New Mutants director Josh Boone reveals the movie’s logo, reminiscent of the Marvel comics, as he announces the last week of filming. Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men franchise has been around in one form or another since Bryan Singer’s 2000 film hit theaters. After the original trilogy, Fox rebooted the main series with X-Men: First Class and rewrote the timeline in X-Men: Days of Future Past. This main line of  X-Men films continues, but arguably the more exciting entries in the franchise have been the spinoff movies, particularly Deadpool and Logan. Since both Deadpool and Logan were successful, Fox is continuing to develop X-Men spinoffs, and one such movie is New Mutants.

Directed by Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), New Mutants is the first of three X-Men films set to hit theaters next year – the other two being Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. It will introduce five young mutants who are discovering their abilities and must work together while trapped in a secret facility. New Mutants started filming earlier this summer in Boston, Massachusetts, and now the project is close to wrapping up, as revealed by Boone himself.

In a post on Instagram, Boone posted a photo of the New Mutants clapper with the caption announcing this is the last week of filming on the movie. The clapper also features an image of the New Mutants logo, which resembles that of the titular team’s 1980s comic book run, but with quite a bit of blood spatter. Take a look:

If you look close under the ‘S’ of the logo, there’s a figure in the snow, which appears to be Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt). Rounding out the other main characters in New Mutants are Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Sam Guthrie aka Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), and Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga). They’ll be joined by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga), a mentor to the group of mutants who has abilities of her own. It’s unclear who the villain of New Mutants will be, with casting calls pointing toward Demon Bear and Warlock as possibilities; previously, Demon Bear was confirmed to be part of Boone’s original pitch for the film.

In terms of what this official logo reveals about the film, the blood-spattered words and snow seemingly affirm that New Mutants will be a horror movie, as Boone previously said. It remains to be seen whether this horror movie tone will lead to the film receiving an R rating, but Fox has certainly found success with its R-rated mutant outings. Deadpool went for the violent and raunchy humor of the Merc with the Mouth’s comic book counterpart, while Logan was an intimate character drama – with more than a few curse words. While we know the main X-Men films will remain PG-13, Deadpool 2 and X-Force are both expected to be rated R.

Of course, with New Mutants wrapping production, fans will likely begin to wonder when we’ll get our first look at the film via a trailer. The movie is preparing to hit an April 2018 release date so it may be some time before we receive a trailer, but the first New Mutants teaser will likely arrive sometime before the end of 2017.
