I’ve been trying like crazy to dig up more info on the Iron Man armor for the upcoming movie. Previously I posted some rejected concepts for the Iron Man movie armor. Well right now IMDB.com is showing that Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) is handling the visual effects (VFX) for the Iron Man movie. Now pretty much anyone can open an account with IMDB and add info to a page without having to substantiate it, so I don’t know if that’s real information or just someone being cute and/or speculating on which company will handle the special effects.
I’ve stated previously here and elsewhere that the armor for the movie would closely resemble the current Iron Man armor in the comic books. As a matter of fact it almost seemed that the recent Ellis/Granov “Extremis” storyline was created in a very cinematic style, with an eye towards the upcoming film.
Well I’m 99% sure that’s going to be the case, and here is a conceptual sketch for the armor from a compay that’s being considered for the job. I can’t say which one, so don’t bother asking.

As you can see, this concept sketch is incredibly similar to the version currently being worn by Tony Stark in the comics right now. The final design will no doubt change from the above rendering, but I’m pretty sure it will fall along those lines.
My opinion? It looks freakin’ awesome and that’s coming from a long time Iron Man fan. I read the original Bob Layton/David Michelinie run as it was published.
I’ve also heard a rumour It’s been confirmed by IGN.com that Stan Winston is working on a real, mechanical version of the armor, so I would think that in the final version the seams won’t be as tight as they are shown below since realistically it doesn’t seem to allow for movement. Then again mechanical FX are so advanced these days that maybe the suit could look just like it does above and still be functional.
Between the sketch above and talk of Stan Winston on the project, I’m getting ever more stoked about this movie.

I read that Jon Favreau is directing and Robert Downey Jr. is playing Iron Man. That sounds promising so far — assuming they both stay on board long-term.

I am looking forward to this film. Robert Downey JR is a fine actor. And his substance abuse problems should help him get inside the head of Tony Stark.
I am so glad they aren’t going to tamper with the look of the armor. I remember the first time I saw the Green Goblin for Spiderman. It was and remains one of my few complaints about the film.

The body armor needs to be less feminine. It needs more rough, jagged edges to emphasise that it’s Iron-MAN rather than the smooth curves.

The initial version of the armor (there will be a progression of designs in the film) will definitely be more “clunky”.

Robert is a good cast for iron man, although on the directors bloq he is clearly not going with the drunk Tony Stark line. Gwyneth Paltrow will bring exactly what Pepper Potts needs to the screen.

I think it all depends on how it’s done. The cast of Batman Begins is chock full of what I consider to be some pretty big names. And shy of Mrs. Tom Cruise, I thought the cast was stellar. Of course you had a great script, good director and actors good at not playing “themselves”…including the ultimate chameleon, Gary Oldman.

In a recent issue of Wizard Magazine Jon Faverea
was interviewed by them (Wizard) and when they
questioned him about what the suit would look
like he said “you’re going to get your grey and
your classic red and gold”. What did he mean by
classic? I really hope he meant the classic Iron
Man suit and not the new modern armor look. The
classic makes so much more sense than the modern
armor. The modern armor looks so clumsy and clunky,it actually goes against the evolution of tecnology. Technology when modified always tends
to be smoother and sleeker,so they should
definitley go with the classic look. I mean 30
years after he builds the first suit he should
look more like the silver surfer than some robotic
machine.

I hate to disappoint you but the armor is going to look very similar to the suit currently used in the comic books. Up until the most recent iteration I agreed with you… it seemed like recent artists/writers were intent on “de-teching” or de-powering the armor. However the latest (and current) incarnation is much sleeker than it’s been for a long time, and depending on which artist draws it, overall I like it and think it will make a good transition to the big screen.
I think a Silver Surfer-type look just wouldn’t work as well, especially with Favreau trying to make the movie fairly close to a real-world setting (which I think is an excellent direction to go in).
What I really don’t like in the current armor is the 1970’s hooker-looking thigh-highs and those really dumb looking double toes at the ends of his boots.
Have some faith in this one, I don’t think it will be misplaced!

Yeah,Vic,what I meant when I said that the armor should look like the Silver Surfer was that at the peak of it’s development,like say,maybe 50 years after Tony builds the first grey suit and then moves on to the red & gold, in the far future it should be so sleek and technological it would almost look like a second layer of skin. And it would be shiny,like it always has been,and he might look something like the Silver Surfer.
It’s ironic that in some ways the design of the armor in the comics has gone backwards. The original red and gold, if done on the big screen would look very much like what you’re describing.

The suit for Green Goblin in spiderman 1 was done on a very low budjet, and to be honest wasnt really that bad, all it was missing was some purple color, and maybe a cape…
Compare it to what harry wore in spiderman 3, then tell me you feel the same way…

i would like to add after watching the new ion man movie3 times the suit and armour is up to a perfect standard i therefore believe all comment semoting this suit are therefore quite frankly a heap of oppinionated junk.
