Logan has positioned itself as one of the grittiest, most violent chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the start of its promotional campaign. Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the title character will be quite different from the previous two installments in the Wolverine saga, as the mutant ex-superhero will be grizzled and weathered in a post-X-Men world. Logan’s once-reliable healing powers have deteriorated, leaving him covered in scars.

Both Logan and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) will have to cope with the erosion of their own powers and the loss of a generation of mutants. They do have hope, though, in the form of Laura Kinney (Dafne Keen), also known as X-23, a mutant clone born of Logan’s DNA who possesses his same healing powers and other abilities. A new promotional image for Logan may be teasing the creation of X-23 as part of the narrative.

The official Instagram page for Logan posted on Saturday a new black-and-white photo of an array of equipment, presumably for medical purposes, titled “Supply.” The focus of the picture is on the mysterious device that could be used to inject mutant powers - or a mutant cure. The tools may be tied to the creation of X-23, as Laura Kinney’s claws are likely to be imbued with adamantium in the same fashion as Logan when he became Wolverine.

There is a shot in the first trailer that shows Logan carrying Xavier to what appears to be a kind of hospital bed in a darkened location that could be where the two tend to their medical supplies. The presence of what appears to be surgical tools and anesthetics also suggest that the equipment could be used to help heal Logan and Charles Xavier in the wake of battle; or be part of a desperate attempt to get their powers back.

The photo is the latest in a long series of stark black-and-white stills of people, places, and objects related to Logan in the movie’s marketing push. The supplies could be found in the desert near a smelting plant or gas station, or maybe even a seedy motel. The movie’s promotion has also had a focus on people’s hands - like the one attached to a severed arm - that look to be put to work with all of the mysterious medical equipment released on Saturday.

Logan has heavily emphasized the title character’s struggles to heal himself as his mutant powers have eroded over time and to cope with that reality. Xavier appears to be joining him in the struggle with aging and the loss of his own powers. That struggle will also entail their battle to protect X-23 against the movie’s villains. That may require some extra work to be done to truly give birth to Wolverine’s mutant clone. Whatever the uses end up being for the medical supplies, they will almost certainly serve the overriding purpose of keeping hope alive for the future of mutants.
