Director Josh Boone and several of the film's main cast members celebrate the end of filming on New Mutants this weekend. The new X-Men spinoff film is currently set to hit theaters next year and is shaping up to be one of the more unique superhero films that 20th Century Fox has ever released. As such, the film is the latest installment in the studio's recent push to begin diversifying their X-Men cinematic universe as much as possible, following the overwhelming financial and critical success that both Deadpool and Logan have experienced these past two years.

After all, both those films were praised for their refreshingly unique tones and serious commitment to getting their characters right, and as such, has seen Fox grow increasingly more confident in branching out from the traditional comic book movie tone or style. That only looks to be continued with New Mutants' "full-fledged horror movie" style, and its ensemble of predominantly young cast members.

New Mutants began production in Boston earlier this summer, and as of today, filming on the X-Men spinoff has officially come to an end. The news came through several Instagram posts by the film's director and stars, including Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams (Wolfsbane) and its rookie cast member, Blu Hunt, who will be playing Mirage. Before the official creative team and cast for New Mutants had been set, the film had already built up a bit of a reputation for itself in the comic book movie fan community, for its strange tonal combination. But with an initial pitch that set the movie up as being done in the style of "Stephen King meets John Hughes," the film has assembled an extremely impressive young cast for itself. In addition to Williams and Hunt, the film also stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

While the film's specific story is being kept under wraps for the time being, it is known that New Mutants will follow its main characters as a group of teenage kids trapped in a secret facility, during a period of their lives when their mutant powers are at their most dangerous. And with that premise, New Mutants has all the makings of being a scary and intimate superhero film, reminiscent of some of King's work - especially since Boone himself is a well-known, die-hard King fan. So should New Mutants manage to live up to that potential, then it could very well be just yet another successful attempt on Fox's part to take the increasingly crowded comic book movie genre into previously uncharted territory.
