There’s a new logo for Doctor Who in 2010

At the end of this year, we will see Matt Smith replace David Tennant as The Doctor, Stephen Moffat replace Russell T. Davies as head writer and executive producer and now the BBC has unveiled what will be the new logo for Doctor Who starting in 2010.

With everything becoming anew, they have also decided to change up the logo that has been with the show since its return in 2005. The simple, but memorable, logo we’ve become accustomed to will now be replaced with a more modern looking design featuring the letters DW forming the shape of Tardis.

The always wonderful Stephen Moffat had this to say about the new design.

“A new logo. The eleventh logo for the eleventh Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever. And look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form!  Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle. I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that’s what they’re going to be wearing.”

As a fan of Doctor Who and someone that’s not at all comfortable with change, I just don’t know how much more I can take. I’m ecstatic about Stephen Moffat taking over the show because he is the mastermind behind all time my favorite Doctor Who episodes; “The Girl in the Fireplace,” “Blink,” “Silence in the Library,” and “Forest of the Dead.” Yet, I’ve still yet come to terms about David Tennant leaving.

Still, this new logo is pretty amazing. I love everything about the design. It’s so simple that you can’t believe they haven’t done it earlier. I think this is one change I can definitely get behind. Also, you know what a new logo means? Oh yeah… a new opening sequence. I wonder if they’ll keep the theme song or mess with that as well. With everything changing, nothing is safe.

Only a show like Doctor Who could release a 24 second trailer for a new logo and have me watch it more than once.  Check it out below.

On November 20th, the BBC will be running their annual Children In Need charity drive in which a special clip/trailer from Doctor Who is expected to air. No word yet if it will be from the “Waters of Mars” special or the two-part Christmas special, where we’ll see David Tennant regenerate into Matt Smith.

What do you think? Are you happy with the new logo? Have you come to grips with Tennant leaving? What other changes do you think will be coming as we inch closer to the new series?

Let’s hear it!

The second of the four Doctor Who specials, “Waters of Mars” is expected to air in the UK sometime in November. No word yet on when it will air on BBC America.

  1. Well I’ll tune in and give it a chance. This run has been watchable this far.

Yeah 790, I miss Cushing. Fortunately Lee has a number of things out I haven’t seen yet. I’m aware he has a role in “Alice in Wonderland” coming soon. It’s probably small though, just a voice over I’d guess.

  2. I never cared for the “almond” logo. This one is clever and I like the clean design.

(I, too, will miss Tennant. What a gem he was to the DW crown).

  3. Evoryone was iffy about tennant being cast when he was first announced so I say we give Matt a chance

  4. Ya know Shamose Doctor Who is one of the only shows that I totally dig the change factor. Its written into the Doctors personality as he constantly changes to avoid death and or serious dilemma.
    ^
We were lucky to get 3 seasons of Tennant… Totally ready for the new guy,,, as I know the folks behind the scenes will continue to amaze us,,, v. ;-)

  5. I think the new logo might be an attempt to return the show to it’s ‘classic’ style. The new writting and story arcs, pioneered by Russell T. Davies, were very different to the style of story arcs used in the classic series. The current series uses ‘key story’ words or phrases like “Bad Wolf” or “Harold Saxon” or “the bees are disappearing”. Perhaps there won’t be a story arc like what we’ve been used to since 2005, but rather a story arc that’s more like a serial with many stories adding up to a large story rather than a small hint of something adding up to the series finale.

  6. I don’t like the new logo, I’m quite attached to the old one. I like the warm colours of it. This new one is very cold and sterile looking. And they’d better not mess with the theme song.

I’m pretty alright with Matt becoming the next doctor, but my sister isn’t too happy about it (because he looks emo). I think he’s near enough to David for the transition go well.

  7. Im sorry for those who might no agreee with me but. I think that Russel T Divies was the greatest writer of our time. And that David Tennant is and will forever be the greatest doctor ever. I think that matt smith is wayyy to young to be the doctor, I like the new companion though she is too young as well. I would like to see the others return at some points in the new series though, such as martha, mikey, sarah, and jack. I hope they do show up some times. And I just hope they dont dont change everything like the Tardis i think it is perfect as it is! I dont like the new logo. I hate all this change!!!!

  8. Hay,
no discussion on the latest and greatest episode which was aired last week ? ??
    :(

  9. Has there been any word on when the Syfy-butchered version of the end of Tennant's/start of Smith's reign will hit Syfy, for those of us too poor to afford Dish Network's pricing of BBC America?
