‘Spider-Man’ Producers: Peter Parker is the Only Spidey We’ll See in Movies

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the second film in the rebooted Spider-Man trilogy, hits theaters this week, and a third and supposedly last film starring Andrew Garfield as the webslinger is scheduled for 2016. The franchise is nowhere near done with Sony already planning Venom and Sinister Six spin-offs to flesh it out some more, yet audiences are already wondering who will be the next to don the Spidey costume.

Garfield, for what it’s worth, recently suggested passing the torch from Peter Parker to Miles Morales – the current iteration of Ultimate Spider-Man in the comics. The idea is definitely an interesting one since Morales, as a 13-year-old Black Hispanic kid, was met with much applause for making Spider-Man a racially diverse character.

But it seems from an interview with The Playlist that producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach have other plans about where the franchise will go, and sadly it doesn’t involve passing the torch to anyone while they’re still in charge. When asked if another Spider-Man will take Peter Parker’s place, Arad answered:

No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.

While the original Spider-Man trilogy had its own share of problems, and the new trilogy has attempted to better them, those issues began and ended with the story itself. A new trilogy with a new Spider-Man would have the benefit of starting over, without simply rebooting the franchise yet again somewhere down the line. In other words, there is only so many times you can watch the same premise.

Arad is right, however, that being true to a character is very important. This is why telling Peter Parker’s story is more important than him simply being Spider-Man, and why the story of another Spider-Man, whether it be Miles Morales, Ben Reilly (clone Spider-Man) or Miguel O’Hara, could be just as important. After all, Spider-Man is not just a superhero, he’s also a ‘man’ underneath the costume.

What do you think Screen Rant readers? Should Peter Parker be the end to Spider-Man or would you want to see another character wear the suit?

  1. I, personally, don’t understand how you can build a universe off of the explorations of one character. Spin-offs, I understand. A Sinister Six film and a Venom film are fine, but with only one character, can you really call it a Universe? Marvel has a universe because they have dozens of character stories to tell and then they can bring them together for a team up. Fox can have a universe because there are so many X-Men characters.

Spider-Man?! I mean how many movies can you make with Peter Parker before people get bored and before you start to recycle the same formulas? Will Black Cat appear and become a partner. Even having Miles Morales be a sidekick to Peter Parker’s spidey would be cool too. I mean why not? Batman had Robin/Nightwing. Avi Arad seems to think he can do the same thing Marvel is doing with jus this ONE property, but reality will soon set in when he tries to do a Spider-Man 4 and Garfield pulls out, then he’s forced to recast or reboot and loses millions. I guess we shall see.

    • No offense, but Im guessing that your knowledge of Spidey is limited to th cartoons and movies, not the comics.

    • Well there’s Black Cat, Spider-Man 2099(Miguel O’Hara), Jackpot, and many, many others. If you read the daily bugle tumblr you can see all the neat little universe thing going on. Some of the “journalists” of the website are Spider-Man characters(sometimes villains) and they mention Spidey fighting villains like “The Big Man” and “Shocker”.

  2. I’ll watch the Sam Raimi’s movies and mutter to myself “Nope…”

In more serious note, what about the scarlet spider, he’s Peter but he’s spiderman.

  3. Good. Peter Parker is the way to go.

  4. I’d hoped they would be more open to the idea. No one’s suggesting that Miles Morales come in this year, only that he’d be a great way to keep the universe going once Garfield inevitably leaves – or would they just rather reboot the whole thing again? To me, ‘staying true’ to Peter Parker would also mean trying to deepen the character’s story, rather than simply telling the same ones over and over again. Will we really need another origin story in the next 10, 20 years? We’ve seen Peter Parker’s start enough times, and it’d be cool to see how his story would end.

    • are you craking kidding me?? NOOOOOOOOOOOO Petter is the one and only Spiderman.

      • You sure about that? Because I’m pretty sure you’re wrong, I love Spider-Man, and I love Peter Parker, but you do understand that Mile Morales is one of the top selling Spider stories right?

    • It’s so unfortunate that some producers can be so close-minded, so territorial, and so unconcerned about the views of the fans. And I don’t just blame the producers but I blame the studios as well.

For example, the studios are obviously of the opinion that, no matter how much the fans like a certain actor playing a certain part, they (the studios) can replace that actor and the fans won’t care. Many fans really liked the 1st two Spiderman movies with Tobey Maguire and thought that the producers, the director, and the actors had done a great job with those 2 movies. Granted that the 3rd Spiderman movie with Tobey Maguire was not as good as the 1st two. I think that this is because they needed a better story and instead of having 3 villains they should have given Spiderman a new sidekick like the Black Cat and just had one extremely dangerous villain. The Green Goblin would have been a sidekick for most of the movie, not a villain.

My point is that there was really no reason to get rid of Tobey Maguire or the director, Sam Raimi (I think) after the 1st 3 Spiderman movies. They could have made Spiderman 4 & 5 with Tobey Maguire.

In fact what they could have done is continued making Spiderman movies with Tobey Maguire as the University/ College/ working-age Spiderman and at the same time started to produce movies with a highschool aged spiderman. The highschool aged spiderman could be played by Andrew Garfield.

I am aware that there are many fans out there who prefer the new “Amazing Spiderman” movies with Andrew Garfield to the slightly older Spiderman movies with Tobey Maguire. And I do admit that the new director Mr. Web (I think), seems to have impressed audiences with his first “Amazing Spiderman” movie. And I do expect that his 2nd “Amazing Spiderman” movie will be even better.

But this is my point… movie producers show little concern, awareness, or respect for the fact that audiences like to see the same actors in the same roles especially when the actors are doing a good job.

I think that there was a missed opportunity here. Sony could have had not one successful Spiderman franchise but two.

The attitude of the producers regarding the idea of Spiderman being in a cross-over movie with other superheroes, seems very territorial and non-cooperative.

    • Miles Morales could be different than he is in the comic books. He could be Spiderman’s sidekick rather that a replacement for a dead Peter Parker.
And he could be just few years younger than Peter Parker.
Having a Black Puerto Rican sidekick with super powers could be really interesting for audiences.
Consider that: (1) Ironman has War Machine as his sidekick; and Captain America has the Falcon as his sidekick.

I think that this idea is worth considering by the producers.

    • I see what you mean. But miles morals would bring to much public hatred and would be bad for sony ( or whoever signs )

  5. They can’t re-boot it again…. how many different ways can you get bit by a spider??!!!

It honestly wouldn’t bother me if they simply re-cast or totally changed the character providing the story was up to scratch.

We all have our favorite 007 actor (Dr No came out the same year as the first Spiderman), they have been swapping actors since 1969 all have been different and all have brought something new to the table. James Bond doesn’t have the exclusive rights to this and has proven if you have good writer’s one character can keep appearing new and fresh for over 50 years!

No more re-boots, I HAVE SPOKEN!

    • its also like Doctor Who.. They keep changing actors and doing fine.. While I really enjoy Garfield as Spider-Man we all know he will call it quits someday.. but another reboot would really anger me

      • well… i am expecting a reboot loyal to the comics or based on the 90s series, sadly they called this reboot “Amazing Spider Man” when they should have named this fail “Ultimate Spider Man”. TASM 2:Rise of Electro suked big time is a total mess

  6. That’s a shame cause that means that not only would they be locking out a great story arc with Miles Morales, but also anything to do with Scarlet Spider, both Ben Reily and Kaine, and the 2099 Spider-man who all have great stories that would make an awesome movie.

  7. Good Lord I hate Avi Arad!

    • Second that! Wouldn’t everyone just get confused with a recast of peter parker? Specially if they’re gonna call it TASM4, wouldn’t it be weird if they had the same actors as villains but a different Spider Man, THE MAIN CHARACTER. Think outside the box, Arad.

  8. Do since Andrew is coming back for Amazing Spiderman 4, your gonna recast!? Kill him off in 3 and replace him with Miles. I’d be a huge step not only in. Hollywood but for African Americans and Hispanics

    • are you smoking nutts?? Gardfield say “black Spider Man”: all people complaining.
they now say no Miles as Spiderman: all people want black Spider Man…
i am hispanic and i dont think this would be a step in nothing.

    • How many black or african superheroes does Marvel have?

How many asian american or asian superheroes does marvel have?

Not saying Spidey should be retconned as Asian, just saying that the numbers don’t lie.

      • NO NO NO – having grown up on Spiderman comics the mere suggestion of the of changing the character to fit “numbers” is asinine. Be true to the character is a good thing and Spidey was white period. To change the character to conform to today’s PC thinking or to “fit in” would be a crime to Spiderman. BTW – I say the not so amazing Spiderman 2 last night and it sucked.

    • +100,000,000

  9. I think a new Spider-Man could work as long as the Peter Parker Spider-Man still exists in that universe. If it is specifically Miles Morales than it would be great to see him as the center focus with Peter still alive as his mentor.

  10. Forgive my ignorance, but can someone tell me how Miles Morales became Spidey? Did he get bitten also? Or something else?

    • Norman Osborn had been trying for a long time to duplicate the effects that created Spider-Man when Peter was bit. He made an 8th mutated spider and Miles uncle being the Prowler, stole some tech from Norman and the Spider tagged along. While Miles was visiting his uncle, the spider bit him. He has all the abilities Peter had and also has invisibility and a venom strike similar to Spider Woman.

      • Ah, very interesting. Thanks for the info!

  11. Why do we assume that just because Garfield eventually “retires” after #3, that the series has to be “rebooted” again?? I’m sure Sony realizes this dilemma, and will simply take the “recast-but-follow-established-storyline” approach.

  12. Great news! Makes me actually breath a sigh of relief. Parker is the only spiderman! Garfields comments about passing the torch were stupid. It’s your second movie dude, you only pass the torch after you’ve left a legacy. Legacy = 6+ movies

  13. Critics are obviously dc lovers, hating on marvel films.

  14. I wouldn’t mind seeing Spiderman 2099 bringing made into a movie.

    • being*

  15. Avi Arad is really pissing me off. -.-
Can’t he just make the fans happy without having to worry about money? This is exactly why I don’t like Marvel as much as I like DC, then again Marvel seems to be aimed more at little kids and DC is not grown up and mature haha.

  16. Thank God. I don’t like the Miles Morales character. Frankly i was mad when Doc Ock took over Parkers body.

    • Did you read Superior Spiderman? If not, then you should. It was good. USM, not so much.

      • I read a few of Superior Spider-Man and the ones leading up to Parker’s “death.”

I agree they are good comics but I am just way too attached to Parker having grown up reading my dad’s originals from the 60′s plus the comics, trading cards and cartoons I grew up with.

I guess I’m well into my 30′s and stuck in my Parker ways.

I feel the same about the Ultimate comics too. Cant stand the Ultimate universe canon

  17. #DonaldforSpiderman

  18. Miles is a better Spiderman no doubts. All the Spiderman movies with Parker has been crap so far. Time to mix it up a little and get rid of these pale bland characters. :)

  19. I am really hoping that there is an ending planned for TASM series. The reason being that the first amazing spider-man became my favorite movie ever, (cuz im a huge spidey fan) and im guessing the new one will take it’s place as ,my new favorite movie XD any way, i would love to see this series end on purpose, instead of like spider-man 3 where it ended do to mess-ups. I’d even be ok with them killing off Peter Parker in the last one, just as long as the character and the world are treated with the same love and care that Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield, and everyone else has given it so far.

  20. i think andrew should do the job for the next upcoming spiderman movies and no changes ust take place ….spiderman should stay where he is as peter parker.///…..and if TASM 3 is the last spiderman of andrew garfield ….i am afraid thats the last spiderman ill WATCH !! Mark webb please don take away gwen ( emma stone) or peter ( andrew garfield) from us !!

  21. I saw ASM2 and (very mild spoiler) it’s set up that ONLY Peter Parker can be Spiderman.

  22. I feel that they should open up to the idea! And i have played the spiderman video games and read some comics and really like the idea of Spiderman 2099 so a Miguel O’Hara would be a great character to gain the attention of many fans! Because it will bring a new futuristic kind of spiderman to the table and i am sure people would love the idea.

  23. Cool. …Peter Parker

  24. A friend called me tonight, said ‘free tickets’ to Amazing Spider-Man 2. Despite my recent frustration with Fox and Sony’s productions, and my considerable reservations, I went.

    PURE GARBAGE, in my opinion.

That said, depending on your feelings towards the first film, you will probably find this film to be the same cup of tea.

I’m to steeped in the classic comic lore to give an unbiased opinion. For me, this film was a clutter of elements I grew up loving, rushed out and remixed strictly for the sake of profit by a corporation.

Weirdly, this iteration hits correct notes where the previous trilogy missed, and insist on doing the things Sam got right, wrong…..I’m guessing to avoid comparisons? BUT GUESS WHAT MARK WEBB?!? Your film has ‘Spider-Man’ in the title, we’re going to freakin’ compare them!!

Some day there will be a genius, a comic book movie Moses to lead us all to the land of milk and honey, who comes along and adapts what’s in the comic books, in all their glory, to the silver screen.

Until that day, I refuse to pay.

  25. Its sad.

One of my favorite tales of spiderman is meeting spidermen from other universes….a scarlet spider, spiderman 2099, ultimate spiderman, even utilize mini series lik spiderman noir….even spidergirl! So many untapped resources….at least marvel, wb, and fox can claim they can have a shared universe…sony has a gem in the spiderman characters…if they choose to use only peter…so be it.

  26. Am I reading too much into thus or did the OSCORP building levels that Gwen and Max were trying to go to in elevator have a significant meaning?

I feel like one of the level’s was 73. That was the year Gwen died in the comics. Was the other level 65? That was the year Gwen was introduced.

    • thats a beautiful observation <33 thank you

  27. Avi Arad is just the worst. He’s also pretty much the only schmuck who doesn’t want
to see Spider Man team up with any other Marvel character on screen. The comic book movie world would be such a better place without him.

  28. For those who ponder the premise of someone else taking up the mantle of Spider-Man: Could anyone else other than Bruce Wayne be The Batman?
You could answer with ignorance & say “yes”, but that would just be your own failed understanding talking. What has given these heroes such staying power to sustain them over the span of 50 to 75 years isn’t so much the costumes, gadgets, & villains they have, but the man underneath the mask who makes the hero. His motivations & methods in doing what he does & why.
You want to change the man under the mask? Then go create a new character because when you alter the essence & very core of what has made an established classic hero great for generations & across 2 centuries simply to cater to the superficiality of todays short attention spanned moviegoers & their “boredom”, then you’re guaranteed to be rewarded with box office dumpster fodder. Much like this Fantastic 4 piece of crap reboot is already shaping up to be & it hasn’t even begun filming yet much less having had the opportunity yet to bomb at the box office.
In this case the man does make the costume & not the other way around.

    • Chad – You are exactly right on all accounts.

  29. Its one thing I like about Sony and Fox is the way they play keepaway with Marvel’s own properties. No matter what Bendis, Alonso, Quesada, Brevoort, Feige or their ilk say about having a multi-racial Spider-Man in the spirit of faux political correctness
