WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood's season finale
Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips confirms Dexter Morgan's fate in the finale. After fans anxiously awaited to see what would become of Dexter after Angela become suspicious of him being the Bay Harbor Butcher and killing Matt Caldwell, the event series has wrapped its ten-episode series. With the introduction of Dexter's grown son Harrison and him being witness to his father's kills, Dexter's end will certainly have an impact on him, as well as the other characters in Dexter's town that he has associated himself with.
The finale titled "Sins of the Father" saw Dexter being arrested for the murder of Matt, a situation that he has been in multiple times in the original series and has successfully evaded. In Dexter's plan to escape, he kills Sergeant Logan before fleeing to Harrison and wanting to leave town on the run. Harrison is so horrified when he discovers what Dexter did that he turns on his father and is prepared to shoot him with a rifle that Dexter gifted him in the previous episode. Harrison makes Dexter realize what he has become, and Dexter tells his son to kill him.
In an interview with Deadline, Phillips confirms that Dexter Morgan is officially dead after being voluntarily shot by Harrison. Before getting shot, Dexter finally acknowledges what he has done and the numerous innocent people that have died because of him. He also admits a real love for his son that he has never felt prior. His last words to Harrison were, "You did good," before dying with his sister Debra by his side. Phillips' statement can be viewed below:
"I have three words for you: Dexter is dead...Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead."
The penultimate episode had Dexter passing down his code to Harrison, with Harrison being in awe of him, thinking that Dexter uses his Dark Passenger for the better. After seeing Dexter murder Kurt Caldwell, Harrison seems to have second thoughts after being fully exposed to Dexter's unsettling ritual. The finale also confirms that Angel Batista from the original series, now knows that Dexter is a serial killer, after being one of his ardent defenders. With the truth finally out about Dexter, it is at least comforting to fans to know that he died in peace.
Despite Dexter meeting his end in the finale, the fate of Harrison remains open. After Harrison killed Dexter, Angela stumbles upon him and Dexter's dead body. She decides to let him go, while she looks upon Dexter. Phillips has stated that he would like to explore more of Harrison's character and life after the finale. Time will tell whether there will be another continuation of the Dexter franchise, but while Dexter Morgan is officially dead, he could always return as Harrison's subconscious as Deb did for him.
