The descent was horrible...in my opinion that is. Only good thing about it was that the people that i wanted to die in the movie... Did. Doomsday was whatever... Didn't care for it much but as long as rodriguez is really strongly attached to the film than i think it could be good. Then again i haven't seen a movie with the predator character that i didn't like (yes including both avp's). I mean i could've and actually did write something better...
  • The Big Dentist
I think I'd blanked out the trauma, 790, but I can tell you the precise moment Doomsday "jumped the shark" in my eyes (or ears): when it used/abused my favourite Siouxsie & The Banshees track "Spellbound". I could feel the red haze descending at that point...
  • The Big Dentist
Did that! We were actually all with it up until the team went through the wall in the APVs - thought it might be on the same level as 28 Days Later, but we just ended up picking it to bits after that. Where did all the medieval gear come from? (And don't say the props department!) The Bentley ad/Mad Max business nearly drove us to cannibalism: not a scratch on it, not even a broken headlight. No matter what he chooses to slum it in, I must admit I've always got a soft spot for Malcolm McDowell though.

Ah come on "Doomsday" is the perfect film to hang out with friends (perhaps play a drinking game) and call out the scenes that are lifted from other films.
The dvd should come with a game manuel.

I remember watching it and laughing because it was real well produced but totally ripped off the overall plot of Escape from NY. With some Escape from LA, and Mad Max in there as well,
  • The Big Dentist
Shamose, definitely don't bother with Doomsday then!
  • Shamose
    Haha

Dated? didnt is just come out last year?
Well she isnt really "Banned" but we joke about it, since she aswell hated the movie
  • greenknight333
    @ Shamose

"I have banned my gf from picking movies for us to watch since she made me sit through that tripe… just one mans opinion though"

I guess it's an opinion...extremely dated one but still an opinion none-the-less
  • Shamose
Im hoping its not a reboot, but instead focuse's on the predator homeworld... mind you whatever it is it cant be worse than AVP2 *shudder*

and im sorry to question a screenrant writer, I generally have faith in everything you say and love your unbiased information/reviews, but the descent??? come on! that has seriously got to be the worst movie I have ever seen... I have banned my gf from picking movies for us to watch since she made me sit through that tripe... just one mans opinion though

    good day
  • The Big Dentist
Ah, I see! God, it does sound rough. I suppose there's murk, and there's murk...
  • 790
Big D, read Vic's review on AVP R.
  • The Big Dentist
How d'you mean, 790, just chase 'n' slash?
  • 790
AvP Requiem was an attempt to turn the franchise into a base horror film.
  • The Big Dentist
It was dead murky. Lotsa murk. What I loved about James Cameron's Aliens was that he filmed the "drones" from such odd angles and so rapidly that you could never quite work out what you were seeing. After AvP I just couldn't work myself up to see Requiem.
  • 790
The first AvP was an ok sci fi film but the sequel was just offensive on many levels. I've never seen the Descent but the working title "Predators" could mean a number of possibities. I can think of a few cool routes they could take.
  • The Big Dentist
Yeah, if he did it in the same style as The Descent I'd be all for it. I think the main thing that's ruined both the Predator and Aliens franchises is that we've just physically seen too much of them. There's no horror element to either of them now because we know exactly what we're going to get.
  • greenknight333
I will watch it this coming weekend..I have it on DVD so it will be something I look forward to..
  • 790
    Sounds good Big D.
    ^
I welcome a new take on the Predator franchise.
  • The Big Dentist
Ah well, 790, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one! Now then, about this Neil Marshall chap...!
  • The Big Dentist
Oh, and greenknight333, it IS worth seeing despite me ragging on the end!
  • 790
Wow, Big D, well what happens after that was the perfect ending IMO.
  • The Big Dentist
LOL - Yup, that would have done it for me, 790! Weirdo that I am!
  • 790
    Heed the spoiler warnings GK333.

    :-)
  • 790
GreenKnight333. LOOK AWAY AI SPOILERS !!!
    ^

    GET OUT AND RENT AI!!

    ^

Ok Big D, the ending you thought they should have left it at was when he ends up underwater starring at the Blue Fairy?
    Wtf???
  • greenknight333
Wow that was a pretty good exchange of ideas on a movie that did not spoil anything..good job 790, Big D and Ken..Thanks!!
  • The Big Dentist
No, totally the opposite! Did we see the same film?! I AM an old cynic then...
  • 790
So the ending was too downbeat Big D?
    I'm not understanding you.

The ending was pretty sad to me...
  • The Big Dentist
I just thought that "previous" ending I mentioned nailed it and would have been a much more poignant (and tear-jerking, if yer that way inclined) note to finish on...but then it just kept going. My one complaint about Spielberg is that he has this pathological need to send an audience out of the picture with their hearts singing like a choir of angels on MDMA. Personally I love a downbeat ending where one is appropriate, and I felt AI would have had more impact for me if the denouement had been a slightly tragic one. That had been the nature of Haley Joel Osment's performance for me.

Also, think what Kubrick would have done with it! I'm just glad Spielberg made up for it with Minority Report. But then again, that ENDING... He can't help himself! Maybe I'm just an old cynic, but I do appreciate my heartstrings being tugged where the wires aren't visible.
  • Ken J
Oops, I know this is obvious but I know someone will complain anyway if it's not said, but of course I meant it wasn't good IN MY OPINION.
  • 790
GK333, hurry up and watch AI. :-)
  • Ken J
Uh, I understood the ending, it just wasn't good...
