The trailer said he is the product of an outlawed faction of the Catholic church and is also combination of different evil men. I didn't get that feeling from the movie. He did go through some type of psychological manipulation but by who wasn't clear; if they wanted it to be a mystery, then they shouldn't have said it in the trailer.
