Ok. Back to real movie news… I have fond memories of Jim Henson’s The Muppets during my 23 years – i.e. the Muppet Babies animated series and The Muppet Christmas Carol; incidentially these puppets were also my introduction to Sir Michael Caine.
When plans were announced for a new Muppet film under the team of writer/director Nick Stoller and co-writer/star Jason Segel (from the upcoming Judd Apatow-produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I’ve only heard good things about), a good chunk of you folks out there wondered if this would be some hard R-rated raunch fest.
Well, you’d be surprised. But you really shouldn’t be.
According to our buddies over at CHUD:
“Apparently their Muppet film is going to be incredibly old fashioned, with the familiar Muppet characters putting a show to save an old theater (the theater from ‘The Muppet Show?’). The danger? An evil character wants to tear the place down to get at the oil underneath, It’s sort of current!”
That sounds cute enough.
Despite being funny as Hell to imagine, the idea of the Muppet characters doing sick and twisted things to one another (not to mention their live-action co-stars) was nowhere close to ever happening.
On a side note, some friends and I were seriously considering making fake movie trailers with the Muppets.
What films did we have in mind, you ask? Although it ultimately fell through; we had all settled on The Shining, Apocalypse Now and Crimes & Misdemeanors.
I still laugh when I think of Kermit screaming, “Hereeeeeeee’s Johnny!”
