Why can’t comic book fans understand that the comics only provide the overall framework for a good movie, they tend not to inform good costume design, set design, and any of a dozen other incidentals.

In fact, the Batman movies that were most visually inspired by a comic-book palette were the Joel Schumacher ones, and we don’t have to be reminded how those turned out.

Story matters. Character matters. Visions differ, but different visions are nothing to get uptight about. And the visual appearance of this Joker is, in my opinion, completely fitting for the universe Nolan set down in the first film.

As long as the established character traits, personalities, motivations, etc. are retained, everything else is just window dressing (not dissing window dressing either, ’cause it can add or detract from the experience in its own right, but whether or not it does one or the other is not dependent upon how closely the dressing matches that of the comics or of previous visions of the subject matter).

Meh. I don’t particularly like this Joker picture at ALL. Face looks all smashed and disguisting with scars and seems running all throughout,hair looks like crap and’s not very green,more yellow it looks like,lips are not shaped right,and his face looks more yellow than white!! And where are his eyebrows,huh?! What,is the face the only thing that’s white? Is it make up he puts on as opposed to it being his flesh’s actual color cuz of a chemical accident? Cuz it sure looks that way! His hands and neck aren’t white at all! The only thing good about this pic is the outfit he’s wearing and his tall and lean size. Everything else is a damned dissapointment. Looks nothing like the Joker from the comic books. Ceaser Romero’s make up over mustache look looked better. And I know some of you are going to hate me for saying those things,but if this is how he looks for the whole film,I’ll be very ticked/sad/dissapointed. And this is coming from a guy who’s favorite superhero’s been Batman since he was a kid! Ive always read and collected Batman stuff,I’m always there to support DC/Batman related projects. So why does WB always have SOME way of letting longtime DC fans down?! Damn!

Updated this with a very hi-res final version. Man, look at his face in the really big picture… the dude’s eyes make him look totally twisted.

I don’t think I have any doubts about Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker.

When it comes right down to it, the character of the Joker almost always is going to upstage that of Batman. It’s the malevolent flamboyance of the character that just tends to dominate the proceedings. Batman is subdued by comparison, unless Nolan pushes Bale’s performance to let loose a little more with a more expressive physical performance than previous incarnations of Batman have been allowed.

In that case, I can see the two sharing the spotlight fairly evenly.

We’ll find out next year, but I will say I’m excited about few films as much as this one for 2008.

I think they brightened the colors too much on the cover vs. the photo, if you look at the shirt and vest.
