with Megan Fox in the movie, and I certainly won’t complain about that cheesecake shot in the trailer – although if you’re one of those people making excuses for the retarded humor because “it’s for kids,” juxtapose that against what looks like a shot from a Maxim photo shoot. If you still defend that, it strikes me as disingenuous.

If I could somehow manage to block the dumb crap from my brain, the trailer actually looks pretty intense and awesome. I loved the locations and seeing those Transformers coming up from the depths of the ocean looked pretty intimidating and cool.

The word is that this one will be darker and more intense – that will make the “LOLs” stand out even in more stark contrast than the first. All I can hope is that maybe they decide to get all that out of the way early on and don’t interrupt tense battle and action scenes with a first grader’s one liners.

On the bright side it looks like Michael Bay may have fixed another annoyance from the first film: Unintelligible action scenes. From what is shown above it looks like the camera may actually have been pulled back a bit for a wider angle on the robot battles – it would be nice to actually be able to make out what’s going on during these fight sequences.

You can find HD versions of the trailer over at Yahoo! Movies.

OK. I’m ready. Bring it.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens on June 24th.

  1. I liked the first Transformers movie with it’s humor. I thought Sam and his parents, Bobby Bolivia, Glenn Whitman and even the chihuahua added to the appeal of the movie.

Agent Simmons is suppose to be the annoying, know-it-all, egotist that gets put in his place.

I am tired of hearing that all of these films (comicbook and cartoon to live-action) are for the kids. Transformers and GI Joe (as cartoons) came out when I was a kid. I watched them when I got home from school. I had transformers and GI Joe toys. I am thirty-five now and feel that “thirty-somethings and forty-somethings” are the ones who will have the most connection with these films. Sure todays youth will like them just like I did when I was a child.

If you have watched the special features that came along with the dvd and bluray releases of Transformers, then you would know that this group of people (who are die-hard fans) are directly involved with it’s content and production.

  2. I think that it’s pretty much official the this movie is going to own the summer of 09,and I can’t wait to see it!

I personally don’t mind the “humor”,even though it’s corny.I think that most people that don’t like the humor hate it even more because of the other idiots in the theater laughing like it’s the joke of the year and won’t shut up.In that case,do what I do.Go see it on the first showing of the day on a Saturday or Sunday. You can almost guarantee that most of the teen crowd won’t be there.Although, with a definite blockbuster like this, you never know.

  3. You know, the thing that worries me more than the retarded humor is how many troops they like to show being killed in almost every scene… Like I’ve said before, I seriously doubt soldiers will stand around and try to have a stand-up fight with giant alien robots, but they do here almost just so you can see them get thrown around… And after the movie is all said and done, the death toll would be in the thousands and I bet it will have a light-hearted ending with more stupid jokes…

  4. I’m going to try my hand at some humor…Jeff Foxworthy style…ready?

IF YOU watch this trailer that has insane action, a great story, and Megan Fox in skimpy outfits and you are bothered by two lines of dialogue enough to complain about it, YOU MIGHT BE A GRUMPY OLD MAN!

    :) Had to do it.

  5. I would like to make note that trailers can be misleading. They put scenes and statements together that do not appear that way in the movie. This seems to be the case here.

“What you are about to see is Top Secret. Don’t tell my mother.”
“I feel smarter already. Can you smell it?”

Both sets of statements do not flow smoothly but come across as sentences that are cut and added together to appear as a continuous statement by the character.

  6. KEN J

That has got to be one of the worst arguments I’ve ever heard. Man, now I KNOW you have it out for this movie. All you’ve tried to do is stir up controversy and fights on ever thread regarding this movie. Give it a rest man.

That has got to be one of the worst arguments I’ve ever heard. Man, now I KNOW you have the hots for this movie. All you’ve tried to do is stir up controversy and fights on ever thread regarding this movie. Give it a rest man.

  8. ken j,

not to mention that “joke” he made

  9. ahhaha

Nice one there. Are you in the 3rd grade? Repeating what someone else says? AHAHAH I know you can’t come up with any thing smart to say (3/4 comments on this thread you’ve paraphrased what others have said on this subject), but this is just funny.

  10. The tag team is back

  11. Hm, I guess everything needs to be explained for some of our “slower” audience members (don’t want to discriminate against our mentally challenged)

You see, I was making the point that your rebuttal to my point was completely void of anything substantial. So much so that it can be considered a “generic” response that with the change of only one or two words can be used against someone else without losing its effect. Now, if your argument actually made any clear points, then just by me switching the name and two words, it should have not made any sense to the directed individual. But I think I have proven that it is still relevent despite being directed at someone other than your intended target.

In other words, nice try, give me something good. :-D

  12. You live in your own little world buddy. You’ve proven something to yourself, not to anyone else.

And I don’t know what about my posts you don’t get. I mean according to you, you’re very smart, much smarter than me, so if you don’t understand what I’m saying, then…nevermind

  13. I understand what you’re saying, when did I ever say I didn’t understand what you’re saying? It’s just that what you say has no substance.

  14. is it just me or does anyone else feel they game away way to mutch by showing why the decepticons were after sam.
And as for the humor/characters i wouldn’t mind the humer if it didn’t come from sams parents and that john torato guy (sorry i don’t no that agents name) but i did like the humor from the(not trying to be racist) chubby black guy.
    @ matt k
no i think starscream was just getting kicked but it did kind of look like he got split in 2.

  15. IF you have I have no substance, then you don’t understand what I’m saying.

  16. IF you *think I have no substance, then you don’t understand what I’m saying.

  17. IF you have I have no substance, then you don’t understand what I’m saying.”

Man, you’re right, I have no clue what you just said right there… :-D

  18. Sorry dude, you know I couldn’t let that opportunity go. lol :-D

  19. I wouldn’t mind an interval of humour and action if it made me laugh, or smile, or on the inside even appreciate the way the writers minds must have functioned.

Nower days I can really only watch Transformers while flicking in and out between episodes of Scrubs or something else, actually funny, but since you can’t do that in a cinema I probably wont go.

  20. @ken j
i got to admit that i’ve stirred it up a bit on here… but you have to admit it yourself that everytime they’res a transformers thread you make it your personal mission to stir it up with ogb…your first comment right away was pretty much aimed at ogb, it was similar to what you were fighting with him before. You hate this movie sooo much and you said you weren’t going to watch it either so why bother wasting your time even looking or attacking people in the thread…?

  21. As much as he would like to take creative credit of an argument, he’s not the first nor only person to make those arguments that this is just a movie based on a cartoon, it’s for kids, it’s sci-fi, blah blah blah. That’s basically everyone’s argument.

And for your information, I don’t actually hate the movie, I actually hate the hype for the movie. Undeserved hype motivates me to not watch a movie. Prime example is Pirates of the Carribean. I actually liked the first one, but didn’t think it was THAT good, I thought it was funny. But because of all of the hype and because certain people around me made such a huge deal about that movie like it was the best movie ever made, I lost all motivation to want to watch the sequels. And no, I have yet to watch them, and I have no interest to.

Same thing with Transformers. I thought the first one was ok, but it definitely had a lot of flaws, but hey, it’s Michael Bay, I’ve seen worse from him… But people make it out to be like it’s the best action movie ever made, then when people make perfectly legitimate criticisms about the movie like they have done here on this site, I see the same lame excuses given over and over and over and over and over. So I can’t help but be sarcastic about it.

So sorry if when I sarcastically gave excuses for the movie that it resembled something you, ogb, or whomever else have said, but it’s all been said by many people, and it sounds equally ridiculous coming from anyone.

Something similar was happening to me with The Dark Knight, but luckily I liked TDK enough to not let the overboard hype for it to make me not interested in Batman 3. But it has dampened my enthusiasm for it…

Anyway, back to Transformers, the thing I think is the dumbest thing about some of the comments made here is how it seems that people are not allowed to have a critical opinion about this movie. Statements like saying anyone who doesn’t like it isn’t open minded, or anyone who doesn’t like it just doesn’t get it, or whatever is just SOOO STUPID because it’s all opinion. Yet there are people who act like their opinion is “wrong” and like there’s something wrong with the author of the article for making his opinion of what he’s seen known. I mean, seriously, go back to elementary, you can’t prove or disprove an opinion… Give me a break, there really shouldn’t be a need to explain the difference between opinion and fact, come on…

  22. @ken j
first i never said it was aimed for kids or anybody. Second i’m not going at you because of your thoughts about the movie… i’m pretty sure i’ve made that clear in any and almost every thread that i comment on that to me everybody’s opinion is valid cause its there opinion… all i’m saying is that you do like to go at ogb when it comes to a transformers thread. Ok so the hype for this movie is what you hate and makes you not want to see it… but you still go these threads knowing that there is going to be hype about it in here? unless you purposely are trying to suck in all the hype to have a reason to not watch it… but then it goes back to my question… why even bother going at it with people if your not going to watch the movie…?

  23. Oh no no, don’t get me wrong, I am coming to watch the clip, and I still find the stupid reasons people give to be quite amusing in itself, regardless of what movie or what topic it is for, haha.

And I don’t really care if someone says they like it, it’s just stupid when they try to say that there’s actually something wrong with the people who don’t like it. It’s more or less just ogb that does this, most others simply state their opinion that they like it. Which is cool with me. I’m still not planning on watching it though, haha.

  24. @ken j
ok… thats all i wanted to know. I’m pretty sure we’ll bop heads somewhere else…but in this thread no…for now…lol.

  25. I was thinking about making another comment, but this is clearly a discussion between a select group of people who hate each other. I’ll get my coat.

  26. Interesting how people who defend the inclusion of idiotic dialogue and “tongue-in-cheek” scenes in this movie that is supposedly a “potential world-ending dramatic saga,” have absolutely nothing to back up why the crap should be in there. Instead, like on the IMDB.com boards, they attack the posters complaining about it.
Maybe, instead of wondering why such trolls put up with this crap (and expect the rest of us to), we should just give intelligence quotient tests to posters, and then post the results in their replies. That would likely explain the entire situation. I’ve said it before: you either expect more from your Hollywood movies that you pay to see, or they will continue to give us the same, dumbed-down crap, over and over again. Right BAY?

  27. Ken J why do you keep going on transformer threads when you clearly don’t like it at all. Your arguments are pointless and we already know what you think so stop going on about it so people can actually talk about the trailer.

  28. I dig the action in the trailer but then again I dug the action in the first film as well. I don’t believe the action as ever been a point of contention of anyone. This movie may very well hit over $100 mil on opening weekend.

We all approach this type of movie the same way, sitting in the theater chair with our brain’s remote in hand, finger on the mute button just waiting for the dumb and unnecessary dialog and love interest to end so we can see more robots beating the crap outta each other.

At first I thought Devastator was silly looking but after that trailer I have officially changed my mind. Of course one wonders how the 70 ton robot gets sucked up with the sand but the 150 lbs humans hiding behind an empty half ton van don’t is a minor point.

  29. “Interesting how people who defend the inclusion of idiotic dialogue and “tongue-in-cheek” scenes in this movie that is supposedly a “potential world-ending dramatic saga,” have absolutely nothing to back up why the crap should be in there.”

Somebody help me… I actually agree with something charles darwin said. :-P
