A slew of new photos have been released by Universal for the new Death Race movie directed by the infamous Paul W.S. Anderson. I don’t have the time to dig into this right now, but it’s starting to look like they’ve dropped the “3000″ from the title. If that’s true, it at least drops the “cheese factor” on the title. Whether that transfers to the movie…

It will be interesting to see how this one stacks up against the original Death Race 2000 which starred David Carradine and (seriously) Sylvestor Stallone. While some movies don’t hold up well 30 years later, that one still does as a violent but funny satire about society’s hunger for violent entertainment. Will this one retain any of the wit of the original?
Somehow I doubt it.
Death Race opens on August 22, 2008.

woah,
this looks like it’ll be TONS of fun on the bigscreen. I’m excited from these pics
That car reminds me of Road Warrior. I’ve never seen Death Race 2000 but I’m sure some network will show it before the movie is released.
Gatling guns on Ford Mustangs plus John Statham, I’m sold (at least on DVD).
Well, I’ve never seen anything from this director before, so I cant say anything about how good he is. However, if what I’ve heard about the story is true, then it has potential.
I’ll just have to see when it comes out.
Mortal Kombat
Event Horizon
Resident Evil
Alien vs Predator
Vic
Yeah, I looked up his filmography, and I saw the list of movies he’s made. I’ve just never seen any of them as they’ve never looked to be anything that interested me. I’ve never been interested in the Alien or Predator movies, the Resident Evil or Mortal Kombat games, and Event Horizon seemed more like a horror movie than anything else, and I don’t like horror.
Death Race will be my first time seeing anything he’s made.
hey Adrian …. its Jason NOT John Statham.
Thanks, RastaZen. Hope Jason Statham get a job with Marvel. He would be a great Moon Knight or Iron Fist or even Daredevil! What do you think, gang?
can anyone say….TWISTED METAL?
Looks great - as John says, very Road Warriorish - but I’m missing the Wacky Races eccentricity of the cars in DR2000. Likewise I’m guessing the fascist subtext and general…oddness will be gone too, in the same way the horrible remake of Rollerball was exactly the kind of dumb spectacle the original was satirising.
