A new trailer has appeared online for the upcoming George Clooney, Ewan McGregor comedy, The Men Who Stare at Goats. And I think you’ll be happy to know that the first trailer wasn’t just a happy accident – the new trailer also makes it look nothing less than fantastic.
Along with Clooney and McGregor, The Men Who Stare at Goats co-stars the likes of Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey (that quartet of actors is reason alone to see it). It’s directed by Grant Heslov and is based on the 2004 non-fiction book by Jon Ronson. Just as a reminder, here’s the official synopsis for the film, and then we’ll get to the new trailer:
A reporter (McGregor), trying to lose himself in the romance of war after his marriage fails, gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent (Clooney) who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose goal is to end war as we know it. The founder of the unit has gone missing and the trail leads to another psychic soldier who has distorted the mission to serve his own ends.

For whatever reason, I still prefer the first trailer, but nonetheless this one does a fantastic of making it look like one of the year’s best films. I especially love the part where Spacey is trying to guess what’s on the card, and when Clooney’s character gets it right instead, Spacey gets mad over the wrong letter being read out

2009 is going to end up being quite a year for George Clooney – on top of The Men Who Stare at Goats, he also has Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air (which also looks fantastic) and Fantastic Mr. Fox. I don’t think the latter is going to get him much awards buzz (he’s just lending his voice for it), but the other two give him a double-shot at getting an Oscar nomination when that time rolls around again.
