It’s hard to believe that we’re just a mere few weeks away from the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the first Marvel superhero movie of 2014, opening at the end of March in Europe and the first weekend of April in North America. With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back on the air, Disney is doing everything they can to promote the Captain America sequel, which the ABC series will help setup in its stories about the mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. organization and how it may be crumbling.

Along with an extended TV spot that aired during the return episode of AoS, Marvel Studios is releasing more Captain America 2 character posters, one which introduced new character Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and a few more since. Today’s new Captain America: The Winter Soldier poster places the spotlight on the film’s titular antagonist.

The character-based one-sheet was shared via the official Captain America Twitter account but it’s not the only new promotional poster for the film – most of which feature the same color scheme, and a hero pose of a character with S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarriers in the background. Below is the full poster, taking any mystery away for moviegoers who weren’t sure of The Winter Soldier’s identity as Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) familiar friend Bucky Barnes from WWII who makes his way into the modern era as an enemy – who also happens to be super-powered as the Captain America 2 Super Bowl trailer made abundantly clear (watch our analysis video for more).

The pose is familiar to what we’ve seen of the character in promotional art and in the background of other posters and banners. Bucky, seemingly brainwashed, is taking orders for an unspecified enemy faction and is working towards disassembling S.H.I.E.L.D., and unlike Cap, he’s very fond of using high-powered weapons.

Below is the recently released Falcon poster, featuring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson character in mostly plain clothes but suited up in the powered wingsuit which features not only jet boosters on the back, but a pair of small machine guns that come out from the top when needed. The other posters feature new character Alexander Pearce (Robert Redford) in his old S.H.I.E.L.D. building, and Steve Rogers in a new pose without his helmet.

It’s hard not to love the design of the Secret Avengers-inspired uniform Chris Evans sports in most of the marketing material, blending together the more modern Avengers uniform – which not everyone loved – and the more practical, heavier design of his WWII outfit. The imagery emphasizes the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on Cap’s arm, making him an agent of the organization – at least when the film starts off and the character is still finding his place in the modern world. Clearly, much of the film’s plot is about that very identity crisis and not being sure of who’s trustworthy.
