You like her, you really like her! Fox’s single-camera comedy New Girl smashed the ratings in its debut week and kept almost its entire audience last night, so the network is extending its order to a full season of 24 episodes.

New Girl got a big bump from its lead-in, the season premiere of Glee, when Fox aired the first episode last Tuesday. Between leftover Glee fans and a big turnout for quirky headliner Zooey Deschanel, the premiere scored over ten million viewers, with almost half of them in the crucial 18-49 range.

What’s even more impressive is that New Girl scored 9.3 million viewers (4.4 million in the key demo) in its second week, a real accomplishment for a freshman comedy. Fox originally ordered a standard half-season of 13 episodes for the fall, but the higher-ups have called for an additional 11 to extend New Girl‘s first season into the spring.

The numbers are no flash in the pan; the show is getting positive reviews from viewers and press alike. In Screen Rant’s 2011 Fall Television Preview, we highly recommended New Girl, calling it “practically perfect in every way.” The show scored a 65 on Metacritic with critics leaning heavily towards the positive.

Count Fox president Kevin Reilly among the fans. He released a statement with the extended order:

We love the charming Zooey Deschanel and the entire cast, we’re knocked out with the work that Liz Meriwether and the whole staff is doing and we are really psyched about the upcoming episodes in the pipeline. It’s great that audiences have responded so positively so far and we’re confident that even more people will embrace the show – and more comedy on FOX – this season.

With the extra attention you can expect New Girl‘s influence (not to mention budget) to grow, and that means just one thing: guest stars. The show has already secured Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard and those insufferable “I’m a Mac” commercials) for a multi-episode arc, and last night’s episode “Kryptonite” featured Damon Wayans Jr. Expect even more guest star announcements in the coming weeks and months.

New Girl airs Tuesday nights at 9PM on Fox.

  1. Wow. I’m surprised. May have to check this out after all!

    • Wow…I’m surprised too..but, I’ve seen the pilot.

  2. I’m not surprised, personally. This show has been hyped up so much, it was very unlikely to get cancelled. Honestly though, the pilot episode is terrible. There are two funny lines, but all the characters are flat and not interesting. It doesn’t offer anything new, and what it does offer isn’t good. :/

    • I agree…I also thought it was bad. Chuckled once throughout.

  3. Can someone please tell me why Zoey Deschanel made the move to TV? It seems like she comes out with a new movie every 4-6 months. I am current on the series and I have enjoyed it, Zoey pulls off being a nerd extremely well. Hopefully the supporting cast gets better though, she definitely out performs everyone else on the show.

    • She said on the Nerdist Podcast that she liked the hours and flexibility it gave her to stay in L.A. and still persue other projects, like music and film.

  4. While I think Zooey Deschanel is brilliant and I can watch anything she is in, I feel she has to carry this whole show on her back. The other characters do not stand out in any way. The roommates are boring, the black guy seems to be different each week (maybe thats just cuz of the pilot) and her model friend has no personality.

I only watch this show cuz it is the lead in to Raising Hope, which deserves a better lead in than this, but it is better than those other two comedies they tried to marry with Raising Hope.

  5. What I find just odd is how Screen Rant praised New Girl as “practically perfect in every way” when the show is bad, and the supporting cast weak, but yet they criticized “Suburgatory” and said people should skip it, even though the premiere tonight is great, and way better than anything this show has had to offer so far. *shrug*

  6. I loved the Pilot episode. I must admit I didn’t laugh very much in the 2nd episode and I must admit, I do not Wayans Jr’s replacement – NOT funny at all!

  7. I recorded it because I too like Zooey Deschanel, but I couldn’t watch past the second comercials…What a hugh boring turd…I figured it would get axed right away. The writing was silly at best. There was no humor and what attempts that were made at humor were grade school level at best. I figured Zooey was probaly regretting being accoiated with such an amature looking project…..I figure fox will be cancelling before too long once the hype bump wears off and more people turn off after checking out….
