Marvel Television Marvel Studios Developing 4 New TV Shows & A Miniseries

Marvel Studios has successfully established itself as a viable and industry-leading film production company with its semiannual big budget theatrical tentpole releases, and several weeks ago, began its expansion under the Disney umbrella to the small screen with Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The series began with high ratings and despite mixed reactions has been picked up for a full season order while Marvel reportedly develops a second series based around the Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot short film attached to the home video release of Iron Man 3.

That second Marvel live-action TV show would be a WWII period piece, ideally starring Hayley Atwell as the titular non-superpowered hero, but that’s just one of many television ideas secretly in development at the studio.

According to DeadlineAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is just the beginning and Marvel Entertainment has four separate TV shows and a miniseries in the works for video on demand and various cable networks. Their multiple sources on the matter remain mostly tight-lipped, emphasizing the security surrounding Marvel’s in-house developments and the power of their non-disclosure agreements.

The report indicates that Marvel has silently begun work on four different drams series with a fifth being a miniseries, nearing 60 episodes in total, and has already begun pitching it to the likes of Amazon, Netflix and WGN America along with cable networks. Interestingly, this means that the Disney-owned studio isn’t going to have all of its TV programming on Disney-owned platforms (like ABC).

We can only hope that Marvel’s interest in a quick and vast expansion onto small screens means that their library of recently reacquired characters including Blade, Daredevil and Punisher have a chance on TV since they do not fit the current Phase 2 and Phase 3 pans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Amazon and Netflix are in the running for a miniseries, it would be a great way for Marvel to release adult-focused content that wouldn’t fit their PG-13 theatrical feature film plans. And fans will attest, Blade and Punisher are not PG-13 characters.

What Marvel live-action TV shows would you like to see most?

Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 31, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. Heroes for Hire

    Punisher (TV-MA)

and bring back Blade for season 2.

    • Also

      Agents of S.W.O.R.D.

      New Warriors

    • heroes for hire fx
      punisher hbo or showtime
blade (reboot) a&e. blade would go with the walking dead crowd

      • More like ‘Heroes for Hire’ on FXX

However yes! Punisher should most deff be on one of the movie channels and it must be rated TV-MA. Now that Dexter is gone, we’re missing our badass vigilante psychopath. Punisher will be perfect for filling in that gape of blood and gore.

Marvel now publishes Dexter issues. Therefore Showtimes should deff pick up Punisher as a series. Fair trade.

        • All three of them need to be tv-ma . the best shows on fx fxx a&e and the movie channels are normally tv-ma. That was my biggest hang up on agents of shield. abc = bs tv. from what I have seen from aos it looks like the exception that proves the rule. it looks like it will be a good show not great but that is amazing for an abc show.

any ways I thought fxx at first too but then remembered that all the shows that used to be on fx are now on fxx so more then likely fx will be looking to add the new shows. I think hfh would be bad as ass a 50′s – 60′s crazy kung fu flick when people flying in the air using chi blasts set in a gritty world like the shield or sons of anarchy. power man aka cage would fit perfectly into that kind of world.

    • I want to see a what if? and the wolverine animated series on adult swim. I think both of those shows on adult swim with their tv-ma ratings would be amazing. I know its a little off topic but those were my two favorite comic books to read as a kid

    • what would be cool too would be a marvel presents type show( that wouldn’t have to be the name of it) were it could star all the lesser sups of the marvel world. it would be a one hr tv-ma stand alnoe kind of like a tales from the crypt but with marvel supers/or heros. the ones that people like could get other episodes in future but they would have to always be introducing new ones. that would be bad ass.

also a tv-ma show staring a sup villain too. I would want dr doom but they don’t got the metal faced villain.

  2. If Agent Carter gets her own series we may see Union Jack and Submariner appear, but Namor can have his own show or movie.

I like a punisher show too, with Tom Jane!

    • I think that since Howard Stark requests Peggy to run S.H.I.E.L.D with him, and it seems ‘Dum Dum’ Dugan and Colonel Phillips are still involved, it is conceivable that any or all of these characters could reappear in aretro SH.I.E.L.D TV show with perhaps Howard Stark, Mrs Stark, original Jarvis, Dum Dum, Chester Phillips, Peggy Carter – and depending what decade they set it in (a Cold War show?) even Nick Fury and/or Hank Pym…

Also, since Nick Fury states that he knew Howard he could also appear in any flashback scenes (a 20-something year old Nick Fury from roughly the late 1960′s/early 1970′s) even if they never make his solo origin film.

    • Agreed, You can’t have a punisher without Tom Jane.

      • Heck yeah, he does a good job as the punisher. I enjoyed that short movie he’d done awhile back some too as that character. It was fun.

  3. :o

I think comic book based mini series are a great idea. It gives them opportunity to explore new characters (and make money), but without the pressure of having to come up with 24 episodes of stories per season.

Things like Heroes For Hire could still work in the regular tv format, but IPs like Agent Carter, Daredevil or Punisher would work better in short form imo.

Regardless, even though I’m not so sure if any of these shows will get picked up (if I’m not mistaken, a few years ago Marvel was developing Hulk, Cloak and Dagger and Mockingbird shows – all of which never saw the light of day), but it’s good to see Marvel’s following through on expanding their brand through tv.

    • the comic book mini series would be a beastie idea. you could have 3-6 1 hr flicks. there is like at least 50 sups I would love to see get show or movies from marvel. that question kind of messed me up trying to pick a couple.

  4. Punisher, Blade, or Daredevil could work perfectly as a mini-series or show. They should do all three will crossing over eachother creating a separate TV universe, maybe even have that lead to straight-to-netflix/amazon movie released with team ups. Doing them outside the constrictive PG-13 parameters would be the only way to do it right.

    • while not will*

    • Why create a separate tv universe when the shows can help expand the movie universe?

      • I would probably do a separate TV universe for the time being with a couple of mentions of events happening in the films. Then later on include them in a one of the Marvel films. I really want to see something similar to Marvel Knights happen.

      • I don’t see it as being a different universe of the movies just a smaller dirty corner. the stuff that happens in the movies are the bigger things, the big bright hero’s, while blade, punisher , and hfh would be the back alley dirty work that shield doesn’t or cant deal with but at the same time is too small for the avengers to assemble . I just hope we get some tv-ma marvel/and or / dc live action tv shows

  5. Marvel BUSTS OUT! And that’s just “Titz ona Ritz” with me! I would say Heroes For Hire would be on my list of “wanna see dat”s, and I certainly would have no problem with watching a Daredevil series or perhaps a Moon Knight series as well. There is always the slight chance that Marvel might throw a surprise hook out of left-field (even though it has been mentioned as a movie) and do an Inhumans series, or even a Dr. Strange series. And as long as we are throwing the speculation around, I will just insert here (and everywhere else) that I want to see Goliath/Hank Pym/Giant-Man and Wasp in The Avengers ASAP!
In any regard, some of the best news I have heard in entertainment recently!

  6. Incidently, I hope Netflix gets some of these. I am a BIG fan of Netflix, one of the best companies around!

    • We’ve noticed aha

  7. I can’t see how they can do Blade as would be tricky to bring vampires into the established MCU…

    • Really? It would be THAT much of a stretch to add vampires to a universe that has demi-gods, aliens and gamma-ray powered superheroes? Seems to me that vampires would fit right in. Unless of course they’re sparkly vampires, then I agree wholeheartedly!

      • blade vs twilight. lmfao

        • they might as well make blade white and make him a flaming homosexual as well

  8. Jeez, I hope it’s all on netflix so I don’t have to go buy other streaming services.

  9. I’d love to see a faux Reality show with the New Warriors and have the series finale be the lead in to a Civil War adaptation

  10. Deadpool! Full MA content could be amazing.

    • that would be beastie. hbo showtime would be home to that show

  11. I feel that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has not been the best advertisement Marvel could have put out so far, not only in the story department but also, and quite glaringly, where budget is concerned.
With that in mind, I think Marvel TV shows should focus on the corners of the Marvel universe that are less effects-heavy. Daredevil, in particular, sounds like a no-brainer to me: it would have all the strengths of a legal drama show, a sit-com, and an action thriller, plus a great potential for cross-overs if Heroes for Hire gets optioned as well.

    • no more police or lawer or hospital shows. I just puked all over my keyboard just thinking of it. if they make a daredevil I hope they up play the daredevil part and not so much the blind lawyer stuff. daredevil would be bad arse as a tv-ma show on a&e or fxx /fx

  12. Blade, Daredevil and Punisher can definitely make for some awesome mini-series. I’m really hoping this is the case.

  13. I’m interested mainly in the Netflix one.

  14. Punisher or Daredevil on a r rated netflix…yes please

  15. …in other news Warner Bros. will be making a new Batman and maybe Superman

    • I hope its a new ips. dark jl on a & E mmh on hbo would be raw. no more super or bats for a while please dc. do something that is not a boar

  16. A good Blade tv show would be awesome. (the one on spike was horrible).

The original Blade remains one of my favourite superhero films.

  17. *tv or internet show

  18. I’ll wait on netflix, I don’t wanna buy other streaming services

MARVEL is just killing it!! Bring on Deadpool, The Punisher, Heroes for Hire!! Marvel continues to lead the way and give the fans all they could want or hope for!! MARVEL is simply unstoppable!!

  20. “And fans will attest, Blade and Punisher are not PG-13 characters.”

Meh They can still easily be with good story telling and proper editing. They were before and were still interesting characters (talking from the books) just because there is blood, guts and language now does not mean it NEEDS to be.

Not that im a prude or anything but if it comes to the point that a character is not being done because of a certain rating cant be obtained I call BS on the writers, directors and editors.

There are ways of showing things and putting things across without really showing them.

Heck soft p0rn does it all the time.

    • I completely agree with this. If it’s blood and language that makes it TV-M, there are ways around that.

      • I also agree. A truly well-written, well-directed and edited show can make its points without relying on explicit content as crutches.

        • Not sure I agree. Punisher punishes people… with bullets. It’s intentionally brutal and violent.

          • Again the Punisher I know was a justice seeker. He only punished them in the sense that they did not get away with what they thought they got away with.

A sniper shot from 3 buildings away, a car explosion, etc. I can think of a ton of PG13 movies that have all of that and more.

He was never a sadistic Punisher (that I remember, he did get some kind of demonic power or some such I think at one point) just a person that turned the lights off of people that deserved it. He is a vigilante in the truest sense as his justice matches the crime unlike say Batman.

I dont think you need to see a head shot in all its glory to get the point across that someone was shot in the head.

However let me reiterate. If the is issue getting the story out based on ratings it can be cleaned up and still be a powerful show/movie with a lower rating.

With that also if the is no reason other then ‘shock’ value there is no need for a lot of questionable language and or scenes.

I LOVE GTAV however I feel the language was just thrown in there for shock value (or some other reason). To me it is that aspect of the game (again MO) that keeps it from being the best game ever. there was just no need for it.

    • but the thing is that marvel has a lot of ips that are pg-13. I like both the clean pg-pg13 sups and I loved the raw gritty ones too. they both got their place. who care that every person wont be able to watch hfh blade or the punisher . there are plenty of pg marvel ips for them. Or we can make blade white and make him a flaming homosexual while we are at it. make hfh Mexican’s who are trying to find work illegally in the united states and make the punisher a really mean Asian female prinical of a shield ran high school.

      • if not that sounds like a pretty funny what if?

  21. man, everytime Marvel does something, it just makes DC look that much worse. C’mon DC, do somthing, anything besides Superman & Batman again and again, it’s becoming embarassing.

    • dc is trying to catch up. the last three batman movies we goffy as hell but the first one of the three was pretty good. It is still a big step up from the batmans from the 90′s. just like the 90′s were from the 60′s. arrow is a good show . They need to get a show on an fxx or hbo type channel so they can have a couple tv-ma shows but you have to realize that the ppl in the marvel comics were always cooler then the ones in the dc comics but that doesn’t mean dc isn’t good.

  22. Daredevil has to be one of them.

  23. Daredevil. Both the character and the franchise have a lot of potential to explore.

  24. Punisher, Daredevil, and Deadpool would be awesome i’d be willing to sit through commercials to see any of those, although they would be ideal on paid cable channels, i wonder if Showtime or HBO has the foresight to bring in Marvel, Punisher or Deadpool on either of those channels would be too freaking awesome.

    • the only way there should be a :
      heros for hire

is tv-ma. I know that not every one would be able to watch them but that’s not the way to look at it. the way to look at it is this:
      the league
      its always sunny
      the shield
      sons of anarchy
      the wire
      breaking bad
      and many others
they are all tv-ma shows. I would want dare devil to be tv-ma more for the villians then him. that is the one of those shows that would be cool in pg13 ish. there are so many different ips marvel has to do a pg 13 show it would be foolish to use one of their more dirtier titles

  25. give me a Great Lakes Avengers sitcom and i’ll be a happy fella

  26. I doubt if any of this programing will be on Netflix, because Disney owns a chunk of Hulu. It seems as if AoS is just the tip of the iceberg for Marvel TV.

  27. Daredevil would be amazing as a tv show if done right

  28. Yes! Daredevil please!

  29. If any of them are half as bad AOS I wont be watching. Unless it’s Deadpool! no actually they still have to make it watchable.

    • I think aos and agent carter (if they make it) would be their pg 13 titles. I hope instead they make a super tv show instead. I would love to see some tv-ma shows on cable tv
