ln0001 star wars New Star Wars Movie on the Way? [Updated]

[UPDATE: Well THAT was fast - Thomas Dolby has clarified his statement on his blog, quashing this rumor. Still, makes for a good discussion topic.]

The Internet + Hot Topic + Vague Rumors = Big News!!!  While the following isn’t exactly a formal Star Wars press release, it does get the old gears turning in the mind.  /Film and AICN are to be credited with the troublemaking of pointing it out.  Namely, Thomas Dolby (best known for his musical work incorporating electronic instruments into such songs as She Blinded Me with Science) blogged the following during a visit to the home of Paul Sebastien of LucasArts:

“Last night he was telling me a little about the forthcoming Star Wars-related TV show, movie and online games—very cool indeed.”

More Dolby talk and piercing analysis after the jump.

Star Wars-related.  Huh.  He could’ve said, “the new Star Wars film”, but he didn’t.  Star Wars-related sounds like a movie about the factory where R2D2 was made.  Considering the scope of all six films, we’ve now seen Anakin’s innocence, rise, temptation, fall and demise (it could’ve been soooooo good).  Doesn’t sound like there’s much left there.  Still, any film with the franchise name attached (new characters or old) will be a big deal.  As far as the TV show, movie and online games part, makes sense that the folks over at LucasArts aren’t just throwing darts at a board with pics of the Twilight stars on it.  Why are we trusting this man?  Let’s look back at his blog for signs of credibility:

“I could have done without the last three SW movies.”

Seems credible to me.  Who knows where this will lead, but I for one am interested.  Currently, USA is running Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a 3D CGI-animated series, created by Lucas and centered around the Grand Army of The Republic fighting the New Droid Army of the Separatists.  When I originally heard about the last three films, and the intention of making the villain the lead, showing his well-intentioned starting point and his giving in to evil, I was thrilled.  The premise is exciting enough that I’d say Episodes I, II and III are the perfect candidates for a full reboot (although I certainly doubt that’s what Dolby was talking about).

No word on when a movie would be released, but USA’s airing the next episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Friday, January 1st.

Would you rather see a totally new spin-off from the franchise or a retelling of the first three parts?

  1. “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” trilogy? Or, Bane!?

  2. Guys if you think about this the Star Wars Trilogy Saga is still Incomplete There needs to be a Star Wars Episode ZERO..there is still soo Much to tell in these movies..Here is why:

In Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones when Count Douku has Obi Wan hostage tied to the rings aroung his hands..Count Douku tells Obi Wan that “to remember that Qui Gon Jin was once Count Douku’s Apprentence as he (Obi Wan) was once his”

This tells us that if they did make a Episode ZERO the Good Jedi’s Should be Count Douku as the Master and Qui Gon Jin as the Apprentence..Obi Wan shouldnt make an Appearance until the end of the Movie after Count Douku turns his back on the Jedi Force and goes to the Dark side

Then we Have Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith When The Chancelor has a private meeting with Anakin Skywalker and tells the rest to leave them.

“The Chancelor who we know is Darth Sidouis tells Anakin about a Sith Legend of a Evil Sith Lord named Darth Plaguis the Wise who knew everything about the Dark Side of the force and could raise people back from the dead but couldnt save himself from dying. He taught his apprentance everything he knew about the dark side of the force..then one night his apprentance killed him in his sleep.”

In this senerio guys the Aprentance was Darth Sidius and the Sith Lord was Darth Plagius The Wise who is an Evil Goblin if you look at this website which might interest most of you…Look for Darth Plaguis the Wise and you will see who he is…

So this tells us that In Episode ZERO or 0..The Good Jedi’s should be Count Douku and Qui Gon Jin and the evil Jedi’s should be Darth Plaguis the Wise and Darth Sidius who in this movie would be the apprentance of Darth Plagius…in the end Count Douku turns to the Dark side and Qui Gon Kin takes his place and ends up recruiting Obi Wan Kenobi…

Then After Darth Sidius kills Darth Plaguis in his sleep he ends up taking his place and recruits Darth Maul which will eventually lead us to Episode 1: The Phantom Menece. This My friends would be a good Story to tell. For Star Wars Episode: 0

  3. Guys the Star Wars Trilogy Saga is Still incomplete here is an awsome story to tell:

Star Wars: Episode 0 or ZERO Why? Well let me tell you why:

In Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones when Count Douku holds Obi Wan Hostage with the rings around his arms Obi Wan tell’s him that he is a trator to the Jedi Force..This is Count Douku’s Response:

“Did you not forget that Qui Gon Jin was once my apprentence as you were once his”

Here he was refering here is Qui Gon Jin being the Apprentance of Count Douku before Count went to the Dark Side.

So this tells us that for Episode ZERO the good jedis should be Count as the Master and Qui Gon Jin as his Apprentance. Obi Wan Shouldnt appear until the end of the movie.

Next We have Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith

In this movie The Chancelor has a Private meeting with Anakin Skywalker telling him about a Sith Legend of a dark Lord named Darth Plaguis the Wise.. (Continued in next paragraph)

  4. (Continued)

The Chancelor tells Anakin that Darth Plaguis The Wise was a Dark Lord that knew everything about the Dark Side and could save people from sudden death..

Anakin then responded “What Happened to Him?”

The Chancelor who we know is Darth Sidious tells him that “he taught his apprentance everything he needed to know about the dark side of the force.. then one night his apprentance killed him in his sleep”

Here guys what he’s refering to was that The Chancelor who we all know as Darth Sidious killed his old master known as Darth Plagius The Wise learned everything about the dark side before he killed him in his sleep..So in Conclusion the evil Jedi’s for Episode 0 should be Darth Plaguis The Wise as the Sith Lord of the Dark Side and Darth Sidious should be the Apprentance of Darth Plagius..Darth Maul shouldnt come into the picture until the end after Darth Sidious takes Darth Plagius’s place.. (Continued next paragraph)

  5. (Continued)

So guys After Count Douku turns to the Dark Side In Episode 0 This is where Obi Wan Kenobi joins to become Qui Gon Jin’s Apprentance and Obi Wan Shouldnt appear until the end of the movie for Episode 0 after Count Douku turns to the Dark Side and disapears..This will lead us to Episode I: the Phantom Menece

Now in the Dark side area..after Darth Sidious kills his Master Darth Plaguis The Wise in his sleep and learns everything he teaches him about the Dark Side..Darth Maul Should come into the picture at the end of the movie being recruited by Darth Sidious to become his apprentance…This my friends will lead us to Episode I: The Phantom Menece

This would be a good story to tell if Lucas did want to create another Star Wars Movie..There is still so much to tell if you guys want to see a Picture of Who Darth Plaguis The Wise really is and other Jedi’s that arnt even in the movie look in this..(Contiued next Paragraph)

  6. (Contiued from last page)

Now for Star Wars Episode 0: Obi Wan Kenobi shouldnt appear until the end of the movie after Count Douku turns his back on all the good jedi’s including his apprentace Qui Gon Jin and goes to the dark side and disapears..Qui Gon Jin then decides to bring in Obi Wan and join him as his new apprentace..This will lead us to Episode I: The Phantom Mence

Now for the Dark Side area..After Darth Plaguis teaches Darth Sidious everything about the dark side and dies at the hands of Darth Sidious..Darth Maul should come into the picture at the end of the Movie and join Darth Sidius as his new Apprentance..which will also lead us to Episode I..

This my friends would be a really good story to tell..So George Lucas if you are reading this..Ive already written the script for you for Episode 0 you just need to complete the details..LOL and film the movie..LOL

  9. You don’t MAKE your mark by stepping into the footprint of someone bigger. You make your mark by walking parallel to them or better yet overtake them!

I can hardly believe people have allowed themselves to stretch a couple of words into such misproportioned dimensions. It was clear to me from reading the little blurb that they were talking about stuff that we’ve already heard about, live action TV series and the C.N. future episodes. They just used the wrong words. If that annoys you then you should put a little more effort in your own attempts to write on the net. Try leading by example, try harder. I thank you in advance for your efforts. I’ll continue to try to improve too…

  10. No, just… No.

George Lucas has driven his creation into the ground to the point where the best defense he could come up with for the lazy writing, screenplay, etc, was that it was always for kids.

No, George, you don’t put images of the charred skeletal remains of a character’s relatives in a movie for kids. You don’t have limbs being severed, or Luke’s failure in the cave resulting in an image of his own decapitation in a movie for kids.

But I digress. The reason why things have gone downhill is in part because they responded to fans much like the ones here who demanded “more”. Well, we have more, but when is more, not actually more? When it’s the prequels, followed by The Clone Wars. This is what is called the law of diminishing returns. If you are still a fan, do the franchise a favor and stop asking for more, because more for the sake of having more produces crud. Every. Single. Time. What people often think they want, often turns out to be not what you really want.

What should happen (in a sane world) with the Star Wars franchise?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not for years. Not until another generation has a chance to forget about the whole thing both good and awful. And then, only then, can someone like a J.J. Abrhams of the future, with that sense of fun long absent from the franchise, take a fresh look at the material. Maybe start with re-doing the prequels as one film (there really wasn’t more than a single 2 1/2 hour film’s worth of significant plot points in all three films), followed by remaking the traditional trilogy with an emphasis on tweaking the second half of Jedi (fewer Ewoks).

Or make a new story in the same universe, but whatever they do, the first thing they have to do is WAIT.

  11. I would love to see an episode 7-9 arc. Sort of a “Star Wars: The Next Generation,” if you will. Pass the torch to younger actors, obviously, but have Mark Hamill be Jedi Master Skywalker.

I would see that. I am excited about a live action TV series though. So while there is no movie in the pipeline, I think that TV is a great medium to tell future stories in the Star Wars universe. I could see it being really successful if done well.

  12. The old Man,

Who are you talking about..are you talking what I just recently wrote about a good idea for a future Star Wars movie..Im not trying to be better than the famous and genius George Lucas..Im sorry but if that is what your trying to say then im sorry to tell you buddy but your apsolutley Wrong about that..Im attempts are only to give great ideas about future Star Wars movies not to try to think im better in writing a script than someone bigger..Isnt that what this thread is about? Giving our ideas and comments about what we think should happen? next time you say Try Harder..make sure you really do try to improve your self as well.

  13. J. J. Abrams ruined Star Trek more than George Lucas’ new star wars. At least Lucas retained the same FEEL throughout all six films. Admit it people: bubble-headed aliens playing instruments at a cantina isn’t THAT much more sensible than Jar Jar. Mr. Abrams, on the other hand, used a 1960′s show about optimism and futuristic exploration, and turned it into another contemporary Lost episode, loaded with nonsensical backstabbing and violence.

Back to the main subject, I feel that Lucas is justified in this new live action show though I do agree that he should not direct. Star Wars is his thing afterall. He invented that galaxy and its weird inhabitants. He can do whatever he wants to it.

  14. If a new movie will be made, let’s say, a new trilogy, I’d like it to be based on the series of books written by Timothy Zhan which was set a couple of years after Return of the Jedi and a new republic was being established. This New Republic is threatened by the remnants of the Empire, led by a Grand Admiral who, at the time of the fall of Emperor Palpatine, was stationed in the outermost regions of the galaxy hence, he escaped being persecuted by the rebellion. This is also where the Mara Jade character was introduced (I think).

If they would still opt of another “prequel” (a movie or TV series, or whatever), I’m very much interested to see a show about the origins of the Jedi and it will take on subject matters like, where did they come from? When in the history of the Galactic Republic did they arise as guardians of peace? How did they evolve? Who was the first Jedi Master and who was the first Sith Lord? When was the lightsaber invented and who developed it?

It would be interesting to see these on screen.

  15. Ken,

I had fun watching Star Trek. It felt light and energetic. (Where was the backstabbing? I just watched it today on video. I didn’t see any violence more graphic than the aforementioned charred bodies scene in episode 4 or severed limbs in multiple episodes – that scene was actually frightening when I was a child, not that I’m arguing it should have been edited out – it’s still a powerful image).

Watching the prequels was a chore. By the time I entered the theater to watch Revenge of the Sith, it felt more like fulfilling a job requirement than a thing of wonderment that entertained me in my childhood. It was as if my thought process said: “Well, I’ve come THIS far with the series, I might as well finish it out”.

And none of the cantina aliens were made into featured characters, or performed poo jokes.

  16. Fenix-

I’m not really sure how to answer your question, as I don’t know what you’re driving at.

The point I was trying to make is that a new filmmaker has more to lose and everything to gain. Lucas is fat and rich from his exploits and doesn’t really seem to have it in him to direct (or even write) very good or very entertaining movies anymore. I don’t mean to knock him. It’s sometimes simply a byproduct of success. Once you have it, it is hard to maintain that same creative drive that drove you to get there in the first place.

  17. ‘It was as if my thought process said: “Well, I’ve come THIS far with the series, I might as well finish it out”.’

Man, you have hit the proverbial nail on the head! That’s how I felt. I even tried to talk myself into liking them more to no avail.

  18. @ ronin

I’m with you on the Tim Zahn thing, man. Zahn was actually more on target with the feel of Star Wars in those 3 books than Lucas’ prequel trilogy can ever hope to be. Problem is, those books now contradict so many things in the prequels that they could never get made into movies without heavy rewrites, the results of which would produce a movie that wouldn’t even resemble the books we remember.

  19. It’s hard to say how much of “it” Lucas ever had in retrospect. He showed promise with THX1128, captured lightning in a bottle with Star Wars, but I think Empire (which most consider the pinnacle of the franchise) was helmed by Irving Kirshner, who rounded out and polished off the rough edges. Lawrence Kasdan (also responsible for writing the best of the Indiana Jones films – Raiders) was also responsible for the best of the writing on the series. By the time Lucas took over writing and directing responsibilities for the prequels, he’d either forgotten how to do those things well, or he only got lucky. He may very well just be insecure about his abilities and feels afriad to venture out beyond his two most established franchises.

It’s a pity. The guy had talked about all the smaller indie type flicks he wanted to go back and do with all the money he’d accumulated from Star Wars, but he never did. He just kept going back to the well. You can only do that so many times before people start to think the Emperor (no pun intended) really isn’t wearing clothes.

Most solid directors have more than one or two film franchises under their belts. Even though Lucas’ good friend Spielberg, despite going back to the well with the latest Indy film, still can claim “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan” as feathers in his cap, and some greater diversity in work.

  20. She-sh the whole point of allowing the other medias to exist is that they are what George Lucas has allowed for, the best filler to be created. I.E. if you have “great Ideas” you should devote yourself to those. He has made his position well known; “he holds the film reigns himself!” If you think you have something truly worthy then write a book. He’s said it before “the films are complete.” He has also said “he has No time to follow everyones work on the “Star Wars” continuity. He finds it sufficiently challenging to follow and keep straight his own work.”

Why work everyone up into a pointless frenzy every time someone close to the media tries to grab a headline. This is a classic example of one those times. Don’t be Lemmings! Fine the site might have a duty, but we don’t. Here’s how you young turks should be taking it, about at the 30 second mark… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQhJzxYjUNw&feature=PlayList&p=B171E27B91423780&index=5

  21. The new movies should be kinda like the books that were made about Han and Leia’s kids. Quit going back words in time, and having the old stuff bigger and better than the new stuff! R2D2 had rockets in the past, but in 4, 5, and 6 did not… wtf? No reboots here. Just go forward with a great story and special effects, and don’t look back!

  22. A reboot worked perfectly for Star Trek because the dynamics of Trek allow for time travel and parallel universes, Star Wars does nothing of the sort. How exactly could it be rebooted?

The prequels have a lot of fun stuff to offer, and Lucas didnt script them by himself, so the blame for the bad writing isnt entirely his. ROTS is a great movie.

The dialouge in the original trilogy is equally shoddy.

Rebooting Star Wars will never happen. Using the idea of Han and Leia’s kids works perfectly, they could have the original actors back, but tell new stories.

  23. In order to do it right (way Hollywood does it) they need to remake it.

No really, forget what we know and just redo everything that has been done… :D

Oh wait Family Guy did that… ;)

  24. they could base the next star wars film off of the Apprentice (StarKiller). That could make a badass movie

  25. Sith is only a “great” movie when compared to the previous two installments, in my opinion. It was an improvement, but still had too many cringe worthy moments to approach anything close to what I would call “great” in the big picture.

A lot of what is good about Sith was just seeing what we already knew was coming for years. Anakin’s final turn. The drama inherent in that act helped buoy the film above its predecessors. It’s also part of the reason why I argue that the prequels should have been a single film with more focused, defined, and concise character arcs.

  27. about 12 or 13 years ago i had a period where i read about 20 of the starwars books and found as someone posted here the books by Timothy Zahn to be not only good but great.. in Admiral Thrawn he created what i believe to be the best villain to come out of the starwars universe because although he was the bad guy.. you couldn’t help but respect how brilliant he was and i even found myself kind of routing for him.. and as was posted, these were the books Mara jade was introduced in (another great character).. alas to make a movie of these books would never happen as they take place only 5 years after RoT jedi.. and Luke, Han and leia feature heavily, and as we all know what a stickler for detail lucas is, he could never get any one else to play those roles, as i’m sure none of us would want him to… so i think if he was going to make a movie it would have to be an original story or maybe one of the later books as was also posted as an idea.. but if you like reading the starwars books and haven’t read the thrawn trilogy, i strongly recommend them… p.s i hope if he makes a series, it’s not for kids…pps…The new StarTrek kicked ASS!!.. peace..;o)

  28. …. IT’S OVER!

  29. If you have kept up with the games you see a very rich and deep story line in them. They would make a very good movie if done right. There are so many good directors out there that would really breath new life into this franchise. Is it over? No. If it were we wouldnt be having all these new games coming out, and we wouldnt be talking about it here. Maybe one day we will see.
