Neil Marshall Working on World War 2 Alien Invasion Film

Director Neil Marshall (Centurion) has a handful of possible films coming up, including the unusual Burst 3D (which can be boiled down to the three word logline: “people spontaneously combust”). But what is the British genre-director working on now?

In a new interview, Marshall has said that he will be jumping into the alien invasion market – but not in the conventional route. According to the director himself, his project will see an alien invasion set during World War 2.

In an interview with Live for Films, Marshall dodged questions about his upcoming film for a moment, saying he was “chasing about 12 different projects.” Thanks to some diligent questioning though, Marshall admitted that the film he is currently working on writing is a WWII alien invasion story.

Alien invasion movies are in vogue this year (Screen Rant’s Mike Eisenberg even edited together a 2011 alien movie mash-up). Recently, fans flocked to theaters to see a modern military take on the alien invasion film with Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles. Later this year, Iron Man director Jon Favreau is back in action merging two genres (sci-fi and western) with his alien invasion film Cowboys & Aliens. Is there really room for another alien invasion movie?

Sure, why not? Since Marshall is only in the process of writing the script for this film, it will be a long time before it comes to fruition – which means that the current glut of invasion movies will be long forgotten. My bet is that, with the right script, a World War 2 invasion movie might go over pretty well with audiences. After all, they are two of the most time-tested genres in cinema history.

Neil Marshall is an interesting director. He’s made some excellent films, such as The Descent, but he hasn’t really broken into the mainstream. He was attached to Robert Rodriguez’s Predators for a time, but the film ended up going to Nimród Antal instead.

I wonder if any of the “12 different projects” Marshall is involved with will be the director’s first crack at a major big-budget picture. If not, we’ll just have to wait until he finishes the script for this WW2 alien invasion movie. I have a feeling his fans will be able to wait.

  1. Glad to see more “alien” films in other times that modern. How about one based on biblical tales of alien vistations.

  2. So basically he wants to do Harry Turtledove’s World War series. I have been wanting those books to be made into a film. WW2 and aliens is a good mix.

  3. And I’m sorry The Descent is a horrible movie, I don’t want him any where near a movie of Harry Turtledove’s stuff.

  4. Basicially, Resistance: Fall of Man.
