During this month's round of cancellations and renewals, there was some surprising news for FOX's hit comedy series New Girl. The series, which remains FOX's highest-rated comedy series, seemed like a shoo-in for renewal when the rumors started swirling that season 6 could be its last. Despite the show's success, the network was dealing with some major scheduling conflicts from the stars, and it looked like the season 6 finale could be the concluding episode.

Earlier this week, news broke that the show has indeed been renewed, but for a shortened season that will be New Girl's last. After the season 6 finale seemed to wrap so much up for the show, however, fans are left wondering how season 7 will top things off for the comedy. While there is still plenty to be revealed, a few details about the upcoming final season have emerged.

According to Deadline, season 7 of New Girl will feature a time jump, taking place three years after the season 6 finale. In addition to this, the season will take place over the course of a single year, charting the milestones of the key characters over that period of time, and a final big milestone in the series finale.

While this report is not yet officially confirmed, it would make a lot of sense. The year-long mini-season is reminiscent of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, as well as the final season of Parks & Rec, and is a fantastic format to explore how the characters have changed and what their lives look like now. It also gives the show a chance to explore what happens to the characters and write in a little more closure for the fans, without negatively impacting the work that the season 6 finale did to wrap up the show.

There's plenty to be explored, too. At the end of season 6, on-again-off again central couple Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) got back together, Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) are expecting a child, and life is working out well for the other occupants of the loft. A seventh season set a few years ahead will let fans see whether Nick and Jess stuck it out this time, as well as getting a look at CeCe and Schmidt as parents, and seeing where the rest of the gang have ended up.

Of course, it's important to note that this information has not yet come from an official source at FOX, so it's still only a rumor. The seventh season is definitely confirmed, but the time jump and those hinted-at milestones may still not come to pass. However, this would seem like a perfect way to wrap up the show.

New Girl will return in the fall.
