It's that time of year again, when ghosts and ghouls come out to play and cosplay is embraced by everyone. With grown-ups, kids, animals and even celebrities all getting in on the action, half the fun of Halloween is simply seeing all the creative and painstakingly crafted costumes that people come up with. Already we've spotted the Silver Surfer skateboarding through the streets of New York, and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Halloween also serves as a reflection of the past year and everything that has happened in it, with popular costumes from the past weekend including Stranger Things' Eleven and Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn. Lots of partygoers picked up a leather jacket and a barbed-wire bat to become The Walking Dead's new villain, Negan, and the return of the Star Wars franchise brought with it plenty of brand new characters to dress up as (not to mentioning reviving the popularity of classics like Han Solo and Darth Vader). Below, we've collected some of the best nerdy Halloween costumes that this year had to offer.

To kick things off, it wouldn't be Halloween 2016 without a tribute to one of the most talked-about new games of the year, Pokémon GO, and this costume gets three gold stars for effort.

Here's Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock as a dancing Pikachu. Don't forget to check out the Halloween prank that Johnson played on his Jumanji co-star Kevin Hart.

Pikachu is baby Jasmine's FAVORITE character. So, for Halloween me and @laurenhashianofficial decided the real life Pikachu was gonna come to the house for a visit. What Pikachu didn't know was that Jazzy would start crying when he stopped dancing and demanded he continue to shake his tail with a loud "EH!". So, Pikachu danced over.. and over.. and over.. and over... and over.. again. By the time I dropped my 197th JuJu, the heat of this costume was kickin' my ass. But, hey.. that's what daddy's do. #HappyHalloween #DaddyBlessedWithKnuckAndBuckStamina #NoLimitsWhenItComesToMakinEmHappy A video posted by therock (@therock) on
