Bucky Barnes The Winter Soldier Poster The Winter Soldier Spotlighted in New Captain America 2 Poster

It’s hard to believe that we’re just a mere few weeks away from the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the first Marvel superhero movie of 2014, opening at the end of March in Europe and the first weekend of April in North America. With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back on the air, Disney is doing everything they can to promote the Captain America sequel, which the ABC series will help setup in its stories about the mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. organization and how it may be crumbling.

Along with an extended TV spot that aired during the return episode of AoS, Marvel Studios is releasing more Captain America 2 character posters, one which introduced new character Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and a few more since. Today’s new Captain America: The Winter Soldier poster places the spotlight on the film’s titular antagonist.

The character-based one-sheet was shared via the official Captain America Twitter account but it’s not the only new promotional poster for the film – most of which feature the same color scheme, and a hero pose of a character with S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarriers in the background. Below is the full poster, taking any mystery away for moviegoers who weren’t sure of The Winter Soldier’s identity as Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) familiar friend Bucky Barnes from WWII who makes his way into the modern era as an enemy – who also happens to be super-powered as the Captain America 2 Super Bowl trailer made abundantly clear (watch our analysis video for more).

The pose is familiar to what we’ve seen of the character in promotional art and in the background of other posters and banners. Bucky, seemingly brainwashed, is taking orders for an unspecified enemy faction and is working towards disassembling S.H.I.E.L.D., and unlike Cap, he’s very fond of using high-powered weapons.

Below is the recently released Falcon poster, featuring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson character in mostly plain clothes but suited up in the powered wingsuit which features not only jet boosters on the back, but a pair of small machine guns that come out from the top when needed. The other posters feature new character Alexander Pearce (Robert Redford) in his old S.H.I.E.L.D. building, and Steve Rogers in a new pose without his helmet.

It’s hard not to love the design of the Secret Avengers-inspired uniform Chris Evans sports in most of the marketing material, blending together the more modern Avengers uniform – which not everyone loved – and the more practical, heavier design of his WWII outfit. The imagery emphasizes the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on Cap’s arm, making him an agent of the organization – at least when the film starts off and the character is still finding his place in the modern world. Clearly, much of the film’s plot is about that very identity crisis and not being sure of who’s trustworthy.

  1. Cool posters but I wonder why Bucky would smear grease paint on his face, especially if they follow the whole “unfrozen from cryo-stasis for missions then quickly put back on ice” deal. He’d be in and out quickly enough for only a select few over the decades to possibly see the same killer, otherwise he’d be like a ghost.

I guess it’s better than the domino mask he adopted eventually which still made no sense considering everyone knew his identity anyway once the events of The Winter Soldier played out..

    • Maybe he’s a fan of Arrow. ;)

      • HA! I was thinking the same thing

        • Whose not a fan of Arrow?

    • “…but I wonder why Bucky would smear grease paint on his face…”

Because Cap played a practical joke on him by putting grease on his binoculars?

    • Doesn’t black grease paint help absorb light or something like that? Like football and baseball players. Makes sense if he’s a sniper?

      • I think so but didn’t they prove on Mythbusters that it made no real difference after testing it?

        • Actually, IIRC, they proved it did. It reduced the glare off your cheekbones or something.

          However, I may be wrong.

  2. the Winter Soldier looks great but what happened to Falcon? looks like they mounted his torso on legs at least 2 sizes smaller than he would need. don`t know the character, is that intentional? did he have some horrible accident and leg transplant?

    • I’m gonna say thats just the angle the picture was taken from. It does make his legs look short.

      • the point of view is from the bottom up so if anything his legs should be huge and his torso and head small. pretty weird, though not really essential I guess ;)

    • Photoshop fail.

  3. Woa woa woa, so the winter soldier is actually Bucky? Was’nt Bucky in the first captain america?

    • Dun dun duuuuun.

Sorry if I ruined the spoiler for ya. Then again, you never know, people online might actually be pretending to not know.

      • @Dazz: Hahaha. That was great with the suspense music and all. But I knew the winter soldier was connected to cap’s past, bur Bucky went completely over my head. But yea you never know what’s true or not on the net haha.

    • If you’re serious, then yeap, that’s him. We’ve been quasi-trying not to mention that up front in posts because a lot of moviegoers not watching the trailers/featurettes actually haven’t read those books, but now there’s no hiding from it.

      • @Rob Keyes: Great article and I find this interesting and It makes perfect sense. My interest is hightened for this film.

      • And more casual moviegoers may still not even know until actually seeing the film, if they miss some of the marketing material or don’t really remember the first Cap film.

I definitely don’t envy you folks, Rob, trying to do a decent job of avoiding spoilers when talking about something that’s arguably not much of a secret because of the comics (even if someone isn’t a comics fan, that’s what shows up when you Google the film’s title), but which is further confused by so much of the marketing material up til now not actually being straightforward about whether it’s supposed to be a secret or not.

        • It’s definitely tough sometimes, because you and I, and lots of other fans of the films/comics see this as complete common knowledge – I mean we know Sebastian Stan is playing him. It’s in the trailer! Right? But in the comments there are still sometimes readers who will get upset if we mention that it’s that same dude who fell in The First Avenger, lol.

No biggie though, we just toss in spoiler warnings when we think we need to :)

          • I’d LOVE to see an ironic spoiler warning if the DC character of the same name ever got written and cast in a future WB movie.

  4. One of my favorite comic story lines of all time. Brubaker’s run on Cap, The Winter Soldier, was brilliant storytelling. I hope Cap gets a hold of the Cosmic Cube as the comics to make Bucky ‘remember’ and we’re not settled with “cognitive recalibration,” or Black Widow smacking his head on a pole.

    • Agreed and agreed!

    • The cube is in Asgard if you dont remember. Thor took it and Loki when they went back.

  5. The Falcon looks more like The Wasp if Marvel made one

  6. Can’t wait to see how how Bucky plays out in other movies(assuming he lives). I was always a DC comics guy so I don’t know how true this is, but a friend told me Bucky eventually becomes good and even becomes captain america after Steve dies. Chris Evans said he wants to take a break from acting soon. Anyone think Captain america 3 could be when Steve “dies” and Bucky takes over?

    • Yeah, Cap was “killed” (actually sent back in time via some weird time bullet) by someone on Red Skull’s orders and after Hawkeye had turned down the role of becomign Captain America during the Civil War story, Bucky put on the costume until Steve came back.

Pretty sure Sebastian Stan was contracted for 6 movies so you never know, he might become Cap eventually, if not through Steve’s death but by Steve giving up so Bucky’s the “official” one and Steve’s the “super secret” one working with a covert squad.

    • Yeah, Sebastian Stan signed a 6 movie contract, cap 1 and cap 2, still has 4 more to go, Should be interesting to see what they come up with for his character in future movies

  7. Just get the film out now – no-more posters and trailers….just the movie ! Same goes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 !

  8. Well, I’ll say it. Chris Evans looks like he is channeling Colin Farrell with the brow. Halfway doesn’t even look like Evans.

  9. Just yesterday I was grieving the lack of red in Falcon’s gear, and….. Here you go! I would have liked a little red incorporated into his shades… Red lenses?

    • Wait…I thought the lenses were red?

  10. Whats everyones take on Sebastian Stans/Winter Soldier position, giving that its confirmed he has signed a 6 picture deal?? Chris Evans still has CA3 & Avengers 2 & 3 on the horizon.. Will the WS just become a super powered Bucky Barnes in his next 4 movies? Will he take over as CA after Chris Evans completes his 6 pictures? I know what happens in the comics with him becoming the new CAPTAIN AMERICA, But this is Hollywood, Would love to hear some follow up from you avid fans out there.

    • Seeing as how Marvel’s big 3 will bowing down sooner rather than later, (RDJr completed the Iron Man trilogy, Chris Evans&Hemsworth have one left)
But Stan’s Bucky gives Marvel a rare opportunity to keep the Cap franchise going! Bucky Barnes is my all time favorite Marvel character to be honest.

  11. Is it me or is the Helicarrier gets blown up the 2nd time ?
S.H.I.E.L.D must pay a big chunk of premiums for its insurance fee.

    • Only a small portion got blown up in The Avengers, so this makes only like one-and-a-half times.

And it’s not necessarily the same one anyway. The trailers and the Robert Redford poster make it clear that S.H.I.E.L.D. has more than one. Though the trailers also seem to indicate that we’ll only see one in action in the film, #42, which seems to launch, have some fighting take place on it, and not travel very far before it suffers damage, sideswipes the Triskelion and crashes into the river.

  12. looking at the Bucky poster in my head i’m saying “maybe it’s maybelline”

    • No. he’s definitely born with it.

    • Funniest comment of the day

  13. People complained when Black Widow was the only character to show her rear in the Avengers poster… Now you have it, a beautiful Winter Soldier and (almost) Falcon rear:)

  14. boom-chaka-vava winter soldier

  15. aint nobody gt tme fr tht

  16. Why Bucky wear guyliner? Me no gusta Emo Bucky.

I heart Sebastian Stan? Want to know why, glad you asked. He did this really dumb movie with Ashley Greene. She spends half the movie in her underwear. So thank you Sebastian, for helping to bring us this movie.
