doctor who header New Doctor Who Promo Trailer: Bow Ties, Angels and Daleks

As is common in the sci-fi series Doctor Who, the face of the doctor has changed again. This marks the 11th time the Doctor has “regenerated” and with him comes  a whole new wardrobe and companion. The series took a much needed shot in the arm back in 2005 when Christopher Eccleston took over the role as the Time Lord. After one good season, Eccleston passed his sonic screwdriver over to David Tennant who successfully handled the role for the next 4 years.

Now Matt Smith is in control of the Tardis and together with his newest companion Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillian, the two are set for another season of time traveling through space. A couple of weeks ago we posted the first teaser trailer for the upcoming 31st season of Doctor Who (5th season of the modern version) and it looks like a ton of fun.

The BBC has recently released another teaser for the show, which debuts Easter 2010 and I’ve got to say, I’m a bit disappointed. The first teaser gave so much more information regarding the upcoming episodes that the 2nd one sort of pales in comparison. I give them credit for being heavy handed on the green screen technology though.

We get a quick glimpse of the Doctor playing “mercy” with his companion Amy Pond, and a Weeping Angel, as well as getting surprised by a Dalek and all while recreating the skydiving scene at the end of Point Break.  Take a look below and then tell us what you think:

I’m really looking forward to catching the newest adventures but I must admit that I’m always wary when the actor playing the Doctor changes. I think writer/producer/director Neil Gaiman (Stardust) tweeted it best today when he said:

“You ALWAYS don’t like the new Dr Who. It’s a rule. You miss the last one. But after a few weeks (or less) he’s the Doctor. It’s inevitable.”

The first three episodes of the next season are as follows: “The Eleventh Hour” and “The Beast Below”, both written by Steven Moffat, followed by “Victoryof the Daleks” written by Mark Gatiss.

What do you think about the newest bow tie wearing Doctor Who and his lovely companion Amy Pond? Are you looking forward watching the next season or are you getting tired of the show?

  1. This looks horrendous, no actual footage from any of the episodes.

  2. I completely agree with you. I heard from Dark horizons that this promo was made to play in front of Alice in Wonderland in the UK. Which would account for the vortex thing they are falling through.

  3. In regard to Neil's comment, the latest phrase in the Whovian Lexicon is “New Doctor Jitters”. http://onceuponageek.com/2010/01/04/doctor-who-

  4. Yeah it is, and the trailer is in 3D at uk cinemas. It might make more sense in 3D but like this it just looks like cheesey rubbish. And Smith's voice seems so weak, there's no confidence or command there at all.
Karen Gillan looks hot though, so she gets a thumbs up.

  5. This is very worrying.

The first trailer started to win me over but ths has me going back to the drawing board.

This looks like a return to the campy old series – it's MODERN HU, a reimagining for the series, NOT a return to the “Classic” series!

The tone looks like it's aimed at children, which will alienate the older viewers. Basically, The Matt Smith Adventures Mark 2.

    A shame rerally.

  6. I know that this trailer doesn't show much from the actual episodes but i totally enjoyed it. It shows a lot about Amy and the Doctor's relationship and there was a rush that came from watching the Dcotr get into action, even if it's only for a couple seconds. I don't mind there wasn't more info, I can wait and be patient because I was patient all year last year and I survived.

One question, though, who do you think is the alien skull that popped out of the ground? A Silurian or what?

  7. I thought it was enjoyable. The initial video was a really exciting rush, I can't count how many times I've checked it out, while this one is more an introduction to the doctor and his companion, Amy.

  8. Not a fan of this video at all. It is a major let down from the first sneak peek. When does he get to tackle new elements? I'm excited for the weeping angels (“Blink” is one of my all time favorite episodes) but getting exhausted by the Daleks.

Plus, the Doctor does not have a very commanding presence. I don't get the whole falling into the vortex… What kind of environment is that? Some things just get ruined with too much green screen.

Love the “Point Break” reference though. It was my favorite part of the clip.

  9. Wow! People actually watch this? I'm in shock.

  10. The first teaser trailer was for the adults. This one is for the kids. It's all good! Can't wait.

(If it was shot for 3D, that makes MUCH more sense re: the concept.)

  11. This is so much fun! I think kids especially will really get a kick out of it. Fuddy duddy adults can re-watch the first trailer. We were never going to get more info then what was in that trailer anyway. That's what the actual show is for!

  12. We just finished The End of Time on Friday and loved it. We're so going to miss David in this role, but hopeful that Matt can do a good job. I really think that Amy is way to young, but I guess they always have to appeal to a younger generation.

And, if it turns out that Matt can't cut the mustard, they can always pull a switcheroo and put someone else there next season.

  13. Right there with you Jessie. I love Blink.

  14. I dont see how this points to Austin N. being grey goose (toothy bf). There is no evidence that AN has a baby, or that Jake G has had a baby. I do not get it, I am not being funny here just need a little help – is this baby toothy thing considered a real clue? if so, we need to look to a HWood guy who has just adopted or actually had a child somehow.

  15. As soon as I saw the new Dr. I got worried and not because its a new Dr. The promo trailers have done nothing to assuage that worry. So I'll just wait for the new
season and hope my worries come to naught.

  16. I know the new Dr WHo rule of he's not the Doctor until you;vbe atched a few episodes and then you accpet him but this time around I'm not so sure this was the right casting.

Does anyone else look at this actor and think it looks like the Doctor has a fake mask on or something? His lower face look, sistored somehow, like as if the squaring of it is exagerated.

  17. I thought the same thing…dude looks weird. Like, not even human. I don't like this.

  19. Definately not normal looking and I don't mean that in a hurtful or insuting way, just not right.
